View Full Version : How bad of an idea would this be?

Buying a 2wd and converting? I found a 91 in good shape I think I could get for about $2000.

The core charge on a SUMO II is only $200. I think I would need a new driveshaft anyway. I want to run 33's. I would abviously need a front axle, but I'd assume these are cheap...or maybe a cruiser axle....:D

Anything I'm missing here? Any advice? Should I just be patient? Argh I got the bug but no Sammi!

thats alot of cake for a 91, I would hold out for something just as nice but cheaper and 4x

If the truck was really good condition and low miles I'd consider it.

Depends on what you ahve in mind - if youare going to go Sumo, custom front prop shaft, etc., etc. then go this route. Sam axles are cheap at the wrecker.

Yeah the 90+ seem to be fetching a serious premium since there are so few of them and the EFI is there.

I haven't settled on exactly what I want to do yet, but I want to TRY not to do it half-ass the first time and re-do it later. Probably Wranger SPOA or coils. Undecided on stock vs Toy axles....I'd probably rather not screw with the different axles right away. Definitely Tcase...GRS2 or SUMO.

Axles are the first thing I would do...

So if I assume I am going to do axles upfront...

I dont need the front 4wd stock axle anyway. I eat $200-300 core charge on the xfer case. I guess I will need the shifter and may have to cut a hole for it. Any other hurdles you can think of?

I'm starting with a 91 2wd, found it a better price than the older 4x4 Zuk's.

The only difference between the 2wd and 4wd versions is the fact the 2wd has a xfer case that's missing the front output flange, the driveshaft, and the pumpkin. It's identical in every other way shape and form..

really??

So it's just a T-case with a single, unselectable gear?
Is the T-case housing the same and they plug the hole?

I've got a light Blue '90 EFI here in Tulsa that's a real 4x4 and I'll let it go for about half of that!......

It needs motor work, but I can load you up with as many 1.3's as you can carry....... (I've got a '95 motor complete, no knock, needs valve job and rings....)

I believe the tcase was used to offset the drive line and add 1.4 to the gearing ...........:D also the front axel has one less leaf in the pack(lighter axel )........:D
