OK...

I just baught an Atlas II... my NP231 cracked and wont hold oil.

Question.. out of neccesity in what was available Im ending up with an Atlas with stock output shafts.... my question is..

Stock Atlass output shaft... is it as strong as a heavy duty output shaft in a NP 231? (JB Conversion Heavy duty short shaft is what is in my cracked NP 231)

anyone got specs on shaft diameteres.... etc. to compare?

ahhhhh ... I mean diameters of the shafts in the T-case... not one in ur shorts.. geeeeeeee.. So stop measuring in ur pants newbies.... I dont careeee about how tiny those shafts are...

MY BAD.... I was just educated that it is only the front output that they upgrade on Atlas cases.... ..

OK... I may be making this a dedicated off road rig.. and I am a technical driver not a gas and go guy... should I do the upgrad in the near future? the atlas will run w/ 3.8 reduction... 35-37" tires and 4:56 gears..

all the rear shafts are the same on atlas t-cases. the front is the one you can upgrade to the 32 spline shaft. i personally don't see why you would spend that much $$$ for an atlas and not go ahead and get the 32 spline front output. just my op.

Simple... Im a daily driver... 30 dollars a day times 15 days to rent a car waiting on an atlas with the uprgraded front.... or get one available NOW and be back on the road by monday?

Thank you for clarifying that it was the front one that is up graded to 32...

I run only 35" meats.. if I ever go up it will be notihing over 37's Im sure and probably only 36's

Its in how you drive, if you drive like you say you do, then its fine...plus you need to get that thing on the road and get you ass to work.

Good morning coachgeo,

Here are a few small tips for you on your new Atlas that all deal with oil.

1.
The main shifter base bolts to the Atlas II with three bolts. The instructions tell you to coat these bolts with Blue RTV.

They mean this!!!!! You will get oil leaks if you don't.

2.
The sight glass tube fittings must have Teflon tape put on the threads or you will get leaks.

3.
Make sure you replace the breather tube with new 3/8 inch fuel line. The old breather hose is too small and will cause oil to be thrown from it.

4.
You may want to cut a small hole in your skid plate directly under the Atlas II drain plug (which is on the bottom plate.)

This will allow you to drain the oil without having to take the skid plate down. (Convenience item)

Good luck to you.

Frank

I have to agree with Daless here, they mean it when they say seal it up...my junk leaks all over, problem is I am too lazy to pull it out so I just keep it full for now. It doesnt really drive anyway

Teflon tape or a good thread sealer should only be used on the NPT threads of the Sight Tube, the AN fittings are self sealing and should not get anything(except maybe a very light coating of thread sealer). By adding tape to an AN fitting you limit the ability to thread all the way down and propperly contact the flared surface with the inner flange.

They fly a PIRATE FLAG... Apparently they are not familure with this board either.. but they fly one out of choice.. so.... every one welcome them... as long lost bretheren I guess.

Otherwise.... in RE to the tips u posted here.....

...................Thanks Guys...............

Keep it comming... Ive sent this page to the shop in the boonies doing my work. (Mosquito 4wd) They look to be a very knowledgable hardcore crew.... Im new to the area and was excitied to see this.

Tid bits like those they will read here are probably just reminders about the little shit that almost gets forgetton when u dont install a couple of Atlas cases a week so Im sure they will be thankfull to ya.

Hey H8monday - Jeff,

I'll buy that, I stand corrected.

Thanks for pointing this out. Accuracy does matter!

Here is the exact phrasing of what I should have said the first time.

"The threads on the anodized site tube fittings MUST HAVE Teflon tape placed on them before installing them into the case."

As Mr.H8 has pointed out, these are the NPT threads on the Atlas-to-anodized fitting, and not the AN fittings which are indeed self sealing.

Once again Jeff, thanks for pointing this out. My original post was unclear.
