87-89 cherokee have the D44
It was included in the metric ton towing package,
also in comanche pick-ups

The grand 44's use aluminum diff, not strong enough for to swap into your heep.

everytime I go to the yards I look under every XJ i see and have never seen a 44, good luck finding one. Just get a 8.8 off a ranger or explorer, much easier to find and once you ditch the carrier its pretty stout.

Dude, get a D44 out of a XJ or MJ. I always heard they were rare, but at www.auto-part.com, I found almost 10 of em, just in NC.

I wanted to do the Ford 8.8" swap, but down here, they start at $650 in the boneyards & I found my 44 out of a 87 XJ for $350.

a friend of mine found a 8.8 realy close to here for only $400, i am trying to stay clear of the 3rd member, everyone runs 44's for a reason and that reason is that they are good axls, so i will continue my hunt for the missing 44

Just run over to your u-pull it yard and grab one... my local yard still has a couple of dana 60 rear full floaters 8 lug for only $70... although I'm sticking with my 44 rear right now. But, u-pull it yards are the way to go if you ask me....

I got a d44 out of an 86 cherokee and it had the same 5 on4.5 lug pattern as a YJ. still had to regear it though, thats where the $$$ came in...

look for scout-specific parts places.. or a scout at the junkyard, the 44s in those are strong they will have the same gears (but usually too high) and are 58" from mounting surface to mounting surface

how about a 2wd toyota rear? very common in yards. 5 on 4.5 bolt pattern, 30 spline and used gears/lockers out the ass. just my .02;)
