I have two 14 bolt ff rear ends. One is out of a 79 1 ton the other is from a 78 3/4 ton I would like to use the 3/4 ton one because I have the front end from the same truck. But I am going to probably weld the rear solid it is going in a off road jeep. But how can I tell if one of them has a posi in it or not. If it has a posi can that carreir still be welded solid. Thanks

These never came posi. If it open you can weld it(most of these were open). Otherwise it has gov lock Locker in it.which you can sell or swap for an open, or I am sure you could just weld that if you really want to. Or just rn it.

Actually they did come with a posi in the older ones. Buddy had a 77 3/4 with the plow package, had an Eaton in it, and it wasn't swapped.

some gm 14 bolts did have lockers in them... mine does, it came in a military cucv m1008 1 1/4 ton, all military gm 14 bolts came with a detroit locker in them from the factory.

I have taken the cover off it is not like every 10 bolt and 12 bolt that I have always messed with. The carreir looks way different can you actually tell just from removing the cover if it is open or has posi or a locker in it. Is their some pictures that I can compare it to to tell for sure.

Open carriers have 4 cross shafts and gov-lovks have 3.

Thats a gov-lock

Yep 3 crosses is the govelock...I would just weld it up.

so does it really madder then can I weld either one of them up. gov lock or open
which one would be stronger to weld up.

The open one would probubly be stronger because of the extra pin...but it is usualy the little junk like the governer that brakes on the gov-lock so I would have no fear of welding it.
