: Spray painting a dirtbike.......
convertiyota 04-19-2002, 06:46 AM I've got maybe the ugliest dirtbike you've ever seen. White plastics, white frame, red subframe, orange gas tank, gold excel rims, and a phuckin' yellow, red and black seat cover.:barf: :barf: It's a '91 cr250 that I got for $400 so if it doesn't make it go faster or run better I'm not spending money on it:D :D
I'd like to paint it.......anybody ever spray paint these plastics?? Does it stick halfway decent?? I was thinking about painting it camo:D :D
convertiyota 04-19-2002, 06:48 AM Oh yeah, I was also thinking I could pull the old seat cover off and either cut up some camo pants or get some camo fabric from Walmart or something to staple on for a cover. wadayathink??
Kyron 04-19-2002, 09:53 AM Use plastic spray paint for the plactic....... it sticks a little better. Forget trying to paint the tank, it will look like poop.
I'd leave the seat cover alone, unless the camo fabic is really tough....... theres almost nothing annoying as a messed up seat cover. But duct tape is always an thought :D
If you spray your rims with Easy-off oven cleaner, it will etch the anodizing so spray paint will stick better........
Kyron 04-19-2002, 09:53 AM Oh... one more thing.......PICTURES!!!!
pitter 04-21-2002, 06:17 PM yeah don't paint the gas tank cause i think the gas will eat away all the paint when spilled
BrknBronco 04-22-2002, 08:58 AM Hey paint the gas tank, but just like the rest of the plastics scuff them. Scuff all of your plastics with 400grit and then go to 1000 or so. The paint should stick very well but just remember to spray in a place that is heated so the paint will bake on not just dry. The seat cover idea, go to the local boat store and see what they have for camo seat material, and its usually water proof.

Awesome.......that's what I was thinking..to sand all of it. Glad to hear it from someone else. Thanks
Good idea about the boat store, too.
BrknBronco 04-22-2002, 10:48 PM So when do we get to see pics of the bike? sorry Im inpatient.
rabid 04-29-2002, 06:54 AM SEM makes a plastic scuffing grit that comes in a tube-looks like soft scrub. I used it to rough up the plastics on my Hodaka when I painted it. Cheap, worked great, but I was using an acrylic enamel. I would think that spray paint would work fine if you prepped in enough. I skipped the sandpaper and used one of those green rags (forget what they are called, they are with all of the paint supplies at your parts store) Was really fast, and the paint stuck great.
Here is a pic before the bike was done with a new seatcover, and rear directionals. That front fender is plastic.
CoryB 04-29-2002, 07:12 AM You can also buy a seat cover-cover from most of the motorcycle/ATV suppliers out there. Dunno the price, but it would at least cover the seat and fit properly.
BrknBronco 05-01-2002, 09:38 AM Yeah but most manufacturers dont make Camo covers for Motocross bikes, Ive looked. Convertiyota what color did you end up painting it? Or did you go Camo on the whole thing?? Just wondern
schuss 05-03-2002, 08:55 AM for plastics find yourself some "vinyl dye". It's great stuff, doesn't have run marks or anything, just redyes the plastic. I believe you have to scuff it up a little bit first though.
Rockin' 05-03-2002, 09:05 AM I thought that if you painted a plastic gas tank the paint would bubble. The plastic tanks actually breathe a bit.
BrknBronco 05-03-2002, 01:08 PM Ive painted mine a couple of times and I havent had any problems with it bubbling at all. Alot of it depends on what Fuel you run cause some fuels have very strong dyes in them like Klotz racing gas turs plastic tanks colors and so does some AV.Gas but I dont this hes runnin that stuff. Just make sure you put on nice even coats and if it does bubble just rescuf it amd shoot it again, what are you out about a half hour of time? and a little bomb can? its wort it to me.
