Any suggestions for upgrade on a power steering unit when going for a Mile Marker winch?

Thanks, John

You may want to do a search in general 4x4. The topic has been well covered in the general 4x4 forum. If I remember the consensus of a few MM owners was the only way to get any kind of descent performance is to have a dedicated pump engine driven or PTO driven. This pump has the following specs:

Hydraulic Clutch Pump
Each pump operates off truck or equipment engines. Mounted in line with engine belt 2 groove pulley. 7in. pulley diameter. Takes two type A 1/2in. belts. Clockwise rotation. Foot mounts with two 1/2in. tapped holes. Maximum pressure 3000. 1 1/4in. NPTF inlet, 1in. NPTF outlet.

GPM @ RPM:
4.6 @ 1200
7.6 @ 2000
11.4 @ 3000

there was a company in the UK selling modified ZF pumps that bolt right in just for this purpose. if i remember correctly they were cheaper than stockers yet were twice as strong. you might just want to get the part numbers and rig something along the same lines.

just a thought,

I've one of the zf pumps with the MM, on a TDI engined Defender. It's not all that much quicker, mayby twice as quick if I was generous. Loads quicker in high gear.

Have a look here for some details. also find a link to the supplier:

woops, premature posting there!

I wanted to add that I'm thinking of replacing the ZF pump with something that is a bit quicker. There'se loads of power in the ZF, but it's not quick enough. Basically it has the PSI but not the GPM to turn the winch fast enough.

I got an adaptor from GBR to run a pump from the tranny, selectable on or off so I dont run the pump in reverse. Could be a while getting it on through.

Merv.

That pump above looks similar to the one in Northern Tools catalogue.

Anyway, Merv, is do you have a modified or a stock ZF pump currently? If you do have the modified ZF pump, would it work in a normal PS system w/o a MM winch? I'm asking 'cause I need a pump asap and if you're planning on getting rid of it.....!

I think the ZF pump would produce too much psi for the standard steering box and end up blowing seals. (Ever tell you about the penguin that... <another time>).

I recently had my PS pump seize solid (It had a dent where something hit it from underneath) and had to replace it. Worked out about $250 or so.

And I'm afraid I'm not ready to change pumps yet. I've to locate a high gpm pump (up to 15 gpm) with about 2500 psi. (No less than 1500 psi). I may have one for sale then, but that could be a few months off.

I like the pump that was posted earlier in the thread. If you had that, and get a hydrolic guy to rig a bypass valve, you could run a lower pressure circuit to the steering box, and leave te higher pressure for the winch. I dont like that personally because if the bypass fails, so does your ps box.
