YellowIH 07-03-2006, 03:33 PM Anyone know of a replacement for a SII radiator? Mine needs replacing due to a huge hole in it....otherwise I keep killing the critters. :flipoff2:
Stock replacments are $$$.
Thanks,
I assume you know BCB (http://www.backcountrybinders.com/motor.htm) sells replacement radiators as does Anything Scout. 3 core model $325
Several people have put in Summit aluminum radiators too, but the hose sizes need to be altered, or weld on a bigger inlet and outlet. The stock rad is an "extra tall" radiator hence the $$$.

Mechanos 07-03-2006, 05:00 PM As long as the tanks are ok.... I just take them down to the local radiator shop and have them recored. Last one I did was something like $200 or so.
misterfubar 07-03-2006, 07:39 PM I just recently bought a three core from Back Country Binders, It was $3??, great product but if your tanks are in good shape I'd have it recored.
Snoopy 07-03-2006, 09:56 PM I got the summit 2-row aluminum and paid a pro tig welder to fix it to what I needed. Only cost $90 for him to do everything. That's what I'd do.

Do you know where did he got the aluminum tube?
Never mind, they welded the bump at the end of the tube :)

corncrasher 07-04-2006, 01:07 PM I wouldn't recomend the aluminum summit rad. I have it and in hot weather the cooling is marginal. If it gets real hot out or you push it hard it will overheat. I think the rad needs to be a little bigger.

misterfubar 07-04-2006, 05:21 PM Buy it, you won't be dissapointed.
YellowIH 07-05-2006, 08:51 AM I have one new 3 core High efficiency radiator left in stock:grinpimp:
You have a PM.

I shoulda bought that one from you in CdA. I'm still not sold on the Summit radiator even with the t'stat, but haven't tried a 10 mile drive yet.. I suspect it'll be better, but not great.
Not sure if blocking the bypass will do me any good or not.
Just hate to cry "uncle" on this project.. it was going to be so much cheaper to replace my radiator when I destroyed it again. ;)
RustoleumWhite 07-05-2006, 03:54 PM Which rad did you go with again tom?? What are the dimensions? (length and width).

I have seen electric fans that don't moving enough air. Not sure if driving 65 affects the fans performance or is was just too small to begin with.
You could install a "hard fan" no clutch, the old fashion chop your fingers off type:D with a protective shroud that would help draw more air. But tsm1mt is having trouble too, but not sure if he ever installed a t-stat to block off the bypass yet.

I have tried all those things and the summit rad just doesn't work as good as the stock rad. I'm sure if it had just a little more capacity it would be fine.
On a side note the robert shaw style thermastat helps block off the bypass but actually blocking off the bypass and chucking the thermastat completly workes way better. I tested my scout and with the correct style of thermastat and there was still quite a bit of flow through the bypass.
I'm planning on changing out my rad latter this summer or next, as soon as I come up with a good replacement.

Don't remember off hand, but it's the smaller Ford 2-row aluminum rad just like Summit sells for $169.
I had to bash in one of the tanks at the bottom to get it to be narrow enough to fit between the frame rails.
I could've gone with the wider version and put it all above the rails, but IIRC moving the lower hose fitting on the radiator up (by putting the rad above the rails) puts the lower hose in line with the p/s belt.
As it sits with the radiator inside the rails, the upper hose is so short I had to go to an AC alt mount to move the alternator DOWN to get the upper hose away from the alt belt.
I *think* it's better with the 180 RS 'stat, but I might have to pull the bypass hose off again and just cap off the waterpump housing, or thread and plug the bypass spot in the water neck itself and see what "full flow" through the rad does for me.
It *can't* hover around 230 while I'm just cruising around.. that's an alright number, but it won't stay that cool when I'm flogging it.
