View Full Version : Weekend Update (4th of July holiday weekend)

4th of July weekend is here and almost over, what did ya'll do.
Even tho I can't upload all my pics yet, I got plenty done on Rusty. Brakes are in, bled, and so forth. Rear compartment was skin'd with 1/8" sheet metal. Front clip is narrowed 17" and re-installed on rusty's front tube work. Trimmed, and cut front sheetmetal a bunch, painted like a devil between rain storms :shaking: Needless to say I'm not 100% happy about the way the paint came out but its done enough for me ~ at the moment.
Loaded Rusty on a trailer and took it to the old shop to test flex it to see where/what hits. When lifting the rear tires I started rubbing the front tires on the already hog'd out fenders at about 44" off the ground. Marked the fenders another 2-3" up and I'll cut that off tomorrow morning before I leave.
Front flex really impressed me. 53-56" off the ground without any rubbing on anything. The front shock wasn't comletely bottomed out yet so I could have gone higher but need to tweak the suspension a bit to do it. In all honesty, 4 3/4 FEET of flex is pretty decent ~ all things considered.
The only problem was that we were in the middle of another rain storm when I was testing things out so I wasn't able to see what would happen when I turned the wheel lock-to-lock at full flex. I don't think it'll hit the trim job now, but will have even more clearance when I trim that little bit more to allow the rear to flex like it wants too.
Needless to say, I'm very VERY excited to have Rusty up and running (for the most part). Just a few tweaks and I'll be set to go!

Also to Jeff at Click here IHONLY North (http://www.ihonlynorth.com/) for staying open late and having the parts I needed and taking the time to show me a few tips. :smokin:
The last shot is below the dam near the rubicon trail ( Just drove up for the day to get away)

Saturday morning got up bright and early at 5:15, left at 6 am and drove 250 miles up to see a friend (Molly) home from the Peace Corp for her brother's wedding. Hung out with her family, got to talk to a whole buch of people who I hadn't seen in years, got one job offer and only ended up falling asleep on her bedroom floor at about 12:45 am on Sunday morning. Only to get up at 6:45 and help get some of the family off to the airport. Watched the Formula 1 race while Molly ran some of her family to the airport, out to lunch and later decided Molly was too busy to have any fun, seeing people while she was back and all, so 6pm Sunday night I decided to head home. Made it back just before 11pm. It was a good choice too, I have way too much todo this week!
You know people bitch and moan about diesel Scout's but all I can say is F'em! My Scout has 282K on the truck and 155K on the engine. I ran it 500+ miles with weekend up 2-3 5% grade all 2-4 miles long, averaged 53 miles an hour and all the while it was 90-100 degrees outside. The truck got 20+mpg, never over heated, never lost oil pressure and never complained. That's pretty damn good in my book for a Traveler full of tools and fuel, tipping the scale at just over 5K.
Monday: Got fitted for a Tux for my best bud's wedding, hair cut and then to my parent's house to start cleaning my Scout for The Binder Bee. Helped Dad track down parts for his Travelall with a 401 in it. Seems the timing chain had over an inch of slack in it. The parts guy was a little too ambitious and assumed my Dad didn't know what he was talking about when he ordered gaskets. When we went to pick them up today they were for a International 401 (VS motor) not the AMC 401. Worse part was the gaskets he needed were on the shelf and he could have walked out of the store on Saturday with them.
Tomorrow more cleaning, relax and celebrate the birth of our nation by blowing up my little piece of it!!

Fri - Sat - Sun am, camped with buddies out at Tuttle Creek. Met a guy who had a nice, in cherry condition, 71 1210 2wd T-ette. He bought it brand new then, and it only has 57,000 miles on it. It's been kept in the garage all these years. Damn that was the nicest binder I have ever come across. Drank more beer than the normal operating liver will allow to be consumed, but had a pretty kick ass time.
Sun pm, watched a really good softball game, then went to my favorite bar in Manhattan, Ks. Drank a few more before calling it a night.
Came home yesterday, and spent the rest of the day being the slug I can be.
Today was pretty much the same as yesterday.

Well this weekend I finally got done with my floor boards. I also got most of my roll bar done, but I still have the braces to fab up. But at least I now have the seat belts in the back for the kids, so this project is now officially my daily driver. It has only taken since May of 05' to get here, and to be honest, it still looks like shit. But it gets better looking every day. Now its time for the body work. Then today had a good time with the kids today at a family cookout and will take them out to see the fireworks tonight.

I guess I have officially gone insane, :rasta: I bought a 1965 Scout 80 this weekend :D
Last week I ran across a bone stock 1965 Scout 80. It followed me home this weekend. The wife was surprised when she came home and it was sitting in the driveway.:cool2: No big plans for now, the body is in great shape, but the drivetrain may need a lot of work. Right now I just plan on fixing the floor and get the mechanical stuff working good enough to drive. Anybody have some Scout D44's they don't need anymore? :D

Thursday night I got stuck in SLC on my way back from Toronto, Canada...
Friday morning I flew from SLC to Pasco, WA as it was the only place to fly into that was not oversold by 12 seats:shaking:. I ended up driving back to Seattle from Pasco with a 29 year old very attractive CPA...lots in common...3-1/2 hour car drive with her...ha ha ha. Ohhhh and she is not content with current boyfriend...:) more later if more comes from it.
Friday night I played some music and drank beer with my ex father in law. He is one of those guys that I will be friends with forever.
Saturday my sons and I went to a pool party at a good friends house in Yakima....

Monday the boys and I just hung out at the park playing baseball. Had some talks with my oldest about attitude and how to control it...:) Then took them to meet up with their mother for the "drop-off". She is staying up at her boyfriends place this weekend. I must admit that she looked fucking incredible...Too bad that I know how crazy of a woman she is...
Today I have done nothing....other than organize my apartment since I have been just barely in it with work trips and house-sitting etc. It feels nice to do nothing. I also baked some loaf cakes from a recipe that I have been working on....Raspberry Lemon. Ohhh and rubbed some tanning oil on and sat outside on my balcony and cooked my skin like bacon.

I feel your pain, man. I had a temp job working 10:30 to 7 am Thursday through Monday. I got a bonus for not being late, but that schedule still sucked donkey balls.
I cut the front bumper off and welded on the new longer one, then put the short one that was on the front on the back.
Last friday I had a little fender bender in the semi in New York. and just about had another one in Chicago. Fuckin morons can't read a damn construction sign. Plus I had two dumbasses call and complain that I wouldn't let them cut me off. Don't play chicken with an 80,000 pound truck, dip shit.
Last week when I was in Wisconsin My mom called and told me that my dad went to the hospital. He was having stroke like syptoms and when they checked him out they found a brain tumor. They did surgery and got 60% of it out, the rest of it is in the speech area and if they go after it he might not be able to talk again. The doctor said it was a fast growing tumor and he probably only has just a year left. Now all his Alcoholics Annonymous "buddies" (he calls them drunk buddies) are circling around like vultures eyeing some woulded roadkill on the pavement. They all tell him what to do and help him go through his stuff and throgh out the crap. I'm about to tell them to fuck off, this is family business.
Oh well, enough about that. I wanted to go do something last weekend but my car registrations all expired and the license brach was closed. Plus, the do it yourself 24-7 kiosks were all fuckin shut down for a stupid upgrade! Pretty damn brilliant if you ask me, right on a holiday weekend.
I go on and bitch some more, but you probably don't want to hear it.

Saturday I got 2 more loads of bark and finished barking the yard that I started Wednesday. Also did some general clean-up and picked up the house.
Sunday I burned the crap out of some processed animal flesh for some buddies as HOS posted above... no one died yet so I guess all was OK :flipoff2:
Then I did it all again when all the local family (2 set of parents, 1 great-grandma, and 2 sets of siblings and their offspring) came over.
Monday I worked... it sucked. Then came home and helped take care of the little girl after she had a crabby day with mom.
Tuesday we went to the annual 4th of July parade in Bothell, then the traditional BBQ at my mothers oldest friends place (only been going to it for the last 30 years). Good time, good food, good people. Celebrity Contact!!: Meet Cisco and Megan (of gardening with Cisco, for those Washington area guys that know what that is). Nice people, also meet Megan's 18 mo. old... she's fun.
Now I sit here chilling with a little TV and computer time, listening to the neighborhood blow up :grinpimp:
no IH truck work, other than selling a set of old tires to Ben W and showing off all my junk to HOS and Hooper :D
UW, :( about your father, strokes and tumors are BAD... BTDT. Help him out however you can, tell his "friends" to go to hell if you need to. From the sounds of it, loss of spech is better than only a year to live... tough decision. for you.

We had a BBQ (venison steaks) and fireworks on Monday night due to scheduling issues which means I was going to hit the sack early tonight.. ;)
Only started three grass fires.. had one mortar tip over but got it righted before I sent a flaming ball into the crowd or beyond and into the shop towards the solvent tank..
Took Michelle's 800 for a drive tonight after puttering all weekend to put it back together.
The Edelbrock whines, the clutch needs a little more adjustment, and the t'stat housing leaks.. I have more gaskets on order so it'll have to wait for now, but the "new" 304 seems to run at least as well as the old one (whew).
Cleaned the shop. Added shelves to my storage shed, and unloaded a new swingset inside (gonna be a while before the kid needs *that* )
Moved my waterbed.. ugh.. cleaned the rest of the darn house.
Noticed a buddy had been by and dropped this off for me..

:bounce: Thanks, Rob! :bounce:
Even cheaper than my $75 Dana 60.. this one was free.. but will likely still end up in the $1500 neighborhood just like the first one did.
At this point, I have a housing and knuckles (I had some extras).
I have some Ford 5-stud caliper stands I might see if I can redrill when I assemble my other 60, so maybe I won't need caliper stands.
But that leaves me short: gears, locker/carrier, inner shafts, spindles, wheel hubs, tie-rod, bearings, rotors, calipers, etc.
I do have 4 extra 30sp stubs, but for this application, and since I have NO stock parts to start with, it'd be dumb to not go 35sp.
Didn't get nearly as much done as I wanted to, of course.
I took these pictures a while back, but finally got 'em off the camera.
Stock '74 100 4x4 with a 36x12.50-15 TSL on 15x8.5.
I just wanted to test fit to see what the issues would be..

I even went so far as to chain the frame to the bottom of the jack and check clearance at full stuff.
The flange in front of the fuel switch will have to go.
The 36s will fit no problem, and the tape measure suggests 42s would fit "ok" with regard to the firewall in particular. Anything bigger would hit too much.
On a 74/75, you could move the axle forward easily enough to make the 44s fit, but I was doing the research with an eye towards my '72 1110 Travelall, with a front sump, and the level of effort involved in moving the axle forward isn't worth the trouble yet.
..but cutting for 42s could be worth the trouble if another 60 comes my way.
