I have a 1977 Ford Bronco, that I am installing a York compressor on for OBA. Can I mount it on its side or does it have to be upright? I've heard that it will drain the oil, but am not sure. Any info would help. I also have a Saden compressor (rotary) that was on it. I'm not sure if that can be converted for use. Let me know. Thanks.

yes, they can be mounted on their side - it may spit some oil though. If it is a motorcraft compressor, most were used on their side anyways. If you mount it on the drivers side, it will spit less oil as the outlet will be on top, if mounted on the passenger side, it will spit a lot more oil.
The sandeen compressors will work too, the older ones don't put out as much cfm as the yorks, but I have been told that the new ones are fairly close.
i have mine mounted on its side no problems and its been two years. it is starting to make some noise and i am wondering what type and how much oil it takes. is there a york info page out there somewhere?

My experience is that Yorks spit out the same amount of oil no matter what their orientiation. The major reason for this is that they have a passage from the crank case to the suction port that is designed to circulate oil to the seal. When you use them as an iar pump, just plug this line and they blow much less oil. It doesn't matter what side they are on when you are using them as an air compressor, although York recommends having the suction up when used in A/C applications. Sanden compressors are also good air pumps.
You can download the factory York shop manual and read about the oil line plug here:
