: Filter sticking out of hood. Cool or gay?
LOPPY 04-19-2002, 10:28 AM I need some opinions here:
First of all: Black YJ, 38's and tree fiddy. I was getting sawzall happy the other day and got to thinking... my damn air filter get's squished (slightly) by the hood. Hmmm. Should I cut a round hole out and put it on a very small riser so it just pokes out the hood a bit? :D That sounds like fun I'm think'n. Engine bay a tad cooler... hmmm.
Then I got to thinking it might look like I was a wanna be mud dragger or monster truck.
I'm leaning slightly more towards doing it. Well? :D or :rainbow: ?
Weezer 04-19-2002, 10:30 AM :rainbow:
Welby 04-19-2002, 10:31 AM :rainbow:....Or cut it out, and put a small scoop over it... :D
Whitewater 04-19-2002, 10:31 AM The filter will obviously be more exposed to the elements, dust/rain/mud/rivers/rocks and debris during rollovers etc... This is the main reason I wouldn't do it.

yeah, this concerned me as well. Not worth it.
The more I think about it... the more :rainbow: it sounds.
Aggro 04-19-2002, 10:44 AM just get rid of the air cleaner. I don't have one!
randii 04-19-2002, 10:54 AM So I'm curious -- how does your air filter impact what sort of hairy hole you prefer?
Rock Toy 04-19-2002, 11:32 AM Here you go. Same basic Jeep, except blue.
With hole in hood:

With Hood Scoop installed:

Whitewater 04-19-2002, 11:35 AM That scoop actually looks nice!

That's EXACTLY what I was talkin' about..... Nice n' subtle :D
tsm1mt 04-19-2002, 11:41 AM Nothing wrong with it. Heck, I just have the hole.. no scoop or cover. :D
Just haven't gotten 'round to a scoop and I keep changing things anyhow..
Just scoop it.
Cut the hole, scoop it, and let the hot air out of the engine bay through your scoop. Does wonders for lowering on-trail engine temps.
If you don't put a scoop or cover of some sort on it you'll need to cover the top of the filter when it rains (and you're not driving it) to keep water from seeping down through the wing-nut stud and down into the carb and ultimately into the oil.
pcorssmit 04-19-2002, 11:42 AM In order to really pull this off, you need a '76 Camaro, and a mullet, complete with molester-mustace. Don't forget the glass packs. :D
The scoup on that Jeep might look good if they were to turn it around so its facing the right way.

No doubt about it :rainbow:
I mean REALLY :rainbow:
:flipoff2: :flipoff2: :flipoff2:
Eric Ruhl 04-19-2002, 12:13 PM Without a scoop = :rainbow: :rainbow: :rainbow:
With scope is cool, but I'd face it the other way (opening towards windshield) to aid cooling and better protect the element.
Rock Toy 04-19-2002, 12:17 PM The way the hood in contoured (sp?), it wouldn't work to mount that particular scoop the other way.
Eric Ruhl 04-19-2002, 12:23 PM I didn't say anything about using that particular scoop :flipoff2:
Edit: Actually, maybe it's the pic but it looks like that scoop would look just fine flipped around. Have to notch the "front" but the angled sides look like they'd follow the hood contour pretty well? Again, tough to tell from the pic.
through the hood is :rainbow: IMO.
I can say that because I had one on the XJ. When I built the MJ I was got a cheap ass scoop from JC Whitless and screwed it on, supa cheap and much better looking.

scoops are cool. big ass air cleaners sticking thru the hood are even cooler. in a red neck kinda way.

what is all this scoop and redneck talk?
are we talking strawberry icecream here??:flipoff2: :rasta: :rasta: :rasta:
This one's not bad:

BTW, what did you do to make the air cleaner so close to the hood? The Jeep in my pic has a tall-deck Chevy RAT with a tall, single-plane manifold. And it only needed this small scoop.
TEX
elf_cruiser 04-19-2002, 05:52 PM definitely :rainbow:
Big Rich 04-19-2002, 07:09 PM Cut the hole, install a longer piece of all thread, stack a couple of 4" tall air filters, and then pop-rivot a tin shield in front of the filter.:D :D
Thumper046 04-19-2002, 07:10 PM cut it out, and put a small scoop over it...
Redneck???? I dont think so. Rednecks would just take the freaking hood off:flipoff2: :flipoff2: :flipoff2: IMO... Not bad look if you have the openinig towards the windshield....NOt to mention the benifits you get from unrestricted air flow.......
there my 2 pennies worth......(no I dont want the change :flipoff2: )

:D
ROKTOY 04-19-2002, 10:24 PM Be sure to run the straight headers up and out the hood while you're at it.
Jay
Dustin 04-20-2002, 12:43 AM My only concern with mounting the scoop the other way would be if you ever run the windsheild down or off, it will blow the hot air straight back at you. I say get a lower profile air cleaner and leave the hood intact. Could you just cut the fin off of the underside of the hood?
to really look cool, you just can't beat one of these

yes
Sillyneck 04-20-2002, 02:35 AM if you can wheelie in the mud w/ out the help of a dirt bump you're cool :D (my jeep is prime example ;))
Loppy...as sergei who painted his scoop the frist time ;)
Dingo 04-20-2002, 04:00 AM I say you get the longest K&N money can buy and a tube like the Civics use and stick it up higher than your roof. :D
I actully am having a similar problem and was thinking of doing the cheapo JC Whitney hood peice like DUG said. Definately will give it a cleaner look anyhow.

Mr. Bastard 04-22-2002, 05:55 AM :rainbow: in a big way.
Brian E 04-22-2002, 09:03 AM Every heard of a little rig named Pinky??? It was built by some guy named Shannon Cambell. Find a pic of it and take a look at the filter sticking through the hood!!!! I think it looks good when done right.
