Would it be possible to replace the air pump in my 88 trooper with another A/C compressor to use for on board air? Has anyone done an on board air system on their trooper?

Uhh that was an informative post?

You will probobly want to use a York Compressor. They have there own oil sump that is seperate, basicly dosnt require freon to lube the system. Also they are freakin powerful coimpressors. For the most part you can run air tools off of them. The only drawback is they are pretty big and hefty.

I did find someone who mounted one in an '86 Trooper. He had it mounted Side ways where the Smog Pump was. Your best bet would be to find a York the has the left side suction and right side discharge. Most common Yorks are right side suction and left side discharge. Most Fords had the left suck right dis setup though.

I am currently working on a setup to fit a York where the stock AC Compressor to a Trooper fits. Mounting is no problem, I have the mounting plate done, but it is getting it where it can be adjusted. The belt needs to be pretty tight on these things, otherwise they eat belts. Beware that a York just bolted to the engine without any dampening will vibrate like mad. Most Volvos/Mercedes used heavy duty rubber dampners on the brackets.

You might be able to get away with a right suck left dis. just watch the oil output. Im planning on putting an inline re-oiler in mysister. Basicly it traps the oil, then I can shut off the main flow, open a valve at the bottom of the oil catch and have the compressor suck the oil back into itself.
