O.k. guys, I'm prolly gonna get flamed for this, but thats o.k.!! I have a broken axle [long shaft] in a D44 [floater kit, with a detroit locker. Cant get the shaft out. As of now I have removed the shaft from the other side, and have tried knocking it out with 3/4" stell rod, and a BFH[20lb sledge] and it wont budge. What is the next step. Thx.

Hey Knuckle head, if the broken axle piece is sticking out of the carrier how is he supposed to pull the carrier out! Please explain.

I don't think the detroit is a pass through set up. So, you're probably hammering on the cross shaft of the detroit.
I would try a long magnet as someone already stated or open up the pumpkin and see where it's broken. Might be able to pull the carrier to get some wiggle on it.

If you can see enough of the broken shaft, you can weld onto it to pull it out. Used to do that with flanged shafts.
