Hi, I'm Brian and live in Charlotte, NC. I've just been reading so far on the board but hope to start posting some soon. I've got an '88 FJ62 with OME, ARB, 4.56's, 33" BFG's and lots of other stuff. I also have a 77 FJ40 I just started restoring. One more cruiser and its another 88 FJ62 that has been rolled. I'm either going to build it for off road or use the engine/drivetrain in a FJ55 I've been looking at. I'm also member of Upstate Cruisers. Guess that's it for now.

Newbie Tom here checking in.
I'm a retired cattle rancher here in the state of Montana. After selling our 1980 FJ40 "fish mobile"
several years ago, I decided to find another. Came across a 1982 BJ42 in Edmonton, Alberta. Haven't figured out how to post pic's yet but here's a link if you want to have a look. http://www.bloodhand.com/4x4/
The turbo makes all the difference in the world.
I recently came across a 1965 FJ45 short box desperately in need of attention and is well on it's way to a complete frame off. To make a long story short, in order to buy this truck, I had to buy a 1978 FJ40 as a package deal. My wife was thrilled. The 78' is pretty nice and for sale. More pic's if interested. http://homepage.mac.com/tmccall/PhotoAlbum5.html
This group has been a big help to say the least. Thanks to all!!!
How long does it take to shake the "Newbie" thang?

My name is Ron and I own a 77 FJ 40. It has the stock 2F without any smog equip. and with a Flowmaster. 4" TPI lift with soon to be new BFG muds (33's) It is my daily driver, and I have owned her for approx. 2 years. It is my first cruiser, and I am hooked!!! I live in Carson City NV, and work as a paramedic/firefighter for the North Lake Tahoe Fire Dept. I try to keep doing modifications to the cruiser, but as any cruiser owner knows, $$$ is an issue!!!

My name is Steve, I live in Virginia Beach, Virginia and I own a 1984 FJ60 that I purchased from the original owner in Orlando Florida. It has 236,000 miles on it and was bone stock and rusted out when I bought it. I have done the body work myself, and some other upgrades which include DUI (Davidson Unified Ignition) distributor a great improvement on the original setup, tri y headers along with a new Weber 38mm carb(installing next week) BTB 4" front and rear springscoupled with OME 2 1/2" greasable shackles and spring pins, OME nitrocharger shocks, Heavy duty front and rear sway bar, Stainless Steel brake lines, 35x 12.5 Goodyear MTR's on 15x10 Mickey Thompson Challenger wheels(just put on last week) these tires are awesome! New Mean Green starter and high output alternator,I currently have the head off getting ported and polished(I will let you know the results of that when I get it installed) Putting in a new RV grind cam from MAF still on backorder for 3 weeks now, going for the 3"exhaust when my wallet cools down a little. While I am waiting on the cam I am pulling the tranny and transfer case and replacing the seals. I can't wait to get this beast back on the road with all of these new upgrades!!!

I am a newbie, from Natchez, Ms., a couple of months old to this forum. I have a 69 FJ 40 and a 83 FJ 60. The forty has been with me for 30 years, is still painfully stock and original. I do all of the service and maintenance myself. Other than hunting and wheeling(here it is trail riding) it spends a lot of time under a shed. The FJ 60 I purchased a couple of months ago, and I am still gathering parts, waiting for the pull down and inspection. Since the cracked head allowed coolant to get in the oil I plan a total teardown and hope to get by with a freshening up of the bottom end. In the meantime I have been reading engine manual for the 60. I plan to park my GMC 350 automatic 4X4 when the 60 is running.

I also have for parts rigs a 1960 FJ25, 1962 FJ40, 1966 FJ40 and a 1970 FJ40. I have been into cruisers for the last 10 years and do all my own work on my rigs. :p

Hey, Andrei here

I live in San Francisco CA right by Flatty. I grew up with him actually. If you're ever in the area and you see a house with 5 cruisers, that's mine. We have 4 FJ40's(75-78) and an 89 FJ62. The 75 is my brothers with a 91 TBI 350,Turbo350,MiniTruck T-case, Minitruck Axles with 4wheel discs, spring over.... The 76 is mine with an 85 Carb 350,SM465,PS,6pt,Recaro's,and 2.5 inch with 33x9.5's(pizza cutters). Just picked up the 76 a month ago. The 77 is bone stock and a project car. Its a mess right now but will be perfect by the end of summer when I finish the body work on it. I will also be painting it original smurf blue in my garage. The 78(my old one) is also stock with 48,000 original miles. We are the second owners. Its has been fully restored also and looks like it came outta Cool Cruisers but only at a fraction of the cost. Its now my dads and it is fulfilling his childhood dream. <br><br>
The 76 is gonna have a 4 inch thrown on over the summer and I'm gonna get a set of 35's. Thinking about a body lift but not sure because it will be sprung over eventually and I dont want a body lift when that happens. I will also be cutting out the rot and welding in fresh metal. I will probably paint it in my garage too. Also, Flatty will be helping me out with extending the cage and stuff. Anyways, if your in the area and you see my house, stop by, I'll probably be wrenching on my cruiser or something. Late!

OK, my turn. I'm Rich, but only in name. Lives in Holly Springs, NC, which is near Raleigh. Been turning wrenches since I could hold one, my DD is a 'Yota, but this is my first cruiser.

I found my FJ while looking for a trail rig, and struck gold with it. Basically, the previous owner had Terry Moorefield of Winston Salem (he's awesome) perform the suspension and driveline work on it, and she's full of little tricks everywhere ya look.

Immediate plans are to yank the P/O's pathetic wiring attempts and install a GM column with a painless wiring harness, as well as fix the PO's screw up's as I find them  I also need to replace the burned up Ramsey winch with a 8274.

Future plans are for a SO/SR, manual clutch conversion, and a few other tricks. Tires will go from 35x14.5 boggers to 37x12.5 MT/R's.

Hi :flipoff2:

I've lurked on this board for a long time and figured that it was time to thank you all for your creative (and inspiring) fabrication ideas for bettering these awesome vehicles.

I've wrenched and banged everything I've owned from my first Yamahaha 60 to my current stable of TLCs (I bought my '89 FJ62 in 92).

That truck was rolled and became my first wheeler and my latest addition (a '78 FJ40) will soon become water-tight and reliable enough to join it on the trails (mudding but no serious crawling locally).

Thank you again!
Dann

Cheers

Been fooling around on Cruisers since high school in 1981. My stuff is near stock, as I can't make time to wheel, and Connecticut is not what you would call full of trails.:(

Edited two years later since the links and all were no good:

Been accumulating FJ25's. Parted a couple, kept some. Eventually I'll get around to restoring the clean one, or not. http://www.yankeetoys.org/25.htm

I have been around here for a while just absorb alot and talk only when I know what I am talking about.

I live in Parker Colorado.

A year and a half ago I started a complete tear down and rebuild of my '73 FJ40. When I bought it I didn't know a thing about cruisers besides that I wanted one. When I got it it had a lift, 350 conversion (completed ok) Toy 3 speed tranny and 3 speed tcase, 4 wheel disk brakes, and about 1/2" thick coat of bondo over most of the body.

Currently: I have a rolling chasis consisting of a completely dipped and blasted frame with a fresh coat of POR 15 on it, blasted and painted axles, 4" springs in the rear with 2.5" extended shackles - 5.25 lift, 2.5" springs up front with a shackle reversal, and extended shakles - 4.5" lift. A sm465 tranny, 3 speed tcase, and a 1997 5.7ltr vortec motor on the garage floor ready to be installed. The body is now 100% steel. All new body panels welded in. The tub is now blasted and ready for paint. York compressor ready to go in, freshly rebuilt knuckles, aux tank ready to install. I am running 35x12.50 BFG mud terrains.

The name's Kyle, and I'm lucky enough to live only half an hour away from Mark Whatley's shop:D:D:D

Anyways, I'm 19, go to the University of Alaska Anchorage, and my '76 FJ40, which I bought in August, is the first vehicle I've ever owned.

It's got extended shackles (ok, well, HAD, took 'em off for the winter, having Mark put them on (correctly...PO to the PO did a lousy job) Sunday morning(I don't have time this weekend myself, and studded tire deadline is next Wed)), with Bridgestone 33" A/T's. When they die, I'm hoping to put on a set of 33" BFG A/T's...I would go for mudders, but I put nearly 100 miles a day on with my commute. I've got a 6 point cages, wooden dash (stock doesn't fit with the front posts), mid-80's GM bucket seats, a crappy stereo (aka, speakers lying on the floor in the footwells), a carpeted floor (don't do this w/out hercalining the floor first, gotta rip it up to clean up the surface rust this summer), and a really nice set of marine spill-resistant cup holder that match the dash:D

Oh, and a persistant oil leak I just cannot find.:flipoff2:

On the plus side, the body/frame has very little rust, esp. for an AK 'Cruiser. The frame actually still has the factory paint on it. However, this is partly due to it being driven very little by the PO and by his PO in the past 10 or so years...which means there's some seals not too great, but that's not too hard to take care of (I hope...right? RIGHT? I'm not gonna end up in a month long seal replacing project, am I? aaahhhhh!!!!!:p ). Anyways, a lot of the seal problems have fixed themselves in the miles I've put on it since August, even including the pauses for the Poly gas tank, Carb rebuild (which never was actually done...), new fuel pump (twice), new distributor (twice again+2 sets of points/condensers), and a couple other little things that've slipped my mind. Oh, and I've trouble shot my fuel system enough times I can completely redo the entire set of lines in under 5 minutes, counting the time it takes to get out of the thing :p

Hi
My name is Dennis and and I live just outside LA Cal. and
must admit I have never ridden in a lc let alone driven one
but I hope this is soon to change. I bought a 65 fj40 all
stock soft top model with a blown up eng. and top missing,
but has a cherry drop down tail gate and still has the doors.
I found a used f eng hooked up to a later 4 speed that I am going to try and bolt in. I am sure that I will have a few questions
to ask. Great board to learn!

Newbie checking in here... I just bought my first Cruiser. It's a 1973 FJ40, it's mustard yellow and has 118k original miles on it. Pretty clean little ride but it does have the normal cancer in the rear corners. I've owned Toyota trucks for about 4 years now. I wheel my 1985 EFI pickup regularly and I hope to get the Cruiser trailworthy soon. By the way, I'm from Northwest Arkansas. Learned alot from this board already...keep it coming :smokin:

I'v been reading this board for months but haven't posted. I have three toyotas, a solid axle swap pickup I'm parting out/selling, a 96 fj-80, and this winter I built a 69 fj-40. It finally emerged from the garage last week. It has a 350, quadrajet, sm 465, np205(twin stick), dodge 60 front that I cut down, dually 14 bolt rear, 4:10 gears, front welded rear detroit, saginaw steering with newer steering colum (newer firewall patched in), spring over, 38" tsl's on 8-lug 15x8 bead locks and a full cage. It was a hell of a lot of work- I started with frame and body only 4 months ago. Tested it off road- does great- only bad thing is my 1310 driveshafts- need to upgrade. Oh, I forgot to mention it has an ispection sticker!

Thanks for all the help guys

I "think" it has a 2.5 in lift from Rough Country and 6" shackels. 35 12.5 r15 General MT on standard white spoke rims. I am in the process off doing a rear GM disk brake conversion (today) and have a axle from a 77' the has already been swapped to SOA. Soon, very soon. I wheel primarily in Colorado, usually were the big Haymen fire is burning now. Anyway, I love cruisers and my wife is sick of me chasing them down on the road just to talk "cruiser" See you on the trail

Do not mourn for me, for I have found the light. We recently ran the Ajax and Woodpecker trails here near my home and I'm now hooked. I don't currently own a Cruiser, but I'm lookin real damn hard for a FJ 40. I've been lurking here for a few months sponging on (in my best asskissing tone) the wealth of information you guys provide. I'm hoping to find a clean 40 with the V8 swap already done (insert flames from the purists here). My plans are for a decent daily driver that I'm not afraid to turn up some of the trails here in Arizona. Hopefully I'll be posting soon about my new rig and we'll be seein you Arizona guys out on the trail.

I finally tried disabling one of my virus programs, turns out it had a built in security feature, that stopped all cookies....once I knew where the problem was I could open the program and modify the settings.

Hey all,

My name is Rob Blumel. I've been here lurking for a while, but i haven't posted much. I own an 82 FJ60, spring over lift, with 36" super Swamper Radials. Fairey overdrive is sitting on my floor waiting install and the 4.88's are on the way. It currently has 4.11's from a 71 fj40, and is locked in the rear.

I'm running the stock 2F, which has 271K miles and change on it. I bought it in 98 with 218K, and have since desmogged it, had Jim C. rebuild the carb, spectr 2 piece header, had the head shaved .050, and installed a 2 1/2" exhaust.

Ther an Arb bullbar up from, which, when i get a new housing for it, will house a old Warn 5721 8000lb cable actuated winch.

I'm currently searching high and lopw for the perfect FJ40 to use as my daily driver. I'd like a 2F, 33's or smaller, 4 or 5 speed (wishful thinking i know) no rust, discs up front, power steering and AC.

Tall order, i know, but i have the money to spend, so if you have something like this or know of something like this, let me know.

Thanks!

Allright, it works.
My name is Jeff Moore and I'm at Fort Polk, Louisiana. Yes, thats right. "Fort Puke" the armpit of Army assignments. Been reading the posts here for a while off and on for a year or so, and finally decided to jump in now that I got a decent computer.

I'm driving FINALLY my 77 FJ40 after doing a lengthy and somewhat painful converion of sorts. I all at once stripped her down to the frame, and did a half ass restoration on it. Pulled the tired 2f out of her and traded it with Nolen for an ARB bull bar for the 80. Droped a 350 TBI in it, Saginaw PS, and a Spring over. She's doing pretty good, still need to work out some things. Some of which I'll look here for help. Got some pics of her at the link below. And more to come, especially since she's sporting 38.5x14.50 TSL/SX's.
Thanks for all the laughs and info.

I'm in Nashville and a "new" cruiser owner. I've wanted a cruiser since I was 18, and finally got one! I picked up an '83 FJ40 with a new alum. tub. I hadn't ever really turned a wrench before I got this thing, but it's sure put me through a crash course on basic mechanics! It's more fun than I'd have imagined. My name is Gary Bean II, I live in arkansas and have a stock 1978 FJ40 that PO used aluminum foil, fiberglass, and bondo to repair. So I have the body off right now trying to straighten it back up the right way. Looking at SO or 4 inch lift to run 35s. Just got my scout power steering stuff in so hopefully will start on that next
week.

Thanks,

Hi all,
I've been subscribed off an on to the Land Cruiser mailing list for about 5 years. I used to check out the Pirate board occationally a few years back and may have even posted a couple of times but it was so long ago that even the pirate board doesn't remember. I recognize some of the names from some of the threads, mostly from the LCML from past years.

Truck: 87 HJ60, spring over axle, 33s. 5 th cruiser, two beater 60s, a beater 40, and a custom 40 with a Tyke Moses special, 1/4" thick custom tub. Indestructable!

Unfortunately just sold the HJ60 but fortunately not delivered 'till August. Too bad I sold her, Royal Rose and I finished turbo charging it this morning for the new owner and I'm nothing but regrets now. But still dreaming of a 4BT conversion into my next 60.

Hey, I'm Eric. I just bought a 1969 FJ40. It's the first Cruiser I've owned, so I have allot to learn. It's about 99% stock and has very low miles, and has been sitting for years, luckily I'm in AZ, so it looks to be in excellent shape. I've got plans for the usual lift/bigger tires/etc. I have a set of new 33x14.5 SSRs sitting in my garage, I was looking for info to see how they will fit.....

I'm pretty excited about this project, and plan to join the AZ TLC Association.

I'll try not to ask too many dumb questions!

Thanks
Eric

Greetings,

Name is Joe from El Paso, Texas. Just picked up a 1961 JF-40, from a dealer here in el pisan. There are very few land cruisers here in El paso, so I feel fortunate. She is sweet. She has a 350 conversion and very little rust which I will rectify here shortly. This is a great board, I look forward to checking out the post. Later for now...

Well, I guess I should do this. My name is Scott Johnston and I have a '66 FJ40, a '63 parts bucket, a '79 BJ40, a '82 mini and a FJ60 sitting here but not mine. I got the Cruiser (cruzila '66) about 1985. I have done all the MODS myself and the ones I had someone else do have ALL failed in one way or another so I redid them. The list goes...327SBC, SM420, ToyBox4.70, 3speed t-case, stock '79 axles with custom FF in rear, ARB's, On Board air, welder, SOA w OME, 37" MTR's, roll cage etc. Been a member of MTA in San Jose since '92 was President until I moved away and now they won't let me leave the club;) I have been kind of luking around here for a while and joined the LCML recently also. I guess that's all for now,

Hello!

Bought my first FJ40 in July of last year. Flew to Salt Lake to take a look, seemed reasonable, so I drove it home. Been wrenching on it ever since.

Right now I'm in the middle of a mini PS conversion and installation of MR2 bucket seats. I'm also getting the parts together for my sm420 conversion but I don't plan to start that for a couple months....maybe:D

Oh, 69 FJ40 with stock F engine...but if anyone's throwing out a 2f, I've got space in my garage!;)

Hi,
I have an 88 FJ62. It's red and it's currently being redone. Since I live in Wisconsin (an hour from minneapolis,mn) I think it will be easier in the winter for me to have 30 or 31 inch tires. I am also adding rancho shocks, patching rust, and greatest of all, putting my 4 speed manual from a parts 60 into my 62. I am luckily recieving help from Mark Janzen, who has posted about it on this board before. I am only a high school senior and my 62 is my first car. Since my school is fairly small, my cruiser stands out in a parking lot filled with gm, ford and dodge vehicles. next summer i plan on buying a project 40.
if you have any advise for me thanks, because i am always looking for information.

I've been lurking for a while and thought it was about time I checked in. My name is Troy and I have a 66 FJ40 that I flew out to Utah in October 2001 to pick up. It's a great setup. V8, 5speed, 4wheel disk brakes, etc...
A lift is in order soon so I can replace the 31's with 33's. This truck would be a great candiate for a spring over but I don't think I want to go with 35's. My wife would never be able to get in it.

My name is Dave, and now reside in Gilbert, AZ I have a 77-fj40, with 4" Skyjacker, PS, 33 MT's, Warn 8274, F&R ARB's.
A BTB SR kit in the garage, along with the replacement metal
for the normal rust spot under the rear doors. Fortuneatly it is the only place of rust.
Oh yea, forgot to mention the 87 TBI & SM465. One cool thing was I didn't need any DL mods after installing the 350/LC 4-spd combo ! I am having some fuel delivery issues, but suspest it is related to the location of the fuel pump. Cooling seems to be a chore, but additional core & removal of the TS stopped that, until freeway driving occurs.

newbie Mike checking in...

I've owned one or more Land Cruisers since 1979. Currently, I have a 64 FJ40, 68 FJ40, 88 FJ62, and also 86 4x4 Pickup. Actaully, 2 of the Land Cruisers are my wife's but I get to wash, wax, and repair all of them. I currently live in Yuba City, CA and I've been running the Rubicon and other California trails since about 1983.

I've done complete rebuilds on the 64 and the 68 FJ40s including modifying the suspension and drivetrain for running trails like Rubicon yet still be able to legally and safely drive 65+ mph down the highway. Currently, both cruisers have a SBC, auto trans, SOA, SR, 35" tires, lockers, Saginaw PS and a lot of other stuff. If you want more specs then visit myweb site (http://www.geocities.com/rock_crawler_2000)

Hello Everyone,

My name is Brian Lingenfelter and I currently live in Vancouver, WA. I'm married (8 years) with children (6 months, 2 years, and 4 years). We own two cruisers and are still in search of a perfect FJ40.

"Guyute" is a 1972 V8J55 and she is my DD. 350, Turbo 400, Holley ProJection, Disk Brakes up front, and some other stuff. The PPO had most of the work done at Classic Cruisers (formerly Toyota's R US) in 1993. I've been catching up on the basics since I've owned her...cooling, wiring mess, brakes, seals/gaskets/bearings..ect.. Plans include SOA, gears, locker(s), rocker and rear qtr protection....

"Quite One" is a '94 FZJ80. Factory lockers, OME 850/863 w/ firm OME shocks, Kaymar rear tire carrier, and an ARB front winch bar. As you all know the 80 is so capable out of the box. It's seen more trail duty than our 55 so far.

I've lurked on this board for quite awhile. I'm also subscribed to the 55 list, the big list (LCML), and the 80series (OZ and US) Yahoo lists. I'm also a TLCA member, and soon to be a Cascade Cruiser (if they'll have me) member. I'm a big fan of the LC community and hope to meet you all on the trail.

Well lets see here, currently I have 2 rigs. One is a '94 Jeep Wrangler w/ a 4" lift, 33" tires and Eagle 589's; Line-X tub; sway bar disconeccts; custom bumpers, etc I don't care to explain much more because a) it's for sale, and b) you're all Toyota fans and who really cares about a jeep!!!

Vehicle #2: 1970 FJ-40 (has been on ebay a couple times recently). This is the Orange FJ that has an airbag suspension that is adjustable from 3" to 12". Under the hood is a 350 vette tuned motor. Kinda slow! I have a york compressor and the ARB. The rear is spooled, and front has an ARB. Custom bumpers with a warn winch and a roll cage. Tires are a custom BFG tire that i have not seen before, and those just might have to be replaced with some 37 SSR's. It has just about everything, but I'm not sure how it performs on the dirt yet, I've only had it a couple months, and currently its having several seals replaced because it leaks a bunch. I am putting new shocks and steering stabilizer next week, and hopefully after that I'll get to try her out. Any one want a nice Jeep????:roxy:

Name is Andy. Live in Manteca, Ca., originally from San Jose....since the dark ages. Always wanted an FJ40, since high school. Finally bought one in 1999 from a friend that had it for ten years - he bought it from a "little old man" in Az. 2.5 years later, a trillion dollars and two visits to the emergency room.... and major help from orangefj45 (big red), I got my rig. 1975 FJ40, 350fi, automatic trans...etc...etc.
Joined the 45 gang two weekends ago for a jolly good time (the Charlie Show was priceless). Wouldn’t consider another group of people - Orangefj45 and his band of cruiser hoods are the best folk I've met.

Ok- just registered today. I've got a '94 FZJ-80. Completely stock. Reside in Orange County, CA. Use the cruiser for a daily driver. She sees ski trips and ALOT of Boy Scouts. She did a great job of towing our old troop trailer, but our new one is bigger and heavier, so I'm looking into my first mod and considering either the Air Lift air bags or Rancho RS9000x shocks to beef up the suspension. She really sags with the new trailer. Wife drover her for a few years while I toyed with a Porsche 996. Got rid of that piece of junk and glad to be back in the cruiser. I got hooked on a great discussion board at funcarsonline for the 996. I've been looking for a similar community for the LC's and think I've found it. Look forward to 'getting to know you'.:)

I currently live near Chicago, but I'm from Ann Arbor MI. Go Blue! Mostly I moved here because living near Chicago is a whole Hell of a lot better than living near Detroit.
I am building a 74 VJ-40 that I bought as a basket case in 99. A few ($10-12K?) dollars later it has driven down the road a few times, but is still a day or two from being road worthy. It currently sports all the usual mods.
My DD and trail rig is a 95 FZJ-80. Lifted, locked and leather is the only way to go.
I also have a 83 Yota tray back mostly to bug my neighbors. :flipoff2:
I am currently trying to ressurect WCLC. If you're in the area, let me know if you want to help or just join. I'm still struggling to get all the stuff from the previous regime.

What's up everyone? Some of you know me from other places (seeing as I have the same SN everywhere), some of you will know me soon enough. My name is John (hence the SN), I am a freshman Mechanical Engineering student (read..BROKE!) at Texas A&M ('til they kick me out! ;) ). I have a '77 FJ40, SOA, revolvers rear, ARB'd f&r, custom f&r bumpers, cage, sliders, Corbeau racing seats, 4pt harnesses, stock drivetrain, 36x12.5 SX's. Currently it is sitting as I wanted to see if it could swim (IT CAN"T). Actually I got it running fairly well today, but I still need to do a few things before it is trail (or street) worthy again. You can see pics at the Yahoo site in my sig. Most of the pics are of my old suspension, 4" springs and 1.5" shackles w/ 36" TSL radials. Oh yeah, I have done everything except the fabrication myself, with a little help from some friends. And as with all projects, I have MUCH more planned. Any questions, just let me know!

Like I said folks, I'm a LC virgin so be gental with me when I ask stupid questions.

I am in the process of selling my rally car, and getting back into crawlin. I'm thinking of buying a fj-62. I would take a 60, but I like the idea of starting out with fuel injection as I don't have much time right now to work on it (this will change though). What kind of suggestions does everyone have on things I should be looking at, and suggested prices also would be helpful. I used to be a mechanic so you don't have to go light on the technical talk. I live in Longmont Colorado.

hey, all
I drive a '74 FJ55, only 40,000 miles on it (yes, correct mileage, only had 28,000 when we bought it in '98). Was a little bit rusty(surprise) from sitting in someone's backyard from 78-98, so dad & me cut out the rusty spots and welded in approx. 22 sq feet of new metal. after much bondo, gave the entire underside a coat of POR15 paint. also coated much of the inside with the stuff, it's amazing. put disc brakes on the front end, got them out of a '78, along with many other small pieces parts that would have cost a fortune from a catalogue. all new seals, door panels, headliner. Have a chevy 350 small block (2 bolt main) with a chevy new venture 4500 5speed sitting in the garage just waiting for more time& money to put them in, along with power steering. have taken it out many times, i think it'll go more places than i want to go. If anyone can provide me with pictures of how you've done your 350 +power steering in your FJ55, i'd appreciate it (Esp the power steering)

Ok, hi there.

I'm Dave from the UK, I'm 49 and old enough to know better, but what the hell.... who want's to grow up ?

I have a battered old LJ70 'Cruiser with a 2LT Turbo diesel. A great truck. It sits on Ironman coils & shocks with a 3" lift.

My Hilux is one I was given, it's that good. What I'm going to do with it I don't know. But it's gotta see some action somewhere.

I'm heavily involved with the competitive trialling scene over here and am a member of one of the toughest clubs in the UK, I also edit the newsletter.

I've just started to build a new trials motor, sorry it's not a Toy' .
It's two Suzy Samuri chassis front ends welded together, Range Rover axles and suspension arms, Subaru Brat engine and a Daihatsu gearbox.
Why ? Just because it's possible....

:D

Howdy folks, great little web site. Just love reading all those tech articles, sometimes twice. Our trucks are mostly of the diesel variety, I am very fond of those LC engines. We have owned over 30 cruisers to date and a couple have been the gas versions, they only remind me of why I drive diesels only. We are currently working on a 60 series which will recieve a few items, electric lockers with 5.29 gears, turbo, snorkel, SOA, 37 inchers, 42 gallon fuel tank, ARB front and rear bumpers, rock sliders, custom inner front axles built out of 4140 heat treat and stress relieved, longfields, full floater rear axle with factory toyota hubs, ARB roof rack, 24 to 12 volt converter, compressor, welder, stereo, new headliner, seats recovered, new carpets, paint and body. We found a 62 with a mint rear section from doors back, the idea is to cut the back section of the truck body off were there is rust and slide the rust free section into place. I would like to bob the rear a few inches, but the customer wants it stock.
Our next restoration will be another 60 series, this time it will be a HJ60 and the customer wants his truck built up the same as the BJ60 we are working on. My favourite truck to work on is the old BJ42 and I have really taken to the FJ55. Hope to find one in good shape with no engine tranny and pop in a 3B, five speed, turbo and factory power steering for the wife to drive.
We are coming up to our third year and seem to be finding more work than I anticipated mostly through word of mouth, we do not advertise. I have been told that after the fifth year you can stop eating craft dinner and maybe even take a holiday. It is definitley a labour of love and 90% of my customers always comment on how lucky I am to be doing something I enjoy and that is 100% true.
Best regards and keep up the good work on this web site.

My name is Thom Placier and I live in Georgetown KY. I work in the Plastics Department at the big Toyota plant here, where we make the Camry, Avalon, and Sienna. My Cruiser is a 69 FJ40 with a 2" shackle lift and sagging springs, soon to be replaced . The stock 3-on-the-tree has been replaced with a 4-speed from a 78 FJ40 and this winter I'll mate the 3-speed transfer case to it. The F motor is from a 71 and has been bored out .030 and has an exhaust header, K&N filter, and a glass-pack. Other mods include buckets from a Celica, jump seats from a 79 FJ40, roll bar, 3-point harness, and a Krylon paint job for easy touch-up after wheeling in the trees here in KY.

Thanks for providing this forum for us to share ideas!

In all it's glory.
The thing really is quite a POS but I love it anyways.:D
I have had it for 13 years and have gone through many stages of uses.
For the first 7 years it was pretty much a trail machine(although not as exotic as some in here)set up for the NW here.
I just don't have time to wheel anymore so it's pretty much a street cruiser at the moment.

468" BBC, Turbo 350Trans, Stock T case, Stock axles with 4.11s and lockrights. Front axle is cut and turned. Stock springs with leaves removed for springover, Custom steering. Like I said before not as elaborate as some of the rock buggy cruisers in here but it does wheel very well.
LOL some of the stuff in here is over my head.;)

Hi i'm Jeff I own a land cruiser,
I have a 1970 Land Cruiser that i have owned for a bout two years. I am 19 years and am going to collage at Fort Lewis in Durango. My land cruiser is slightly modified, it has 2.5 BDS lift and a 2.5 hyper shackle lift. It has a F engine that you could mabey call a high performance F. I have a DUI (Davis Unified Ignition), a carbuator of a 2F, and i also have a set of Man-A-Fre headers. it runs pretty good, but could always run better. Does anyone know how to work on a set of drumb brakes that are old cheaply?

Hi I'm jason from Sacramento, minutes from the Rubicon trail. I have a 72 FJ40 SOA with FJ55 springs in the rear which put the rear end back about 4". I put the original 40 springs from the rear in the front and turned them around putting the front axel forward about 3" and made some custom drop shackels, lots of articulation. I am running the 2F engine with headers and a jacobs ignition. Not a whole lot of power on the road but I can make it from sacramento and all the way trhough the Rubicon Trail and back to sac with out having to refuel. I do have a confer tank in the back. I am running a Lock-right in the rear and open in the front. 35" tires, SM 420, Toyota Xfer, front and rear disc. I pretty much live on the con in the summertime. Hi,
I own a 65 fj40 it currently has a chevy 350 and 3sp tranny and transfercase. I've replaced the suspension with sor's 3" kit. I'm also finishing up on a front disk conversion. It also has power steering but I'm not sure what kind. I purchased the truck about a year ago and haven't driven it yet. I'm slowly working on it. My goal is to get it running in a couple of months (with the help of the forum) I hope.
I also have an 86 fj60 with OME and 33" tires, other than that
its pretty much stock.

I have had my Cruiser since I was 15 and It has been a slow process, It is a 77 drivetrain (stock) on a 66 frame (no emissions) with a series 1 aqualu tub and a front cage (building a new one) I do 99% of my work (dont trust my welding yet). The modifications to the vehicle include saginaw p/s, Man-A-Fre 4 inch springs (yuck) no lift Shackle reversal (very tough), custom rear bumper with reciever and d-rings (very strong), Downey 5 1/2 in extended shock mounts (not installed), Bilstein 7100's (not installed), 4.88 ring and pinions, detroit rear, Arb front (all not installed) and I hope to be getting a Toybox (4.7:1) soon.

Hi my name is Bill. I live in the Seattle area. Bought the wife a 96FZJ80, got jealous and picked up a 78FJ40 in september. Got a stock 2F, rebuilt stock carb, headers, 2 1/2" skyjacker lift, 33x12.5 BFG MT's, saginaw p/s , tuffy console. Drove it up from Salt Lake City by myself--windows rattling, coughing/sputtering nightmare!! PO had a jet in the carb you could walk thru Got around 8mpg for 900 MILES. anyway, got that sorted out , new suspension, tires etc.. May need a valve job, tho'

Great site, lots of action. I was checking the one at off-road.com very few replies to messages.

I have the stock f motor that doesn't run the best, a sm 465 to a 203 reduction box to the stock t-case. I am running a shaved 86 and newer mini truck rear end with 4.10 V-6 gears with welded spider gears. The front diff. I built, it is a shaved mini truck center section with dana 60 outers that also has welder spider gears. I am a student, working towards a BS in Civil Engineering. When I am not studying or wheeling I work at twisted customs building tube frame chassis's. This last summer I sold my prize possession a restored 1966 fj-45swb. I didn't sell it for what i wanted but that is okay.

Hello,
My name is Clyde Lipp a Civil Engineer, originally from Rapid City, SD been living and working in Las Vegas for the past 3 years. I currently own a wheeler that started life as a long box 85 Toyota SR5, but through 32” of removed sheet metal and frame it takes the form of a 100” wheelbase 4 Runner. The truck has been in a few issues of the Toyota Trails and in the 2001 Toyota Trails calendar. And has lived a pretty hard life running most of the hardcore trials in the Black Hills and most of the local hardcore trial in the Vegas valley, plus one run through the Rubicon (taking no by passes). The truck was pretty set up for the time it was built (4 years ago); stock 22R mated to 5 speed tranny and dual stock geared transfercases. 86 or newer rearend loaded with 5:71 gears and a lockright. 85 front end loaded up the same as rear, with self built cross over steering setup. The suspension is all self built Mazda packs in the rear with buggy springs and self built Toyota rear packs in the front. 9000 lbs Warn Winch and on board air. This whole package rolls on 36” x 12.5” x 15 TSL Swappers. I currently don’t have the truck here in vegas, it’s up in SD, getting the crap wheeled out of it by my brother Darrin. Breaking trails with the boy at Twisted Customs. I am currently hoarding parts and dreaming up the next truck to start building, most likely a four seat buggy with portal axles and GM V8 power and coil over’s. The 85 Toy was the second truck that I have built from the ground up for my self, the first was a 1980 FJ40, nothing special just a clean truck with a V8 conversion. Sold that and started picking up mini parts until I had enough to put together the truck detailed above. The only real amazing thing about the 85 Toy is the $$ invested $3500. That’s all for a truck that has made it through quite a few 5 rated trails with easy. Almost forgot it’s been on is side 4 or 5 times that’s why a new truck is in store.

My name is Paul Willis aka Crow. I live in Austin, Tejas. For years I wheeled a built 79 Bronco and a hammered flat-fender with my friend, mentor and local Cruiser guru, Rich Phelan. Through his constant heckling I bought a bone stock 82 Toy P/U around 1988 or so and began slowly making it trail worthy(Detroits, low gears, Marlin dual case, tweaked stock hybrid leafs for articulation, etc.) usually only fixing what broke. Rich introduced me to the TLCA and we attended GSMTR a few times(where my wife and I concieved a child in 96) and a few other trail events. Rich had always been my spotter and one of my best friends. He unfortunately died a while back and my wheeling actually fell off a bit without him calling me every weekend. In his passing I ended up with two of his Cruisers; a 71 FJ40 rolling chassis/body that was to be a father/son project(and still will be with my son) and a beaut of a shell of a 71 FJ55 that he was working on when he died. I hope to one day have both of these Cruisers going as a tribute to my good friend.
In the meantime, I'm getting serious with my mini truck(most of it's chassis is finally broke) and am replacing the springs(all-pro front, aor orbit eyes rear), steering(Kong's Hi-steer) brakes(4wheel disc with LC/Fourrunner/chevy parts) and finally stepping up from my tried and true 275/85 Buckshots to 37" Goodyear MTRs.
Thank you for your time and I hope to see you on the trails.

Oh yeah...My wife's DD is an FJ62. We are a Toyota family!

I will probably learn more from the board than I will help, oh well.

'73FJ55 is the garage prince

An Alberta girl but located in UK for this year and missing my cruisers like crazy. Get a little edgy when I'm forced to shell out for a bus or a taxi.... :mad3: argh.... only gotta make it til June to go wheeling on the Rubicon.

Hello-
I am a newbie named Scott. I live in Dover, NH. I am a golf course superintendent. I like working on my rigs...95 Tacoma 4x4 and 95 Land Cruiser. I spend a lot of time on Ebay. I occasionally buy cars and trucks on Ebay and sell them for profit. It's an interesting way to pass the time, plus I get to play with the toys I buy before selling them.

well.... okay, since I couldn't get my old account to work, I had to re-register :( A little bit about me... well, I've been wrenching on cars since I was old enough to hold a wrench... I work at a local auto parts store here in Idaho, and I'm a slumlord (I just bought a small trailer park to support my baad cruiser habit!) I've been wheeling for a few years.... I sold my nice new truck to buy a beater 73 fj40, which has mainly been my daily driver until I got the uncurable wheeling disease... now I drink beer, wrench, break things.. and spend more time in my garage than with my significant other :) I'm in the process of finishing my power steering, and other cool trail goods......(most of them I find here using the SEARCH feature!)
just hope not to get flamed too bad ...... keep cruisin'

OK so I'm a Newbie!

My name is John Holmaas and I have problem(whoops wrong group) Live in Gig Harbor WA, sell real estate(hence the Landpimp)

Bought my 1st Cruiser 8 years ago, have been in love with Cruisers sense I was 13 years old(I;m now 37). 1st Cruiser was my 92fj80 bought on my 29th birthday.

Cruisers.....

1992 Fj80
OME suspension, with spacers front and rear, running 35 BFG MT's
ARB's and 4:88's, ARB bar w/12k Warn, dual batts, and way nore crap inside than I could ever list. It's been a great Cruiser.

1988 FJ62
....this is the stolen one, bone stock with 33x9.5, got this for my girlfriend Connie and its her driver. Hope to get it back.

1986 FJ60
this is mint(the nicest I have ever seen, just trying to get a rise out of you all) and has 98,000 miles. OME suspension, 33x10.5's on black steel wheels, ARB bar, have 4:11's and a rear ARB ready to swap in. It's was a local rig, no rust, back seat was covered in plastic wrap sense 1986.....super good shape.

1978 FJ55.....stock with LOTS of rust/ROT, runs good(has under 100lbs of compression however) but looks like crap....no hope of saving it so I'll drive it till it becomes a parts Cruiser or hack it up and make it a trail rig. Pieces of the body fall of when I hit a bump.....looks like it may be Connies new driver...hehehehe :)

1967 FJ45 long bed. faded blue and pretty solid(could use a bed and tailgate but they are savable) Got this summer, trailered it home and went to work on it. Now has 2f(it came with it) OME suspension, all steering bits replaced, shackle reversal, 35 MTR's. disc brake front end, rear full floater with ARB, Warn 8274 and a bunch of other stuff. still running the 3 speed(on tree) but will get a H55F soon and mini truck PS. Damn fun truck and I drive it all the time(put 7k on it this summer) will do(no shit) 85mph(on GPS) on the freeway and is a joy to drive, except 1st gear SUCKS! If you look on page 162(I think) of the SOR catalog you will see it as it was being pulled from the woods in Napa CA.....behind a fj55! The original doors say Stihl Chainsaw.....owned by a chainsaw shop till the late 90's then drug up to Friday Harbor WA.....then I got it.

1965 Fj40 with corragated hard top, this thing is cool and very stock(like 95%, no rust no rot, it was owned by a church in eastern WA untill a few years ago when a church member bought it for his son as a project. Sadly the father and son rebuilt the distibutor and didn't get in seated all the way......so it had no oil presure and toasted the motor as i drove it home :( Someday it will get a resto, I'm really thinking back to 100% stock but might update with 2f(or 74f) and disc brakes but other than that stock. FWIW it really is a 65 and has an OEM heater that was NOT installed at the dealer, kinda an oddball 40......me likes.

have a parts 67 fj40 as well, which was in an acident with 66666 miles........go figure!

Mom(who is 60) also is a Cruiserhead and has a 97fzj80(40th) locked up. She would like a 79+ fj40.....so I'm looking for nice stocker for her

Honestly I don't do any extream wheeling, I wheel(but not even much anymore) but I LOVE Cruisers, Cruiser history and Cruiserheads. I use my Cruiser for work more than anything.

I'm fairly mechanical but not a mechanic, but can tear apart any of my rigs and sometimes even manage to put them back together!

Just got a welder, Miller 175.....but have never welded but need to learn. I have no garage(that any of my rigs will fit in at least) but am building a shop this spring.

Oh and my spelling and gramer SUCKS.....those that know me can attest to that!

Hi Everyone,
I'm Jeremy and first of all gotta say that this is a Great Forum, been lurking for a month or so getting an education in cruisers.

I picked up a '74 fj-40 a few weeks ago---lots of potential--stock PTO, 31" BFG's, allum. Wheels, 2-f, headers. Some rust--rear quarters, otherwise pretty clean throughout. While the rust is fairly minimal, the vehicle is sorely in need of some tlc. So i decided to take her down to the frame and rebuild from the ground up.

Now we're talking education! My biggest mech. job prior to this was changing a water pump on an old chevy van. I'm taking lots of pics and leaving bread crumbs so I can find my way back when it comes time to put it all back together again. I'm a student at CU--just moved to Colorado from Hawaii--not too much 4-wheelin in Honolulu (but loads of surfin brada). My wife (who owned a '78 fj-40 years ago in Alaska and still mourns selling it) and I decided we both want cruisers--so this is the first one will probably go to her (although I may have trouble handing the PTO over to her  )
I'm sure I'll have lots of questions and I imagine this project will take at least till mid summer--but so far I'm having fun with it (not getting too frustrated with snapping rusted bolts . . . yet ;) )

Hey all, Got ta love being new somewere. My name is Kerry, in the Dawsonville Georgia area. I been running a 78 FJ40 for the last 5 years on the trails in North Georgia and Tennessee. I am currenty the Vice President of the Georgia Bounty Runners 4wd Club out of Atlanta. I typically wheel with a mix bag of J**ps and Chevy/Ford Products and love the rilvary between us in the club. Honestly, Im not afraid of Trail 12 at Tellico but love camping as much as wheeling. Its a Mans gossip hour around a campfire.
I tow with a 96 K3500 and I have a Lance camper in the bed as well, very much addicted to road travel and love to get away from the stress of self employment. Currently the 40 has bit of modification, fornt and rear ARBs. Stock axels, 4sp tanny with 3 sp case, DC driven York air with 2.5 gal tank. full role cage, 8274-50 front locker. Hot water shower(home made), 190amp alternator (off a road tractor). Brown camo desert striped paint job, 2 gallons of bondo, and a few bumps and bruises. Anyhow, thanks for having me and look forward to the learning curve.

Hello, been lurking for a while now, decided it was time to get more info on some axles, so I finally registered.

'73 FJ55 in many stages. Currently, it's sitting the garage (where it spends most of it's life) awaiting some new axles. When it's done it'll have: 350, ranger od, h42, J30, volvo portals, 9.00R16 XLs, Scout PS, PTO, cut rockers & quarters, various other other things. This past summer I took it to Cruise Moab, then upto Alaska for a month.

I've also owned in the past 6 years a '79 55 (now in pig heaven) a '74 V8J40 (killed in an accident, V8 doner) and a '71 FJ40 (sold)The pig progresses with time and money....

Thanks for any info, and this newbie know how to search. :D

My name is Sean, and I’m a newbie. I’ve been a newbie for 5 hours now and I just cant stop!

All of that aside, I live in Northern Virginia and have a ’71 FJ40 project (like there is such thing as a non-project 40) that I’ve been dragging my feet on getting road legal/safe. Pretty much a stock rig with PU discs in the front. Other then that I shot the paint, put in a roll bar, new seat and herculined everything that the stuff would stick to. Getting ready to (read: finding the time to) redo the tie rod ends, electrical work, and anything else that I see that needs a fixin along the way. My daily driver is a ’95 Tacoma 4X4 with a billion miles on it and a Ford F-350 with a drill rig in the bed. Glad to meet yall and cant wait to learn a thing or two and trade a few stories.

Hi all,

I'm from Sydney Australia

I have a 74 FJ40

253 V8
4 speed
PTO winch
4.11s
Springover and U bolt flip
Rancho 9000s
35" BFG muds
ARB airlockers front and rear

Its a hardtop, but I am about to go soft top. Thinking of putting wheel spacers on for width.

Also toying with the idea of running LPG as the standard carb on the 253 doesn't like angles

Well, I'm a relative newby to the Land Cruiser world. I finally pried a '78 FJ40 out of my dad's hands back in Sept 02. I am a Wyoming-native turned Denver-transplant following 7 years in the Marine Corps.

Given the recent acquisition of the FJ40, I've started hitting up the forums so that I can learn what I can from the veterans & share whatever I can.

As for my 40, it had sat around for the past 5-6 years, so I started off this project by getting it road-worthy again. That work was followed by swapping out the stock fuel tank (due to rust & 3 plugged fuel filters). I then started on some modifying/personalizing by installing a 4" Skyjacker lift with 33x10.50 BFG MT's wrapped around 15x8 Genuine Steel white Rock Crawlers.

The main future projects for Tony (my dad's nickname for it) include:

Body restoration
Engine rebuild....stock 2F
Dual-battery conversion
HEI conversion
Air lockers...maybe Detroit's new ElecTrac's...if they grace the LC world with them
Soft top & doors for summer running
Relocation of my Warn XD9000i from the Dakota to the LC
Additional tank, or another tank swap...to get some cruising distance
Bucket seats...prolly junkyard specials...can't justify $300+ for after-market buckets when I can pull them out of a wreck for a fraction of the price
5-point harness
and the list just keeps going....heh

I'm from Sweden (Stockholm/Mariefred) and owns a LC HDJ-80 from 1997 and, so far, in a extremely good condition.
The cruiser is for extensive expedition work and is equipped there after. The Safari-Intercooler provide tremendous good torque. With a little bit higher turbo charge, the engine gives about 250 hp and 500 NM @ 1200 rpm. Further more, EMU kit for a 4" lift. 3",5 exhaust. Sepson hydraulic winch. Custom bumpers front and aft. Togther with the 80 I also have a Land Rover Defender 110 CSW Td5 Expedition (2001). A great tractor!

Hello all,

Been readin' these boards for a long time now, finally decided to make the plunge from lurker to poster.

Bought my '68 FJ40 about a year and a half ago. All stock, except the booty fab long shackles and the bald-ass 31" BFG's.

A brief history of 'learning experiences' in The Little Land Cruiser That Could:

Big Sur
Buddy and I were out wheelin' and campin' in Big Sur. A series of bad decisions occured, see if you can count them: Too many beers, more beer, and a couple of more beers later, we decide to go night driving. He says 'let me drive', to which I reply 'OK'. He drives it alright, straight into a tree at about 30-40 (hard to tell at night with no speedo). We escpare unhurt, thanks only to the Cruiser Gods, have to hike 3 damn hours, uphill, drunk, to his truck. Cruiser had a bent frame. I did a frame swap, by myself, in 10 straight days.
Lesson: Don't drink and drive. That frame could have been our spines.

Wheelin' in the Boondocks of Death Valley
Three front driveshaft bolts backed out, spins around on the forth, put a hole in the oil pan. Pulled it and went in search of shade tree mechanics at the 'shop' an hour away in Nevada (who are the only monkeys around with a brazing torch) spend half the day to patch up a small hole, and charge me $55 plus tax for the honor. It leaks again by the time I get to Furnace Creek where the motor blows out a freeze plug. Give up. Towed home.
Lesson: carry JB Quik, Bondo, brazing torch and rod on long trips; use locknuts on EVERYTHING.

Attempted Wheelin' Trip in Mohave
Broke piston 10 miles outside of Baker. Towed home. Rebuilt the motor with one new piston, whole set of rings (cuz they don't let you buy just one piston worth), new rod bearings cuz they were on sale.
Lesson: None. Where's the fun in driving a vehicle that you KNOW is going to get you there every single time? My fiancee just can NOT understand this..

-tom
If you want to know what NOT to do, just give me a call!

My name is Jeffrey. I own a 73' FJ-55, 4" SOR SUA, Rancho 9000's, a J**P "Runk" Bumper, 68' Impala GM V8, Toy 3 speed (soon to be SM465) 3 speed case ( soon to be 4 speed w/ 3 speed gears) stock interior, white exterior, came from CO. I also have an 84' 4runner, newly swapped and hopefully operating soon 22RTE, stock tranny (rebuilt), rear lock right, 4" springs, white exterior and brown interior, All-Pro bumpers front and rear, 33's on wagon wheels, soon to drop in gears to the transfer and add a winch. I have built an 81' mini, 85' FJ-60, parted out a 79' FJ-40, owned and sold a 60' FJ-25, and of course my two current projects. I wheel the 4runner and will tow it with the 55, my girlfriend talked me into the Pig and it took a real hard arm twistin' (yeah, right!) Now I am set on yota's I believe, unless I find a cheap project 40, or 45, or another 60, or maybe a 62, or an 80??!?!?! hell, even a 79'-81' mini might catch eye, one can never have enough!;)

Hi my name is Sean and I'm in the Air Force stationed in Anchorage, AK. I don't own any Cruiser yet, but I hope to remedy the situation soon. I've been lurking on LCML and the DTLC mailing lists and have posted a few times.

So what turned me on to Cruisers? Well my dad owned a FJ45 back in the early 80's and ever since then I loved them. I'm now in the market for a 60 series, anybody want to sell me their HJ60? LOL!!

Hi, My name is Joe, and I got into Land Cruisers when my dad bought his about 10 years ago. I inherited it when he got a newer truck, and it had been sitting around for a few years.
One brake master cylinder and a carburetor later, it is my DD when I am at home.

It is mostly stock, but if anyone happens to have a spare NV4500
laying around...well, it wouldn't be stock for much longer:D

My name is Ed Long, I live in asmall town 30 miles south of Kansas City. My son bought a '66 FJ40 that 'WE' were going to work on together, HA! Two years later, I've bonded with the LC. He's at MU busy rounding off the corners on my F-150 4x4.
As I said, it is titled a '66 but I think it is older than that, maybe a '64-65. The motor is a 1974 F. I've completely redone the body and interior. It has full hardtop and soft top, rollbar, latemodel jumpseats and a Tuffy console. I'm changing out the dist for an HEI from a '80 chevy PU. I did a shackle reversal, so it has about 1 1/2" of lift and I run 31 10.50 Goodyear AT's, because it is mainly a driver.
I realize this is a pussy configuration for most of the guys on this board, but I'm old, and the body is too cherry to be trailtrashing it...yet. Looking to find a disc axle or one that can be converted
to disc.
Okay, I'm ready..flame on

Do they have a geriatric section?

When I was going to college (1996-1998) - it was in North Seattle, WA - I used to own 1974 FJ40 (all stock F, 31" MT) zebra stripped, which I had converted to V8 Chevy small block 305. Unfortutantly, I didn't have enough cash to fix it once and for all and I had to sell it to one happy Boeing employee. Later on, I've purchased 1984 Toy Long beg with 22R - all stock except nice alloy wheels and brand new 31" BFG ATs.
When I've returned to Russia I was desperate to find 40s series Cruiser and I was lucky enough to find one in Moscow. My current Cruiser has appox 100" wheelbase (BJ44 - it's made for Japanese internal market, mid wheelbase, never imported to Europe/US), 35"R15 General Grabbers MT on 10x15 American Racing alloys, SPOA, cross-over steering (AllProOffRoad Hy-Steer steering arms), power steering (HJ80 tie-rods, drag-links, steering box), conversion from RHS (Righ hand steering) to LHS (Left), stock Toyota 2B (3.2) Diesel engine, Toyota PTO winch (H41 tranny), torn to a fame - planning to build custom roll cage/tube chasis. Lot's to be done.

Rgdz,
Andrey Nechaev

Hi, I'm Amanda and I am in the long process (for me) of rebuilding my 66 FJ40. It was a gift from my husband for our 19th anniversary, almost three years ago. After doing extensive bodywork (on the cruiser) I am now into the drivetrain realm, with all kinds of cool stuff to learn. I am a crafts-person by trade (and in my opinion it's ok to still say "craftsman" as "man" is the name of our species-libbers get over it!) and I'm finding this to be a very cool way to have some creative fun. I normally work in leather and fur, but steel has got it's hook in me too. My shopping list dreams include a plasma cutter, a roto hammer, an english wheel and a TIG welder-not your average mall shopper. I also love my horses, and to deal with that obsession, I'm building a 1950 Chevy panel truck on a 76 4x4 chassis to pull my horsetrailer. (But I'll have to wheel it someday too-you oughta see where I wanna ride-where the trail ends is what the horses are for). I'm here to learn and maybe repeat what I've learned for others to use, so thanks for all the great input and ideas. This is like having 50 brothers to ask questions to. None of mine are into cruisers! My oldest has a Heep Wrangler and wants to do some travelling and wheeling this summer, so I gotta get ready! I need a winch...

Greetings!

My names Chris and I'm in Shippensburg PA 17257

I have a 74 FJ40, a 93 FZJ80 and possession of dads 84 FJ60:D

My 93 FZJ80 is stock with factory lockers. I took the running boards off so I've got good clearance now. I also put 285/75/16 (33's) Interco Truxus tires on and they are amazing in the snow!

future plans are:
metal hanging off the sides to protect from *outchies* (I've got a bud who's making sliders for me)
OME 2 1/2" lift
ARB front Roo pusher with a spot for a winch
somewhere to put my darn spare tire......

The 74 FJ40 is a project that never ends..... currently has:
4" Pinnacle Engineering lift springs
3 sp with no syncro in 1st (4 sp sitting in carport)
4:10 (or 4:11 I can never remember) gears
35x12.5x15 Truxus
much frankensteining on the body.
totally rebuilt 74 1-1/2F engine, ballanced, .040 over, much shaving on the head, SS valves, headers, Jim C carb, almost stock grind cam

I'm working on brakes and steering still. It's currently relegated to back roads under 50mph *scary*

anyway! enough about me!

Hey I'm new to the Land Cruiser but not toffroading or rockcrawling. I sold my ARB Ranger and got a 91 FJ80. I got off of ebay for $5433, the miles are high but all the other FJ80s and FJ60s had high miles too. Its all stock for now. I'm in the US Marines and I'm stationed in Yuma, Az (AKA HELL). Here is the link to the Criuser I got. I am going to pick it up this Fri. I can't wait.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=6443&item=2404197862&rd=1

I have a few quesitions about the Cruiser.

Does the 91 FJ80 come with stock lockers? I would like to run 35"s on the Cruiser. What size lift will give me enough room for the 35"s?

hi im Isaac, i live in Ohio and am 17. I just recently bought a 1974 fj40 thats in fair shape (well kinda more rust than cruiser, but hey it runs :) ) So i'm repairing it not to show condition or anything but just enough to get it road worthy and trail ready. Its loud, rusty, and kills a jeep so i love it. Well this summer all my time (and money) is prob. goin on repairing "the beast" and hopefully she'll be in decent shape by the end of it. And of course i'm a newbie so i hope wont get flamed to bad.

Hey Everyone,
My name is Sam. My internet alias is swon. I have a 1977 Toyota FJ-40. Here goes. It has a Chevy 305 engine, a soon to be added SM 420 4-speed with an early 3-speed t/c, TSM 4-wheel disc brakes, FJ-80 4-wheel disc master cylinder, No-Slip in the rear, Lock-Right in the front, Painless wiring harness, and Auto Meter gauges. The truck has a shackle reversal, 2.5" and 4" Skyjacker springs, power steering, a full-cage, belts and harnesses out of a US Army Cobra gunship helicopter, the frame has been boxed and an airtank replaced the rear crossmember, the body has been replaced with an aluminum Aqualu body. Right now I'm running 33" BFG AT's but I'm changing the ring and pinions to 4.56's and going with 35's. It'll never be finished and I'll never get out of it what I have in it. It's my daily driver. Everyone thinks it's a Jeep. I just bought a TOYOTA badge for the front so maybe they'll see the light soon!
Thanks, great forum!

The 60 runs pretty good with only a couple spots of rust and the 80 is great. It's also the my wifes, so I don't get much seat time in it...

I'm Ted Christian, Missoula, MT.

'76 FJ40, 350/sm465/TLC 4sp transfer, Saginaw, York, dual batteries, other small stuff.

I have a TBI in the corner waiting. Need bigger rubber, more suspension, and a real roll cage, among other things. There's no end to the wish list (never heard that before have you?)

I like to do everything myself if I can. That's what I like about priate4x4 - lots of experience here. Thanks. I'll try not to get too cocky for a rookie! (Of course, nobody reads this newbie thread anyway, right, except newbies??)

My other passion at the moment is dirt bikes, but I dig scuba and boating and camping and a hundred other great passtimes. Can't seem to settle into just one.

Hi

Bought this crappy bj-40 '75 last year and i think i do complete rebuild on it someday. Now im just offroading in forest for fun... Just bought goodyear wrangler mt/r 35-12,5-15 tires and seems that there will be some work to do before they fit under my rig.

I have '68 fj-40 as spare parts and i'm interested to switch its lower ration transfer case to bj if possible? Other things that might happen are: turbo, lockers, spring over axle conversion...

Gary here, newbie to this forum. I live in ft. worth Texas and have been a Cruiser head since I bought my first 60 new in 1984. The second came in 87, third came in 99 and the last so far ws in 03 when I finally got my dream Cruiser. A 1987 HJ61VX with only 36k miles. What an awsome ride. I have to thank Darren Bierman for helping me out with the purchase, without him, probably no truck. My other truck is a 89 FJ62 that recieved a body off frame resto with quite a few mods thrown in along the way. Between the 2 trucks, my wife Kelly, the boss, and daughter Shelby, the other boss, we stay very involved with our other, adopted family, Lone Star Landcruisers. I have to thank all of them for keeping the Landcruiser spiit alive for me.

Hey, my names Kristian. I've been into cruisers since I was little and rode around in my dads. My current rig is a '92 FJ80 with the OME heavy load lift kit (850/863), ARB winch bar, BFG Mud Terrains 33x9.50's. I previously owned an FJ60 which I was a great truck too. I'm big into outdoor recreation in many forms. My truck is my daily driver. I use it for road trips with 4wheeling excursions, for farming, local fourwheeling, and getting into some great backcountry areas just to see the scenery and get away from others. Here's a shot of my truck.

Hi my name is Jamie and I live in a one horse town called Burekup in Western Australia. Where I live It's not a matter of wether you like Cruisers or not, It's wether or not you want to walk home!!Here we have a diverse range of seriously hard terrain that will challenge any 4x4, so naturally, Cruisers are everywhere. I have an '82 HJ 47 Troop carrier with all the bits that you need and I know it'll get me where I'm heading and get me back again. I come from a long line of Cruiser junkies so, I've been working on them and driving them since I was Knee high, and I know a fair bit about them. Anyone into Land Cruisers is O.K. in my book, so I hope to hear from you all.

Hi my name is Tony

I live in sacramento, can't wait to get a little closer to the hills.
I had a 83 yoat, but one terrible night i got terribly to drunk and could not see very well. I was coming dow this trail, it was dark...so dark:( ... I could not see very well. Well just my luck there about a 5 foot drop and i rolled end over end. I had jus put my 36 inch super swamps on, rebuilt my rear end. anyway back to ther point. I had to be back to work the next day, so i had to leave so i can get ahold of my comrade at work to come and pull my stupid ass out. When we got back EVERYTHING WAS GONE!!!!!
Engine, tires, rear end, front end, leaf springs, t-case,tranny,shocks,exhaust, everything right down to the fuckin frame. I had no choice but to pull off the V.I.Ns, plates and grind off the V.I.N # on the frame and cut my losses. That was one of the hardest things i ever went through. Right now i am looking for another yoat. I found a full size k5 i think i am going to get for now, it's a LITTLE larg but i will make do. I also learned a huge lesson from all of this. I need to have more respect for my rig, and i need not to drink so much, last but not least i HAVE to learn how to call it a night. I will never leave my rig anywhere ever again, i will bumb it if i have to.

AnywaysI am 20 years old. I haveonly been wheeling for about 1 year. Never reall got to go out that much either. can't wait to get my next money pit. all i want to do in my life is mary my little valkyrie and wheel every day of my life. ;) someday!!!!!

I also wanna let you guys know that you have done an excellent job with the web site, i have learned alot from you and your members. keep up the good work. RaHoWa!!!!!

My name its Rico, I live in Utah, Oringinally for Panama. I bought an fj40 form a guy for $1000. Minor rust, no body damage, and he thought it was running bad. I took it home change the oil, new spark plugs, you know, the basic tune up, and it runs great. I got all of the rust fiber glassed, it primed and ready for paint.

I did a front disc brake conversion with my buddy Kevin and we will be doing the rear discs as soon as I convince my wife to let me spend the money.

I'm hoping I can get the rear discs on soon so I can take it to moab. If you happen to be there and see a cruiser with a homestar sticker, all primer and a brown guy driving it, make sure to say hello. ;)

I have been collecting cruisers lately and have had some friends posting questions for me. I finally decided maybe I should join and ask the Newbie questions for myself.

It all started about 11 years ago when I spotted my 63 FJ40 at a friends Dad's house. I was home on leave from the Navy, actually on my honeymoon, and purchased it on-the-spot for $1000.00. It's been an addiction ever since.

My most recent acquisition is an 84 FJ60 "donor" vehicle (last week) for my 65 FJ45 LWB p/u (week before last).

Now I have a dilemma, do I restore the FJ45 to stock or put the 60 drive train under it?

I can put the 60 drive train in my 73 FJ55, which is my daily driver, and is 100% stock except for the Toy 4spd mated to original t-case off the 3spd transmission. Take it's F and stick it in the FJ45 and keep the 3-on-the-tree.

Too many options...

Howz it going? I'm new to 4-wheelin. I've always liked LC and Land Rovers finally found myself in a position to buy one. Then I decided I didn't want to get stuck on the side of the road with those "other" Landies. I ended up with a 86 FJ60. Now I'm totally addicted. Not one month after I had it, an OME suspesion found its way on to the rig. I'm already contemplating my next ride... can't decide between a 40, 60 or 80. I guess you all are going to have to help me  . Great board!!

Howdy,

I decided I haven't been wasting enough time on the computer so I thought I'd sign up here too.

I live in the Portland, Oregon area and I have a 1988 FJ62 with a 2000 vortec 5.3L and 4L60E trans. It has a spring over with 35's. It also has an extended range fuel tank. I am currently building a swing-out rear tire carrier and I need to figure out how to build a fan shroud. Anyone got any ideas?

lurking for awhile, new guy. 1973 FJ40 that is a moneypit and that I spend all my time working on. Currently doing a fairly extensive rebuild. I have been active on the LCML for awhile now. Some pics of my rebuild and truck when it actually did something other than sit in my driveway and piss my girlfirend off:

Hey I'm Justin and I've got a 67 fj40 that is in the process of comming out of hybernation again. It is sitting with a TPI injected 350, and a sm465 to the stock transfer. I got it when I was a senior in high school as a rolling good body and put it together but this winter I got sick of carbarators and went tpi. While at it I put an air locker up front moved the lockrite to the rear installed longfields did a spring over on the old man emu spring and a shackle reversal. I'm a little worried about how tall it is but I really needed the frame clearance. I am going to school as an engineer now so time is numbered.

Hi, I'm Simon.
I live in St. Louis, MO. I've had my 76 FJ55 for about 7 years now but haven't realy started doing much with it untill recently other than using it as a daily driver. I put a 4" suspension on it about 2 years ago after my pass. rear leaf broke at the shackle. Since then I did 33x12.50 MTs on black rock crowlers, Scout power steering, rear lock-rite, and am in the process of doing a high compression rebuild. I plan to put TBI on it eventualy. I've got the parts but don't want to expiriment on a fresh rebiuld that hasn't been broken in yet. I also plan on doing the 2x4 rockers since mine are on the verge of non existance, and a custon rear bumper with spare tire carrier and side protection.

Hey,
This is Mike in San Jose, I have had my '67 for the last 8 years. Over the past 4 years I have hardly touch my cruiser because I am always busy doing something else.
Just recently I have decided to reinvest my funds and my interest to keeping my '67 running and may be start doing some off roading with it.
It is pretty much all stock and in beautiful original, rust free, condition. (Minus the bad respary from the original owner many years ago).
What's planned: electronic ignition, brake boosters, 3 points seat belts, a minimal roll cage.
Overall I like to keep my rig as stock as possible, they come perfect, why mess with it.

Been a long time but I'm back. I'm Hunter and I've got a 1970 FJ55 project that I've been putting off for too long. My "Daily Driver" is a '94 FZJ80 with factory lockers, my wife has a '94 as well but without the lockers (I still can't believe I talked into a Cruiser!). I used to have a built '87 FJ60 that I rolled and had to get out of quick do to money issues, and before you ask, yeah you probably saw the video of the roll awhile back. I'm the Founding Fawker of the Austin Lone Star Land Cruiser Chapter and resident President as well. LSLC Texas is a great bunch of heathens so if you get a chance hook up with us. 30 years old married. Live in Vail, CO. No I'm not rich. I work at a Mountain bike/ski shop. Own a rusty Minnesota fj40 that I traded a bike for. I've spent many more hours under it than behind the wheel. I've had it 7 years. Driven 10K. 107k on the OD. I got married in October and bought a new Tacoma put 16K on it already. Installed an ARB bumper and Rhyno liner.
Cruiser is a 78 stock engine. rebuilt trans-t-case. Rear 3rd. New brakes. 4"OME lift. Saginaw steering. 32"bfg's

My name is Robert Langager and I currently live in NC. I am 30 and married and go to NCSU. My first Cruiser is a 1989 FJ62. She is pretty stock except for all of the RUST that she acquired when we lived in MN.

I just bought my second Cruiser this weekend. She is a 1964 that is pretty original with the cool hard top and factory PTO winch.

I am sick about Cruisers. My wife will never understand.:bounce2:

HeyHEY!

My name's Dan Moeller, I'm from Mill Creek, WA (about a half hour north of Seattle for those of you who don't know the area). I came over from the 3FE mailing list, knowing a couple of the guys here from the list.
I'm the proud (and cocky) owner of a US spec 1988 FJ62 with 191K miles, still running strong. 120 amp alternator, "aftermarket" PnP headlight wiring harness (built from Wayne Tangen's design), stock suspension, and a cheesy brush guard up front that doesn't do much more than hold my fog lights.

Looking (hoping, rather) to enlist in the US Air Force soon, and planning on taking my Cruiser with me wherever I go. Hopefully if I can go to Europe I can pick up a few toys for my baby

Suppose I'b best post something here, seeing as I've posted on another thread.

Greg Bowie, from British Columbia. Been into Cruisers, or rather...had the addiction for about 8 years, after taking a 9 week holiday in Oz and NZ. Came back to Canada and started the hunt for a diesel rig. Did not know the next thing about wrenching, and still figure I don't. The learning curve is still steep.

I've got the daily driver red BJ42 in the pics on the Aqualu thread, and I frame off'd it, however the drivetrain is pretty much stock. Aqualu Tub, doors, tailgate, Gozzard windshield frame. Bunch of other things done too. Future plans are 70 series axles, FF rear, cable lock front and rear, 70 series springs all round, maintain SUA, 1HZ-H55F, and 60 series PS. The truck has been down to Moab twice and BHCC once. Working on a BJ60 right now, which will have armor all round, Marks gears inside a rebuild H55f, AXT turbo, and fresh 3B on a 4" Belton suspension, SUA with OTT steering. Not sure about wheels yet. No idea how this one will end up, but I'm thinking SOA at some point.

Oh ya, as for the age thread...I'b be at the...na, I'll post it there.

My baby:
78 FJ40 owned since 1990 My sole daily driver - my goal is to create over time a true daily driver that maintains the 'look' of a relatively stock cruiser that is also quite trail capable (I realize that an extreme truck and a DD are incompatable things)

Major details:
Stock 2f (rebuilt '79 block)
SUA / Shackle reversal / OME
34" Swamper Trxus radials
4 wheel discs
Rear Powertrax No-slip
79 power steering (thanks Butch!!!!)
Warn 8274

Misc: Custom gagues, trailmax seats, mean green alt., dual sealed bat., new bumpers, aqualu tailgate, tuffy, custom stereo, sprayed interior tub, IPF lights, other small mods.

Glad to be part of this board - I'll talk more later and post a pic once I get that red star :D

Hi

I have a 65 cruiser

Motor - 71 F motor
Trany - stock 3 speed
Xfer - stock
Axles - stock 4.10 F/R Rear is welded
Suspension - 4" Skyjacker
Tires - 35" BFG MT KM
winch - stock PTO

mods planed

At this time I have in my possession one good running Chevy 350, and an SM420. The SM420 is adapted to a Dana 18 transfer case with a warn overdrive. I am seriously thinking of replacing all the drive train with this.

Upgrading the axles to 30 spline. I have already acquired the rear axle.

5.29 gearing in the 3rd members. With the tires and the O/D Freeway cruising will be almost stock.

Lockers - would like to go with ARBs

Replace the PTO winch with an electric. The PTO is a monster for doing work, but it sucks for self recovery.

Hello All, My friends call me Mittis. I'm a pilot in the Navy, and I'm currently stationed in San Diego.
I have a 68 FJ40 that I've taken through the Rubicon 8 times as well as various other trails in CA and UT.
I've had my rig for 10 years and for six of those years it was my DD. It has SOA with stock springs and front SR, 350/SM465/NP205, D44 F with true trac, D60 R with true trac, 3.73 gears, GM steering column, painless harness, custom dash with autometer guages. I can't take all the credit, however, since the running gear was set up the way it is now by the PO, and he did a great job!
I've already learned a lot from this board. Thanks to all for the great posts.

Hello Everybody,
I'm Daniel and live in Queens, NY. Originally born in Venezuela where my passion for cruiser started.
At the age of 19 I owned my first 1984 FJ60. Did a lot of mod. on it like a SOA. 3F heads on 2F engine with headers, 3F P.S. Pump.
etc. Then after so many miles got rid of it and bought myself a brand new 1997 FJ70. Did some modiffications on it like a SOA again, but I only enjoyed this beautifull truck for barely two years.
I ended up married in NY with no cruiser at all. I tought I was a grown and established man. NO WAY WITHOUT A CRUISER.
Bought myself a beat up 40, spend hours and money trying to restored, but I failed. I tought it was going to be cheap like back in my country. So I sold the Car, but I wasn't done yet. Looking for a 60. Found my 1986 FJ60 in CT. with only 85,000 miles on it
and very cheap. The interior was impecable, but with some rust because it was abandoned for a couple of years with the previous owner.
Once again went for the SOA and flat springs (I just love it), Rear disc brakes, 37" SSR's but with 4:11 open diff ratio, Custom made rear bumper, steering and one of a kind anti-spring wrap.
Looking forward on swapping my 60 axles into 80's or just spend the money on air lockers with a relation of 4:88 and the Famous Newfields.
Also to swap my steering pump with a GMC one + Adding a longer leaf spring on the rear.
Sometimes I don't belive my self, but I'll see.
Money it's always an isue. The married folks Knows what I'm talking about - right!.

Dan.

I picked up a '76 fj40 bone stock, included the much sought after "extra rust package". I've added a 2 1/2" suspension lift, , rust proofing by thorough sandblast, then coated with spray-on liner inside and out. Black on the inside, and Brittish racing green outside, custom bumpers built by me and coated also. Full array of electrical probs, plus a really fun steering problem.!
I also own a '74 cj5, an'84 mitsubishi montero 2dr., a '98 Dodge/ Cummins, a '96 chevy tahoe, and a '92 VW Jetta just for kicks.
