Ok, here's the deal. You get your choice of vehicle off the
showroom floor.

You're gonna take a trip down the length of Baja. Not a tough trip
but will require a decent 4WD to get the job done. I will run three
polls, one each for Chevy, Toyota, and Jeep.

You pick whether you would pick the new or the old (15 years) vehicle
for your trip.

I personally think a lot of newer vehicles may be more reliable than
those of the past, but I don't really feel they are more durable.
Let's see what you think……

2002 Jeep TJ or 1987 Jeep CJ7 ???

I'd definately go with the 87 Jeep CJ7, but that would be one hell of a find

Do you mean 86? I'd take the 86 over the 2002. Off the showroom floor the 86 is a lot tougher, it might not flex as well but you don't need to worry as much about poking a hole in your gas tank or ripping your steering box off

Probably meant an 86 CJ7. I would choose the old CJ. Higher stance from factory, cooler bodylines. Don't get me wrong, but I do like the newer TJs. Besides, there are a lot less electronics to worry about on an older CJ.

nawwwwwwwww! i would have to disagree with ya's.definatley the tj...
lets compare drivetrain...
AMC 20 - 2 piece axle that strip more the a whore in vegas...
d44- stronger to the point as a 1 piece axle non c-clip the ring gear mey be a bit smaller but from stock to stock d44 gets the award...
tcase's okay ,okay ,okay no comparison:flipoff2:

258 or the 4.0 hmmmmmm two words CARTER CARB hmmmmmm or reliable fuel injection with a distributorless ignition ...:D

T-4 or the T-4 compared to the NV3550 need i compare....:rasta:

stance the cj has it but flex and stock capabilties i honestly think the TODAY'S JEEP would be better

don't get me wrong i am a CJ guy all the way what other freak would buy a 2000 and rip off the front clip and put on a CJ front clip
:D

oh shit i'm sorry i thought i read a 2000 TJ holy shit why even ask that question
thats like saying whose ass would you rather eat CARMINE ELECTRA or molly ringwald:rolleyes:

Don't forget A/C. Some of us are old and decrepit.
But you know, if I could have a base new CJ7 for what it cost in 86, or YJ in 87, and the diference between that and the rubicon to play with, that may change things.
But the Seats, A/C, CD, and coil springs, with Front and rear 44's would still be tempting even then. Andy

I'd go with the 2002 Jeep. Unlike most of the other manufacturers, they've kept fairly in touch with what the wheeler needs, and make a nice vehicle off the floor.

The 86 CJ, while a stout vehicle, still has a lot of room for improvement.. same with the 2002 TJ, so from a mechanical POV, I think it would be a near wash.. now from comfort.. the TJ wins ands down.. I think the coil suspension would help smooth out those bumps a bit better.

Not even that crappy old D300 :D CJ's also have more elbow room. The CJ7 for me.
