: team competition challenge for you Americans!
the frog 04-20-2002, 03:12 AM o.k. so here is the deal:
each year we have here in Israel a 6 comps league for teams
of two vehicles and 5 members each.
the comps are hard and tough and challenging, and i'm telling you you've never seen such an event nor participated in one.
it envolves massive winch use, anchores, ropes, 20lb hammers and has a lot of space for "inventions" like wheel winches(yes, there is such a thing which works like a dream), etc.
now do'nt go flaming me and busting my balls for it,
i'm telling you the truth - it's nothing like what you
do in the states, rockcrawling or otherwise.
this year's league opens on September 2002 and for the
first time we expect European teams to come.
how about having a few American teams in as well?!?!
no need to attend the whole league(which lasts for about 7 months) cause each comp is a separate one and has it's
scoring and winners.
if you want any more details just post or take a look at
the "custom page" of my web site.
so how about some American challenge facing spirit?

can't give you pics right now, but i can give a short explanation:-
a wheel winch is based on someting like an extra wheel rim
attached with bolts to each of the rear wheels, allowing a
strong & light boat rope to get rolled on them.
the rope goes through small shackle like loops welded
to the front bumper on bothe sides.
from there, the rope goes to an anchor stuck in the ground.
when the wheels of the vehicle turn trying to move the
vehicle up the slope, they also turn the extra rims which
"collect" the rope just like a conventional winch would and
pull the vehicle up!!
yes, it needs a lot of practising, but this is without a doubt
the best and most efficient winch, capable of pulling a rig up
allmost a vertical wall.
and it is also one of the cheapest winches - do it yourself,
weld and cut a bit and it's all done.
like it?? so come on, form your team and come to compete
here with us:beer:
Dingo 04-20-2002, 03:53 AM Sounds like something you would see on that TV show "JunkYard Wars".........whatever works though huh.
H8monday 04-20-2002, 03:58 AM I seen a guy using a winch like that many years ago.
It was like a sailbout windlass that was bolted to the rear lugnuts.
His wife was in the driver seat working the throttle. He had about 3 wraps on the drum, and would apply tension to the tailing end of the line to get the line to spool in. If he eased up, on the tail tension, then the line would free spool on the drum. He seemed to have good control of system, and easily winched himself backwards off of a log he was high centered on.
H8monday 04-20-2002, 04:01 AM Frog,
To bad you have already posted what its costing you to come over here and compete in the TTC. There is nooooo way I could afford that kind of $$$$ to ship my junk over to your neighborhood, for a freindly competition.
Sounds like fun though.

Hi there H8,
i guess it's something like that.
the beauty of this winch is in it's simplicity, it's low cost, it's fantastic efficiency, and the fact that you don't have to
have an additional device - no electric, hydraulic or other
power sourced winch.
so how about it H8, am i gonna see ya
here one day?;) ;)

this is not the same situation though.
in my cost evaluation i included some extras which are not
TTC directly related.
besides, the frog is a huge monster and i have to pay
for volume rather than weight.
moreover, i have to fly the mofo because of the timetable, something none of you should.
if you share the cost with the team mates, it's
not such a heavy load.
do'nt forget i bear alone all the TTC cost on my narrow
shoulders.:( :( :(
ALEX Bronco 04-20-2002, 04:44 AM I have seen some of the military Hummers with wheel winches. This same idea can also work on an ATV if the rear axle is not enclose, just a few wraps around the axle and start winching. Brett

Its a program on TLC, the basic idea is 2 or 3 teams go head to head building various things (from 4x4's to boats to hoover crafts, etc). They are timed and have basically a 'Junk Yard' to scrape through and build whatever the competition is for that week.......you see some pretty funny things on there from time to time. You should try and check it out when you are over here.
