: Help with axles.
Drrm80 07-12-2006, 03:47 PM I have a D60 rear and a Dana 44 HD both 8 lugs and i have a real good deal on some 40's but they are for a 15" rim. Can i run a Chevy 15" 8 lug on these axles ? do i have to modify anything or change anything ? any help would be appreciated. Id search if i was able to but i only just joined the forums.
bossman79 07-13-2006, 01:46 AM anything with less than 3.25 back spacing should be all right
94stepsideford 07-13-2006, 05:03 AM I'm running 15's on my d60 and I had to grind a bit of the caliper off (about 1/8 of an inch, not much) and am running 3.5" of BS.
68Broncoholic 07-13-2006, 12:57 PM They will fit the Front D44 fine. If the rear D60 doesn't clear, start grinding.
40's on a D44 isn't a good idea. I always ran 38's on D44 and would break axles all the time (thanks to the detroit locker) so you might look into a HPD60 front axle.
Drrm80 07-13-2006, 01:03 PM 1 more question, did any vehicle come with a factory 15" rim that was 8 lug or is aftermarket the only way i can go ?
Bronco II 07-13-2006, 03:49 PM Summit sells a whole bunch of 15" 8 lug wheels cheap, three pages worth with a bunch of differant back spacings & widths ( http://store.summitracing.com/egnsearch.asp?N=4294923107+4294923105+4294906428+1 15+4294793325 ). National Tire & wheel sell the heavy duty Eatons ( http://www.ntwonline.com/acb/showdetl.cfm?&DID=48&Product_ID=2202&CATID=11 ).
Jrod-13 07-13-2006, 05:37 PM what year are the axles? I'm not sure on the 76-77 axles, but I know the 77.5-79 units use the same big calipers as the 60, so getting 15" rims to fit will be a pain. The rear should slide right over, with discs or stock drums.
76HighBoy 07-14-2006, 03:05 AM I used 15" 8 lug wheels on one of my HP44's , but like Jrod said, it was a pain grinding the dual piston caliper. You can make it work, but I wouldn't do it again.
Drrm80 07-14-2006, 10:59 AM it has HUGE dual piston calipers...ehh i guess ill just stick to the 16.5 inch rim. One last question, I need brakes for the front. Im not too sure of the exact year the axle came out of i just know its a Dana 44 HD 8 lug and the truck was from the 70's that my friend got it out of for me. What would be the best way to get rotors from it, i goto autozone and they ask me all this stuff about the truck that i have no idea about. And would dana 60 rotors fit on it ?
Fordtrucks 07-14-2006, 11:34 AM Dont use a 16.5 inch rim.If you air doun it will loose its bead due to how the rim is made.15s will fit with the right back spacing,if not a lil grinding will do it.OR get 16s but not 16.5s.

Your axle is a Ford F250 & the calipers are dual piston ones right? The 76 - 77 F250 were a low pinion Dana 44HD with dual piston calipers. The 77.5 - 79 F250s were a high pinion Dana 44. The 75 & older F250 Dana 44s were drum braked, so there out of the equation. If your front end is a low pinion Dana 44HD its a 76 - 77, if its a high pinion its a 77.5 - 79. The part numbers I found were different for the 76 - 77 than the part numbers for the 77.5 - 79s. I found that the 76 - 77s rotors part numbers were all by them selves, the part number for the 77.5 rotors ran all the way up to 96 & listed they fit the Dana 60.
NetBSD 07-14-2006, 04:20 PM same problem i have, i got the D44 8 lug front, 14b rear and i have 16.5's and due to the 16.5's missing the bead locks they fall off alot, just look around. i got a killer deal on a set of 16x8 american-racing wheels that will fit with tires mounted
Drrm80 07-16-2006, 09:22 AM well is that the only problem with 16.5 cause i love the prices of the old Humvee tires and 36 - 37 inch tire is fine for me but i want to eventually either beadlock my current rims or pick up some humvee h1 rims with the beadlock and runflat.
