I'm installing a B&M tranny cooler and want to completely bypass the stock cooler in the radiator. From what I've read, the B&M should keep my tranny around 160 which is much cooler than the radiator water. It seems like the radiator tranny cooler would actually heat the ATF since the water running through there is over 200. Let me know if I'm wrong in assuming that. My main question is can I route my engine oil through the old radiator tranny cooler and just use the B&M for the ATF? Would doing so help, hurt or make no difference to my overall cooling? :smokin:

WHere do you live?
Heat is good for a tranny, when your starting up!
Run it to the radiator then the B&M cooler if your in a hot area.

To Mr N, I live in Norcal so it's rarely too hot and never too cold, but I do have some overheating issues when I'm crawling. I probably should have also added that this is a 05 LJ 4.0 w/12Kmi.
To Littleredmule, sure a line could come loose and I could lose my oil. But I could also lose my ATF the same way and be just as stuck.

I would run both coolers for the trans. Through the radiator cooler then the B&M. Especially if the trans is getting hot now.
Engine oil usually does not overheat. You want it to be at least 200. Have you checked engine oil temp? Even a Raytek on the pan?
I removed my oil cooler on my car after eating a bearing and rebuilding. I noticed no significant oil temp rise. Maybe 10 degrees. This was on a turbo street car. Different application, but I was expecting the oil temp to rise a lot more. Temp sensor in the pan.
Bottom line, the trans needs to be kept as cool as possible. What temp do you consider overheating?
Engine oil gets cooled all the time when it splashes around the water cooled block, or at least that was my conclusion.
Some food for thought

The thermostatically controlled, fan cooled one?

I run one just to the tranny. No problem for 3yrs. That way if the engine overheats i don't loose my tranny too.

The tranny lines run through the coolest part of the radiator, the lower part in a TJ. Which on a hot day runs around 145-160 degrees…
