Ok friend is looking into a 2.5 engine for his buggy.
I've found a 2.5 but the stock tranny is toast, and if I remeber my 90 YJ with the 2.5 not very strong.

SO...

WHat tranny can I fit behind this?

Any way to make a SM420/465, NP 435, T18/19 fit?

They need to fix that option!

Want to stay away from the AX15, too long.

Edit -> Can anyone expand on this? "You can use an SM420, with a bellhousing from an S10." - jpnjim

Thanks, but trying to stay shorter.

Ok I've found, is thie correct?
To use with current 2.5L:
Can use a S-10 (blazer or pick up) or camero/firebird bellhousing for a GM 2.8L, Pre 1988/89 (S10 4 cylinder shares the bellhousing bolt pattern with the Jeep 2.5L and every 60degree chevy V6)
Mount CPS on bellhousing
Gear reduction starter (like mean green) to clear bellhousing

"the s10 bellhousing fits the amc
this guy used and s10 bh to adapt an sm420" - kidwired

He points to a dead link: http://home.off-road.com/~moulton/smswap.htm
"The bell housing used for this swap is the bell housing from an 1986 Chevy S-10 with a 2.8 V6 and a five speed. The hydraulic slave cylinder, pressure plate, throwout bearing, clutch release fork, and fork pivot ball from the S-10 are also used. The clutch disk to use is from a 83 Jeep CJ-7 with a 4 cyl engine. The original pilot bushing from the YJ can be used." but thats the GM Iron DUke for teh 83, no?

From Wikipedia
The 2.5 L inline-4 was a shortened version of the 258 bored to 3.88 in (99 mm) and de-stroked to 3.19 in (81 mm). The block is basically the same as the 258 with a larger bore and the two center cylinders removed. The head featured a new combustion chamber and port design which was later used on the 4.0L -- the 2.5L I-4 head was stretched by two cylinders in the center. Instead of the standard AMC bell housing bolt pattern, AMC/Jeep engineers adopted the GM small V-6 and four cylinder bolt pattern for their new engine. This was apparently a money/parts saving initiative since AMC bought the 2.8L V-6 from GM in 1984 until the 4.0L I-6 was introduced in 1987. Both the four and V-6 shared the same drivetrain components, whereas stronger transmissions were needed for the 4.0L.

The AMC I-4 appeared in 1984 with the new XJ Cherokee and was produced through 2002 for the Jeep Wrangler and Dodge Dakota pickup, which used the AMC/Jeep designed four since 1996. Output that final year was 120 hp (89 kW) at 5400 RPM and 145 ft·lbff (197 N·m) at 3250 RPM.

This engine was used in the following vehicles:

1984-1986 Jeep CJ-7
1984-1985 AMC Eagle
1984-2000 Jeep Cherokee
1987-2002 Jeep Wrangler (YJ and TJ)
1988-1989 Eagle Premier
1996-2001 Dodge Dakota

Looks like this, no? (edit: just the bolt pattern)

if you've got the fab skills to fab up motor mounts...

Push the 2.5 forward, you've got about 8 inches!

Just an opinion, but for a project like this, information can save you a lot of time and money. If your time was only worth $1 an hour, it would pay for itself to get a star and be able to search.

Use the stock tranny and keep it simple and light, it's short, light, and can take some abuse if you have a well balanced vehicle. I've been beating the shit out of mine for about 6 years without any breakage. 4000 LB Yj, with 2.5 moved forward 7", stock tranny, Klune V, to stock transfer case with 32 spline output shaft, dana 44s with 5.38s and 37" mtrs. Cool, settup, did you move it forward for the klune or for better rear d/s angle?

Eventually down the road i was thinking about dual cases and pushing the engine forward..
