i'm putting a taurus fan in my trooper and I'm trying to find the simplist way to wire it. All i'm looking for is a simple on/off switch for it. I've got a one speed fan, 30 amp relay, 12ga wire, switch, is that all i will need or do i need to go bigger? i'm looking simple but reliable as well, not trying to burn my truck :smokin: Also whats the best way to mount it to the radiator? i was thinking of using zip ties or long #8 screws through the radiator, is that to ghetto?

Thanks,
Eric

wire it up with the stuff you got, zip tie it on, flip thwe switch and watch your temp lower

You'll want to mount it more securely than through the core fins. I'd find a way to mount it to the top/bottom/sides of the radiator structure, or get some tabs welded/brazed/epoxied/??? to the radiator tanks to hold it.

You'll also need a bigger relay, and may need bigger wire than 12ga, but I'm not 100% sure on the wire size.

Assuming it's the big Taurus fan, it'll pull as much as 80 amps on startup, which will fry a 30A relay pretty quickly.

I used a continuous duty trailer isolator solenoid (looks like a starter solenoid, but it's continuous duty, 'bout $12-20 at your local trailer-repair place) and 8 or 10 gauge wire on mine; it's wired to a thermostat switch embedded in the radiator, but you can wire it to any normal switch layout you like.

It can be as simple or complicated as you make it. Here's a pretty good discussion on different wiring options, which relay(s) work well, which ones burn up, etc a few wiring diagrams thrown in also. Wiring a temperature switch in will be a set it and forget it deal. If you wire it straight with the switch and relay, you'll have to remember to turn it on and off when you need it.

Use a standard bosch relay...( I do and carry a spare..just in case )..12 gauge wire is fine if each wire run is a short distance..ie under 8 feet or so. ( you only need the 12 gauge to run from the battery to the relay and to the fan and the relay..smaller gauge is fine to run to your switch)..I have one relay wired to the high speed and the ignition switch..and relay wire to the low speed and a toggle switch to let it run with the engine off...Works great for me!

Don`t attach the fan to your radiator. Running anything through the fins will wear on them eventually and cause a leak, it happened to me. I made some simple brackets that attached to my grill/core support from 1" x 1/8" aluminum strap. The stuff is easy to bend, and more than enough to support the fairly light Taurus fan. When I installed my Taurus fan, I was doing it as a temp. setup to see if it was going to solve my cooling problems. I went to the wrecking yard and pulled the stock relays and wired them to a three position switch, High/Off/Low just to see if the fan was going to work for me. It does, so I ordered a DC controller to wire it up right. That will eliminate the relays and allow the fan to run as needed so I don`t have to worry about it.

Thanks for the help so far. I think i'm going to pick up that 75amp bosch relay today. i've been reading the links posted and have 2 more questions. i saw where you put a diode on it? can anyone enlighten me more on this and how that is wired in. Also do i need a fuse and if so what size and where do i put it. Sorry if these are dumb questions but i'm clueless on electronics.

Thanks
Eric

Eric, we carry a 70 amp relay kit for this. Call me and we can get you set up.

I used H2O heater straps.

I used 2x4s to hold the fan at the correct height, then drilled holes in the plastic with bolts attaching it to the straps, then straps to the radiator mounts. (make sure you do all 4 corners).

Is it me, or do those Bosch relays seem small?

This is for a TJ but is still a great write up: http://www.creeperjeepers.org/Electric%20fan%20install%20in%20a%202.5L%20TJ.html

Here is how I'll be wiring mine. With the toggle in the low position, the fan will come on automatically as needed(determined by a thermo switch) With the toggle in high, the fan runs on high, and off it is completely disabled. The lights tell you what speed the fan is running in(not really necessary) It's not on the diagram, but I would also fuse the power lead going to the switch.

Nice diagram misterfubar. One question, when the high speed of the fan is running the low speed circuit is completely disabled right? If thats the case this is probably the way ill be wiring mine up. Any chance you could throw up a diagram using 2 - 30A amp relays instead of the one 75A on the high speed?

When wired by that diagram the low speed is completely disabled when you have the switch in high. I could draw up another diagram, but it would be exactly the same thing, except where it says 75A on the high relay it would say 30A.

I was talking about using two (2) 30 amp relays wired in parallel for the high side an a single 30 amp for the low side. That was the diagram i was looking for. Thanks for the answer to the other question btw.
