I have a ford 2wd t-18 with the low first gear. That i dont want to buy an daptor for it. I also can buy a t-18 that was in a jeep cj that is already attached to a dana 20 but it doesnt have the really low first gear. so can i take the first gear out of the ford and put it into the jeep trans? thanks for the input.

I thought the Jeep T-18 was like 6.XX and the Ford T18 was only 4.XX in first??

Novak has many answears for you.

I would think it'd be easier to take the output and adapter from the jeep and swap it into the 2wd ford, kinda like what they sell the adapter kit for.

Look at the novak link KiGrind provided.

Yes you can swap the Ford internals over to the Jeep case. Check with www.partsmike.com he's got a lot of knowledge about what you can and can't do with T18's.

You can also swap the main shaft and adapter plate from the Jeep tranny to the Ford tranny. You just have to drill and tap the holes in the rear of the case. Easy :D (Oops, as JohnnyJ posted).

You could also try to find an IH close-ratio T18, it might be cheaper than the Jeep one. Either way, they're both paper weights so don't pay too much :D

Either way involves a complete teardown of both trannies. You have to swap the entire main shaft/gear cluster and the counter shaft.

If you're going to remain pure Jeep, ie: engine family, I'd swap the internals from the Ford into the Jeep. It's the easy way out and also the least expensive. I considered doing this as I had the Jeep T18 with the 4.03 1st gear in my 76 CJ5, but decided to go Ford Power and in that case it's easier to use all the Ford stuff (engine, bellhousing, clutch, starter, tranny). I ended up gutting the Jeep T18 for the mainshaft and tossing the rest in the dumpster.
