For all you flare experts, out there... :D

On my '92 YJ, I need to trim and put on new flares. Just installed 35's and now have a little rub. Rear only. I'm allready lifted with 4.5, shackels and BL. Still just a little tight.

My question is which flares works best, cause I honestly don't know the difference between them all. Is there any difference? What I've looked at so far are the Xenno flares for YJ... 6.5" wide, Xenon TJ flares... 6" wide, and then I hear most people talk of just installing regular TJ flares. Are they not as wide? I also know there are other brands out there, too. Whats the differnece between them all???

Is it simply a custom trim/fit deal with ANY flare, or do some just replace the stock flare and stick out farther with out giving you more tire well clearance?

I'm confussed. :D lol.

Any help, mucho appriciated.

Flares aren't gonna get you more wheel well clearance if you are hitting the fender, only if you're hitting the flare. Wider flares will allow the tire to travel up inside without touching, but you may still bottom out on the the fender. Longer bumpstops , more lift, or different fenders would be my suggestion.

Cut a larger radius opening in the rear fender before installing the flare…

X2!

I have stock TJ sport flares, they stick out a little farther than stock YJ flares, and I'll admit that they don't cover my 33/12.50/R15's on 15/8 with 3.75 BS, so i am a legal violation...

BUT they do give tonnes of room for my 33's to stuff into the well without rubbing, Guys with teh same lift and 33's with stock YJ flares rub when articulating,

I'd recomend Stock Rubicon flares,

I'm kinda partial to my brushwacker knock offs. $200 off ebay. Yes....ppl will tell you they tear off on the trail. Those ppl have their wheels inside the flares. Mine stick outside the flare by a couple inches. Never had one "tear off." I like em. BTW...those are 37x14.5's.

Do the TJ flares. You can pick up a set a lot cheaper than the bushwhackers and achieve the same result. Trimming is necessary, otherwise, you're not gaining any clearance.

Some flares are made from fiberglass, too fragile for trail use. Some are ABS, its tough but will break if pressed up against a rock or tree. I've had good luck with Warn TJ flares. They are made from urethane, very flexible, and have stood up to lots of trail abuse. I did mount them with 1" stainless washers to keep the hardware from pulling through the flare.

Now, about tire rubbage. You don't mention where you are rubbing. Flares will not help the front of the rear wheel well, there is no extra to trim unless you cut into the tub. My solution was to move the axle back. TJ Flares combined with a rockcrawler hood and minimal uptravel is good enough to run 40's with a 4" lift...

I just installed a set of bushwacker flares on my cj7, they look the best imo. They also alow you to trim your fenders if you want even has a diagram....also the cj flares fit yj's....i looked on the inside of my flare, it has 2 part numbers, one set with cj at the end and another with yj at the end. So they will fit either.

...
Its @ the rear of the well. As the the axle moves up, the shackel moves back, so the tire hits more to the rear.

Looks like I'll need some longer bump stops AND do some trimming...

thanks
