About 12 years ago I started A project to mate 2 transmissions together.Im itching to get back on it and other things are out of the way now.I made adapter plates and modified the 5 speed output and 4 speed input shafts. Now im being told that wont work, what I needed to do is make new shafts from scratch. The reason being they need to be re heat treated and that will distort them too much.Im A machinist, but dont do heat treating. The question is,will it work or not.If necessary,I can make new shafts or have new shafts made.Oh ya,were talking about an IH T-34 and BW T-98.

I don't understand why re heat treating them would distort them? How did the factory make them in the first place?

Some heat treaters dont know what their doing. That was dutchman's excuse for my shafts taking 8 weeks:shaking:

When building the shafts originally, material was left on to be ground off after heat treat.Im told some materails distort more than others. Also, some processes are better than others.I guess Im looking for A company that can do it without distorting them. This will give me some serious crawl ratios.90 to 1,103 to 1,109 to 1,187 to 1,376 to 1,depending what combination I choose.I actually made up A chart.
Give 66CJDean on the board a buzz. Thats what he does for a living.

I had a strange trans combo in my 1955 Pontiac. I broke the trans several times, including once having broken a single tooth off the input shaft. I couldn't find an input to match except for one that was too long so I had it shortened on a lathe. No heat treat was done, just cut it down an inch or so. This portion did not fail(the trans case ultimately ripped apart). What mods did you do to the shaft(s) that require the heat treat?

Shortened the 5 speed output, drilled bored and internal splined.Shortened the 4 speed input and external splined to fit inside the 5 speed output.(1-1/4 10 spline).Doing this exposed soft metal under the case hardening. The total thickness between cases is 2 1/8 inches. So the shafts are pretty stubby now.

Ok, I got the info on this from Performance Cryogenics in Lincoln,CA.I was told to send it to Edwards Heat Treating in San Leandro,CA.Have it case hardened and nothing else needs to be done.He said we are not making injectors for the Space Shuttle here. The way it was explained is that case hardening doesnt go deep enough to tweak it very much at all.Have the shafts case hardened and put them back together(too easy).I just wanted to make sure though. Thanks everyone for the help.
