Hey...this is pissing me off and need a question answered.

My CJ has the AMC20 with the Moser one-piece axles in it and I'm replacing the bearings and seals. Well the PO did a shitty job with everything and pretty much fused the bearings and 'bearing retainer ring' to the axle shaft. I had to cut them off--I could NOT press them off.

So anyway, I need new 'bearing retainer rings'. My question--as stupid as it may seem--is do I really need them? I don't see any real purpose in their use here--the bearing is pressed on and the brake backing plate holds the whole assembly in place. The retaining ring doesn't seem to have a preload or hold anything in place. Or does it?

Anyone?

The bearing retainer rings are generaly always brokeor cut off. They are not ment to be re-used. When you buy bearings, they should come with new retainers. The retainer ring is there to make sure the bearing doesnt want to come off if it gets hot or the like (as the bearing will expand as it gets warm). Its basically extra insurance, sinc the bearing retaining plate holds the axle is, so if the bearing slides in, the tire comes out. I would put them on, its an extra 10 bucks or so that is worth it.
