: SBC big flywheel

Hey guys,

I'm in the middle of swapping an NV4500 into a SBC 40 series. The motor is out of a 1969 Chevelle and it has a 153 tooth flywheel. I dont do mud (I hate cleaning up), mainly rockcrawling stuff. Now, I want to run a 168 tooth flywheel in place of my original flywheel.

Are these the 40 lbs units? Or are there 30 lbs 168 tooth flywheels too? Where can I get a big flywheel? Someone here has one he wants to sell?

I got a 168 tooth flywheel when I bought the tranny, but it has the newer crankshaft bolt pattern (off a 1993 K1500 Chevy truck, I think) so it won't fit my 1969 motor. Can I have a shop just weld and redrill the 168 tooth flywheel I got? It seems to have a counterweight off one side but I figure it can be machined off.

heres some more, didn't read it all though.

looks like you should stay w/your current fly and add an inertia ring if you need more weight.:smokin:

Thanks for the replies. The previous posts don't really say if 168 tooth flywheels = 40 lbs. units. If I buy a 168 tooth FW, is it automatically the heavier one, or is it just a different tooth count?

I don't really mind an inertia ring if it's not too expensive, but I haven't seen or heard of one for a SBC.

So it sounds like the larger flywheel only helps a little huh?

:cool2: Thanks! I'll try the junkyard first for 40 lbs ones. I'm feeling cheap after paying $$$ for the clutch and press. plate.
