Bought 85 4x4 mini truck axles.
Is an 8" ring gear what comes in the 4cly axle?
What application would have the 7" stuff?
Any links to websites with identification info would be great.

Pretty sure it wears 8" front and rear. Correct me if I'm wrong someone but the LC, and v6 third members will also interchange. The identifier between the four cylinder and v6's is the six has more ribs.

Ya, the mini truck (or Hilux, as I know it) uses 8" rings front and back. The third member is removable and is the same unit front and back... What this equates to is the front diff isn't optimised and the pinion is on the coast side. For lots of high load wheeling it would be recomended to fit the third member from a 90-96 Land Cruiser which will net you a dedicated front diff and a high pinion to boot.

All Toyota SA diffs are technically 8". The thirds are generally interchangeable with minor modifications to the housings. 7.5" rings are for IFS only (86-newer). 4 cyl cases are the weakest with smaller bearings, V6 cases are most sought after as they have larger bearings and less deflection in the case itself as to the above mentioned "ribs", a more stout case. I believe the Tacoma TRD cases have braces that attach to the bearing caps to reduce more deflection.

Although the diffs are interchangeable, that doesn't mean the gears are interchangeable. There is more detail in the FAQ.
