: Drilling a flat top D44?

I have a D44 with the flat top knuckles. I want to put cross over steering on my rig and was told I can get the passanger side knuckle drilled and machined to accept a stering arm.
Will the knuckle become weak or any other ill effects?
What is the best way to do this or have it done? Is there a certin depth it needs to be?
I know studs need to be put in the knuckle, cone washers and the arm, is there anything else?
Anyone have a good how on it?

Thanks

There are vendors here on pirate that can do it for you. This isn`t something you can do at home, unless you own and can operate a vertical mill.

I had my local machine shop mill the top flat, then I made a simple jig to hold it in the drill press. Worked out pretty good, and only cost 15$ for the machining.

It worked great for me at home, nothing but a drill press and lots of clamps. Granted its not PERFECTLY vertical as a mill would be, but its damn close. Just take your time. I bougt all me bits and taps from Napa, but would buy them somwhere else a second time. On mine, I belive the holes went all the way through the knuckle. But it was 3 years ago I cant rembers exactly. I just went to d60's after spending bank on stuff that kept breaking.

Explain this jig.

basically just a peice of angle iron and some flat stock with a few holes in it that bolted to the spindle mounting surface and then was clamped to the drill press table. Then I just rotated the table to get the top perpindicular with the bit and drill away.

yeah for all that work it is definately something i would just have done. you are only talking like 60$ to have one milled and tapped. it would cost more than that in bits and taps to do this job. HAVE IT DONE!!!!

But now I have a set of sweet bits and taps that cost around 50 bucks! If I was so inclined, I could go put another set on someones elses rig. I always go buy all the tools and do the work myself. Thats probably why I work at a large independent repair shop... Mabye. And you were saying 60 bucks a side? dang. What happens when you have like 3 sets of axles to put high steer arms on? A very large machine shop bill thats what. 60 bucks x 6 flat tops = 360 bucks that I'd rather do myself. my .2
