Sawtooth National Recreation Area Alert

The House Resources Committee is slated to consider legislation that would limit access for OHV recreation in central Idaho. H.R. 3603, sponsored by Rep. Mike Simpson, R-ID, would designate more than 300,000 acres of the Sawtooth National Recreation Area as a wilderness area, thus closing what has been an area of multiple use management to limit access and recreation use.

Numerous recreation groups in Idaho are opposed to this legislation, including the Idaho Recreation Council! We are asking you to join with them in requesting that the House Resources Committee not approve this legislation unless it undergoes major revision.

Timing is critical because this legislation is on the committee’s agenda for the week of July 24th. Your Representative is a member of the House Resources Committee. Please contact your member NOW!

The House Resources Committee will soon consider H.R. 3603, The Central Idaho Economic Development and Recreation Act (CIEDRA). Despite the title of this measure, this bill is bad news for a variety of recreation interests. In fact, the Idaho Recreation Council is strongly opposed to the bill.

H.R. 3603 would authorize the sale of public land for real estate development and it would designate as wilderness more than 300,000 acres of the Sawtooth National Recreation Area. If this legislation becomes law, OHV recreation in this part of central Idaho would be seriously affected.
