Maybe yes maybe no!

If it is really a Scout and not a Travelall, then the axles have been swapped in, standard pattern for a Scout was 5 on 5.5". There is a very rare 4 lug pattern, but no stock 8 lug patterns on a Scout. Since the axles have been swapped in it's anyone's guess. Also, stock Scout axles are Dana, not corperate IH, so no worries.

look for a bill of material number on the axle tube, that could point ya in the right direction on finding out what the axle is. Then pull up the dana/spicer site and find out if it's listed there......

If it has 6 studs holding the axles in place,it is from an IH vehicle.Probably either 3/4 or 1 ton.Chevy,Dodge and Ford have 8 studs.Look on the lower right corner of the diff cover. My Dana 70 has the #70 right there in the casting.Ive also seen 44 and 60 models marked this way:p .If so and it was done right, its A good thing.

Mountainguy,

He said it has 8 lugs. If it had 6 lugs my bet would be for GM. It's a Scout though so who knows.

Nasrope,

Does it have external or internal hubs? If you don't know what that means search. :flipoff2:

I think he is talking about the rear and the full floating axle. If it has 6 bolts retaining the axle it is most likely an IH --- if it has 8 bolts it from the big 3...

He never said 6 lugs vs. 8 lug.... But he did say studs... When he should have said bolts.

What he means is that if the rear is full float then the shaft flaunge(sp) will have 6 bolts going to the hub if it is an IH rear and 8 for ford/chev/dodge rears. also external hubs on the front might be and indication that it is an IH front.

Nasrope,

Why don't you post a picture of the rig in question. And good pics of the axles (front and rear, mulitiply points of view).

This is one of those "pictures says a 1000 words" things.

OK,I guess I wasnt clear enough.Yes I was talking about the rear full floater, and IH does use studs to secure the axle to the hub.The other guys use bolts.

Also the Gibbs International dealership in Fresno,CA has been good about telling me what was on the rig originally. They call back east and have them check the archives, then call back(usually the next day.All you need is the VIN.

Not all the time..... I pulled a 65" D60 from a '78 Dodge W250 and the ff shafts were retained with 8 studs. Yep...studs.... the holes in the axle shafts were tapered and there were cone washers on the studs. Some of them were missing and I ended up finding new cone washers at the local Ford dealership, so some Ford axles must use studs also.

I've seen studs on many Ford, Dodge, and IHC D60/D70 FF rears.
