It's not a spool....if it were, it would be one solid piece.
I believe that's Ford's version of their open differential.

the tag that was caked on the centersection reads 3L50 from my understanding the L stands for locker of some sort. also i bought it from a friend that was parting out the 77 f150 did a burn out in the truck and left 2 25 ft long black marks.

No...Since it is so easy to swap Ford 9's (swapping 3rds....not necessarily gearsets) somebody may have swapped 3rd members and disregarded the tag.

take a picture from the backside of the ring gear, thats the easiest way to tell a trackloc from a open carrier

How many spider gears are in it? 4 or 2, could be a track lock. I just got rid of one, look inside the middle, is there something that looks like a little cube? If so, its a 4pinion track lock

You need to look at the ring gear side. The L on the tag means limited slip, not locker. The picture shows open on the left, LS on the right.

Oh by the way, Through my research.. make sure its not a 9 3/8" housing.. got screwed on one of those before.. The 4pinion track locks were found in alot of those.. NO GEARS! But the Carrier is good for 9" gears.
Post some more pics of the entire housing and the backside of the carrier as stated by quick and dirty

5/8 head on the ring gear bolts on a LS rather than 3/4 for open diff.
