: TBI that won't run!!!!
TK174 07-19-2006, 08:29 PM I put a 1989 TBI unit on my buggy a bought the adapter from Howell EFI. So i'm running older heads and intake. It will start but the idel goes from 1000 to 600 and then dies. I can't even set the timing. It has no throttle response eather. I have the stock wiring harnes. New knock senson. need help.
thanks tk174
Tim84K10 07-19-2006, 09:26 PM Is your oil pressure switch closing? You'll only get a slight spirt of fuel if it doesn't.
TK174 07-19-2006, 09:31 PM Yes I'm getting power to the pump when it does run.
TK174 07-19-2006, 09:33 PM i have the air cleaner off. Is't not running out of fuel.
Tim84K10 07-19-2006, 10:56 PM Spark?
TK174 07-20-2006, 09:03 AM yes it has spark
Krylon.. 07-20-2006, 09:15 AM Have a multi-meter? Try sticking it ont he oil pressure switch on the back of the manifold. See if the voltage is dropping before it shuts off.
Are the injectors firing all the way up til it dies?
And does it have the factory map sensor? Is the vacuum line connected to it? My 89 used to die at lights if my vacuum line fell off..(happened often)..
TK174 07-20-2006, 09:27 AM it is not nunning out of fuel the only vacume line that is off is the one to the
EGR valve .
Tim84K10 07-20-2006, 11:20 AM So if you shoot starting fluid into it, it'll run?
Krylon.. 07-20-2006, 11:39 AM if the fuel is still flowing and it has spark.... Have you tried keeping it running by feathering the throttle inside the cab or with your hand by the throttle linkage?
Another possibility would be a bad IAC... Do you have a check engine light?
And is it the stock TPS and is it adjustable?
JonsYJjeep 07-20-2006, 11:56 AM I have a TBI set-up on my jeep. My TPS seems to be the only thing that gives me trouble. I would check there first. Because if it's starting , you got spark, you got fuel, it just wont idle. (correctly)
The TPS is somewhat adjustable. You should be able to loosen the screws holding it in and slightly turn the TPS. Try this and see if it still does it.
Next check would be the vacume line to the MAP sensor.
florida4x4 07-20-2006, 12:30 PM I have a bunch of parts to do this conversion but never have found the motivation to get on it. So now that I have the disclaimer out of the way you should check all the grounds, MAP sensor, IAC, and VSS. The VSS is really important and a lot of people try to bypass it...

Mine seems to run okay without it, but I'm going to fix it anyway (speedo cable is broken).

What year TBI's used VSS?
I have never had one hooked up to my TBI.
My motor runs a little rich but otherwise fine.
florida4x4 07-20-2006, 12:49 PM every GM efi has a VSS IIRC. It is really important for idle control especially when decelerating.
Another thing you should be sure of is the you have the right eprom for the engine.
TK174 07-20-2006, 12:57 PM the TPS is non adjustable the book said i need 5.0 volts .I have 4.43 volts is the TPS bad?? What is eproms??

All TBI applications use a VSS. it is necessary for several functions, some things don't turn on until a certain speed.
KILLER"B"3 07-20-2006, 03:15 PM you did the swap make sure the power to the pump is on in both run and start with the key. If it is wired to start then loses power in run it runs out of gas. just my .02

yep there's a possibility
TK174 07-22-2006, 08:28 AM yes the power is on when in (run) and (start) position. BUT i only have 3.5 lb of fuel pressure at the tank. can this be the problem??????????????

Yes, you need 9-13. FP regulator or fuel pump is bad.
