Hey, I am just about finishing the install of my 1.6 into my sammi. I ordered a trail tough kit including chopping my wiring harness. What my problem is is that i can get the engine started bud it runs so horribly bad. It stumbles and shakes like a bastard as if it is not running on all cylinders. I set the timing but as it idles it is all over the place from 0-15 degrees. And the thing that baffels me the most is when i give it throttle it has no effect! I cant do anything. I have about 90 % of the vaccume lines hooked up but i dont know where the rest go. Is there some sort of a schematic for it i could find on the internet? Because if i can figure this out it might solve all my problems, well hopefully. Oh yea its a 1993 obd1 16 valve. Any comments would be most appreciated.

Just a thought, remember that the 16v engine distributor turns backwards, so double check your firing order in the proper direction.

awesome thats the picture I need! But is there by chance a bigger version you can send me as I cant read what anything is when I enlarge it. As of the firing order it is right because I have a haynes manual and I did it in the order they have it listed and I also tried mixing them around, but it only makes it worse. My other idea that I had was that when I bought this motor there was no coil for it so i picked one up at the auto wrecker. Is there by chance a difference in years maybe producing a weak spark??? :D Thanks a bunch

just a thought what fuel pump did u use? when mine went bad it wasnt putting out enough psi and it did the same thing. that was on my stock 91 with 1.3 and efi

Im using the trail tough pump they supplied me with. Im not sure if it just me but it sure is loud. It almost overcomes the sound of my motor! But I pulled the fuel line off from the fuel rail and it is pumping out the fuel like mad so I know there is not a flow problem but pressure might be the issue.

i'd look into the vac lines then, my 88 would never run right till i replaced all the vac lines, just a thought go to a local pick a part with ur same engine and note where all vac lines go. i had to do that for mine after the sticker got washed off going through a river

Loose or misadjusted throttle position sensor maybe?

Ah man I have just about had it i have all the vaccume lines hooked up proprolly checked all the sensors, set the timing and tps, new plugs, new wires, lots of fuel pressure, the engine was just rebuilt before it was put in so I know the valves are set and head gasket/ valve seats are good. My next step is the computer or injectors. I guess I will be looking for one or sending it away to get checked out because I am stummped and cant figure out what the hell it is. Its like it is running only on 2 cylinders but when you give it throttle it studders and wont rev up but instead just coughs and will die.

You are absolutely positive you don't have the distributer 180° off? Positive?

Does it run any different if you spray starter fluid in the throttle body?
(btw, I've discovered they will run on WD40 too:laughing: )

well I will try the wd 40 thing and recheck the distributor tonight after work and I will see if it is a fuel problem. I was wondering how do you check codes on these engines after trail tough has chopped them off. Is there a spot where you can ground out two wires like on the stock harness?

How long did the motor sit before it was installed?
I installed a 1.6 8v with a trail tough kit and harness. I had it all wired up properly and it stil ran like garbage. Timing was correct and all wires and vac lines in place. Turns out the throttle body was very dirty and needed cleaning.
I took off the injector and soaked it in seafoam and ran 2 pints of seafoam throught the injector and the tank and this solved my problem. My motor sat for an unknown amount of time, possibly several years as the motor had only 32,000 miles on it.
As part of this process I would make sure that the fuelsystem is clean and flows properly.

Hey Banjoman. What is that seafoam stuff your talking about? Im a newbie and that went way over my head. Is it like b12 carb cleaner or something?

I have been reading through my manual and it is a haynes so it is pretty generic. For anyone who has done a timing belt on one of these motors do you set the timing mark on the camshaft to the E mark or the I mark? As there are 2 marks and I am confused. I read the manual and it says the E but that doesnt make sense to me. As when it is on I the valves are seated and on E they are not. Any help apreciated.

Is the Hanes manual for the 1.6 motors, backwards like it is for the 1.3?
Beware, the Hanes is fawked and it shows the timing set up opposite of what it is supposed to, for the 1.3 motors.

Thanks Banjoman. I will try some of that. When we have a stuck motor in a tractor we pour b12 down into the cylinders to help break the motor loose. I will try this and see how it works.

Well I pulled the valve cover off and was watching the valve timing and figured out that the distributor was 180 out :shaking: F*ck haynes manuals seriously :flipoff2: you guys were right they had the timing wrong. So i turned the distributor an vrooom. Daily driven her now and it sure rips. Huge increase in power, and runs so smooth on the off camber stuff (oh the joy of fuel injection). So thanks for all of the help from you guys.
