will a early 4L80E, from a 90-something whatever that had a 350 or a 454 in front of it work with a newer LS variant motor? A friend is going to sell me one that I someday plan on using in front of my 5.3. I got to thinking that the later LS motors wont bolt up to the older transmissions, and it got me wonderin if I will have the same problem.

The 4L80E and 4l85E is used with the 6.0L in the newer trucks, to use it on a 5.3 you need a crank spacer or the correct torque converter.
I would stick to the 60E if your keeping a stock 5.3 the 80 will eatup alot of is power. Or swap to a 6.0L at the same time. You can find a longblock 6.0L cheap The new blocks are only 600 bucks! Just swap everything off your 5.3 (intake, oil pan, etc., onto the 6.0L.

you can bolt an early 4l80e with the older chevy style bolt pattern to an ls motor. you will have to cut one of the bolt holes on the aluminum tranny case. if you want more details on this "cutting ear procedure" call scoggin dickey tech department, they will walk you through the procedure. this is good for up to 500 ponies. i'm not sure that it will work the other way around. the best way to do it is to take your existing early 4l80e to a tranny shop and tell them you want to swap the case for an later moder style ls case. don't pay more than 150 for the case, the labor to swap your tranny internals to the new ls case depends on the shop you take it to.
i would not put any money into the 4l60e. i have gone thru three of them, the last one was supposed to be built up, i got it from art carr. although it's holding still, i give it another 5 to 10 miles before my big block tears it to pieces. my tranny's lasted on average between 10 to 27k miles. this is the only reason why i'm switching to the sm465. i can't afford the 3000 right now for a fully built 4l80e.
