: jd2 stand using receiver hitch pics?
M.Martian 04-21-2002, 08:48 PM My JD2 model 3 just arrived a couple days ago and now it's time to figure out how I'm going to build the stand for it. I only have a single car garage so mounting it into the slab in the garage won't leave me with too much room to actually work. My second option is to put some threaded sleaves into the driveway itself.
I recently read about someone making a stand which uses their receiver on their truck as the anchor point. I've already searched but couldn't find any more info about it. Does anyone have any more info on this? Pics would be great.
Will a 2x2 tube be strong enough to take the force of bending without hydraulics? What size tubing should be used for the vertical tube? I was thinking about using a two piece design with square tubing so that I could rotate it in 90* increments for a little more versatility.
If possible I'd like to use my truck as an anchor instead of bolting it to the driveway. This way I'm not limited to doing all of the bending at my house.
Flatty 04-21-2002, 09:06 PM I did this with my JD2 bender. I got 2x2 box and made the mount, then got another piece to go into the receiiver hitch on my truck. For the JD2 bender itself, I had a piece of 3/8" plate and bolted it to that. It workde out great. The only problem is the bender moves a bit on the back of the truck.

71RCKCRZR RYAN 04-21-2002, 09:06 PM I HAVE A STAND USING A PIECE OF 120 WALL 2X2 .....WITH A FLANGE AT THE BOTTOM WITH FOUR HOLES. I THEN HAVE A PIECE OF 1/2" PLATE BOLTED TO MY GARAGE FLOOR WITH THREADED HOLES FOR THE STAND.I CAN PULL THE BENDER DOWN ANYTIME AND ONLY HAVE A PIECE OF 1/2" IN MY WAY
crashinaz 04-22-2002, 09:17 AM Here ya go... We moved it away from the truck quite a bit and made the legs out of torsion bars laying around from one of the SAS we'd done in the past... Whipped it together in, oh... 10 or fifteen mintues and it works pretty descent... Don't mind the caption... That pic was taken shortly after a little motocross incident I'd had... :D

we made a setup to go into the reciever hitch, ill look for some pictures to post if i can find some. most of the pictures are of the bending process and might not show the mount too well.
M.Martian 04-22-2002, 03:14 PM Any pics would be great. I have an idea of how I want to do it, just looking for more ideas that might work better than what I've got in mind.
M.Martian 04-23-2002, 08:00 PM I got started on the bender mount for the truck today. Here's the results so far. I'm going to add an additional support to crashinaz's setup to help support the weight of the bender.

zuk88 04-23-2002, 08:03 PM Nice work Mark! Now you can drive to my place and bend me a cage!!:D
Tin Bender 04-23-2002, 11:52 PM I wouldn't suggest mounting it in a hitch...
Mount it to the floor as level as possible, that way you can use a level off your tube to make sure your still on plane....my.02
Tin Bender 04-23-2002, 11:55 PM M. Martin, How are you planning on bending anything over 6'??
Unless I'm missing something, you'll be feeding your tube though the rear window?
morpheus 04-24-2002, 08:54 AM TB ... snap a pic of the way your bender is setup ...

The vertical tubing is sleeved so it can be rotated in 90* increments. I'm going to use this as a start and see if I have any troubles with the design. If so, then back to the drawing board.
GhettoRig 04-24-2002, 10:08 AM I went to Home Depot and picked up some threaded concrete sleeves. I installed four of em in my garage floor and just bolt the bender stand down when I need to use it. It only takes about two minutes to bolt it to the floor, and we can park there the rest of the time. I agree, you need to make it as level as possible, so you can make sure all your bends are in the plane you want.
Whizzy 04-24-2002, 11:04 AM Here is what me and my bro came uip with.
Whizzy 04-24-2002, 11:05 AM ...another
Whizzy 04-24-2002, 11:05 AM ...I may as well throw this one in too.
Rock Toy 04-24-2002, 11:05 AM Yep, TB hit it on the head. Although it is convenient and works well if you don't have a shop to mount the bender to, it is pretty much impossible to make more than one bend in the same plane. Takes a good eye to make it work
M.Martian 04-24-2002, 12:00 PM I was originally planning on having sleeved inserts put in for a hard mount but my garage is way too small. It's only a single car garage so I would have problems with long tubing there.
Most of the stuff I will be doing is going to be single bends.
I may still do a removable secondary mounting platform in the driveway which will accept the upper portion of my current mount.
we did ours similar to yours except we extended it way past the reciever hitch with a long 2"X6' sq tube. this allowed feeding the tube easier. as mentioned before without being level its very hard to match two bends on the same plane. we got past this by scribing a line the length of the tube to make all bends with the scribed line in the center of the die. its still takes a good eye.

I was thinking of something similar. I have a detached 1 car garage I use as a shop. To small for lots of stuff so I'm thinking of putting a mount in the drive way leading back to it. However, the summer sun in AZ is not very pleasant to be hauling on a bender, so, for stuff that will fit, I would rather do it in the shop. So, I'm thinking receiver tube sort of and the ability to clock at 90* increments is a good design...
