I apparently broke the cross pin or shaft on my 14bff rear end...I was trailing with a bud and he yelled..." your drain plug fell out of the diff cover''...THERES NO drain plug there so i hop out and notice a hole about the size of a quarter through my diff cover..Astonished since the axle has BRAND new gears bearing's internals I open up to find metal shavings galore and no chunks..I had my buddy pull it forward slowly and counted all teeth everything looked good until i noticed in the carrier holes one missing..

SO is this a mistake of the gear installer?? Or is this just a freak break incident?? Ive heard of spiders breaking but never the cross shaft?????

Trying to figure out if i should have the installer pay for this or not..he said he went through it all and the wear on the teeth look great..

what did the installer install? Ring and Pinion only, or did he assemble the carrier as well? How much weight were you trailering?

i shock loaded and shatterd the spiders in my gov-loc[big surprize] but it also TWISTED the Y pin, for you to simply snap one off of an open + is very very odd, something is wrong and seeing as how you let someone else work on it.................

I had a "used" carrier from another axle put in since the one i had was welded by other owner..

He said he went through all of the carrier and installed new 5.13 gears.
As far as someone else working on my "gears" yeah I dont have the press tools or knowledge even after reading billa's article on gear jobs do i want or need to do it..so yeah i had a shop install them..

As you don't know the history of the spiders and cross shaft I would suspect them first. There isn't much you can do "wrong" when putting them in. Do they have the washers under them?

Yep they had thrust washers behind them..I figure it was just a weird mistake..

do you have the old welded spider gears you had taken out? Got any pics of them? How much would you sell them for?

I just junked the old carrier and spider gears...Are you looking for a good way to weld them?? basically all that was done here was the open ports in the carrier that you can see the spider gears were completely filled in with a weld..I could spin 42's on the road and never broke them...But doing this combined the carrier and spiders to eachother making the whole carrier one...thats why I wanted an open diff carrier so i could save up and get a detroit later down the road.

That is exactly what I did to mine, just welded through the windows and have forgotten about it.
