Are these units ok for normal usage (Mostly highway, occasional off road but not rough usage)? Can they be swapped for a C-6? Local Ford dealership says there may not be a problem with the trans itself. That the problem may be in an electric/electronic component moumted on the case on the drivers side. Any observations experience? What should I do and in what order?

AOD or E4OD? What motor? Sounds like the "component mounted on the case on the driver's side" to which you refer could be the MLPS.

I have the 5.8L engine. Are these generally good units under normal circumstances?

How do you tell a AOD from an E4OD?

Quick'n'easy way to ID it- AOD is shifted in and out of OD using the shift lever, E4OD is shifted in and out of OD using a electric push button either on the end of the shift lever or on the dash.

There is a 1-2-D above the steering column, and a on/off switch on the dash. E4OD?

E4OD sounds like..........(if there is an OD on/off button)
Also, an AOD has an extra cable that is attached to the throttle body
That's an E4OD. They're good units but will require a rebuild at hi mileage and rebuilds are expensive $$$$$. While C6's are easy to rebuild the E4OD is not something the shadetree guy wants to tackle (not to say it's impossible).
