Something to talk about for Mon :D
Well now that Tera offers the 3.15 kit for the Scout autos, and not much interest in a D20 doubler I’m back on the fence about swapping to a manual. I’ve got the big parts to do the swap, but dam the auto has served well. By all rights it should be dead by now. I could sell all the parts for the manual swap to pay for the Tera gears and be happy. The auto needs a rebuild, it’s done it’s job without complaint and by all means should be DOA. I could rebuild the auto for under $200, which I have in the Scout account now (Single guys about to be married should pay attention to that last statement).
I like the idea of a manual less to go wrong, and I know it’ll get me home. The auto you have to deal with the heat issue. I like wheeling the auto, and I see a lot of people switching to auto’s, plus with 3.15’s in the T-case, and 4.56’s in the future for the pumpkins the gearing is about optimal for an auto. I think the auto is a little easier on the drive train, but I’ve also heard otherwise.. I like the feel of a manual, lot more responsive to the throttle.
BTW I talked to Tera and they could sell me both bull gears so I could swap back and forth between the two. So I might do the Tera gears with the Auto and see how I like it. With Tera’s I’ll be at 35.2:1, about right IMHO for an auto, with the manual I’d be at 92:1 a bit shy of the 120:1 I’d like to be at with a manual.
All right boys let’s chew it up.

I learned that REALLY quick. That's the ONLY reason I'm getting shiat done on my rig.
BTW if you can get both bull gears stick with the auto see how you like it. Switch if you have to.
I made the switch to an auto after my clutch linkage (stock) on my blazer broke in a seemingly irreperable spot.
but I defintely miss the 6.5??:1 granny of the SM465 :(:(

I would stay auto and get both bull gears. Then if you need to switch quick you can. I can't see any reson that the auto will not work. They just need a little "tunning".:)

My EB driving friend broke a LOT more axles with his Auto than with his NP435.
I think it had to do with the auto shifting sometimes when he didn't want it to (and he's a full-throttle 351W kinda guy).
I know of ONE front axle broken since he put the 4spd in - and he didn't change his driving style.
I also know he's driven home 25 miles IN REVERSE with his auto..
Then again, in Moab a year (or two?) ago he also managed to split his 9" in two.. split the housing in two at the welded seams, sheared one of the axle tubes...
All because he wouldn't break out the winch to pull someone up the hill.
Anyhow.. STICK IT. Show everyone you know how to handle three pedals.
Install a thumb-operated hand throttle if you think you'll have a problem with 3 pedals and 2 feet.
And/or a line-lock with a shifter thumb-switch.
Sell the auto to someone that needs to talk on their Cell phone while sipping their Latte and weaving in n' out of traffic.
That's why my DD has a slushbox. :flipoff2:
Oh, and it was cheap.

For me..it's all about predictability....An auto has a mind of it's own...a manual will run withour fluid if need be!
And the Scout fund for married guys...yeah I know. I already told her that once we combine checking acounts and she sees what I actually spend a month, she is going to $hit...she laughed..I don't think she cares as long as we have stuff for the house. However, I am still going to have a Scout fund...I just need to figure out how to get her to let me put aside ~$400-$500/month:eek: ...Go thing I am building my Scout BEFORE I get married:D

:D :D Sounds ALL TO FAMILULAR..... and I'm not married yet either...... well, your going to drop sooner :flipoff2:
My "scout fund" is an old wood cigar box. "proceds" from all the junk I sell and actually make money on ( ) go in there. "Discresionary Fund", also help pay for Hawaii :(
Course, some of my "surplus" paycheck can go in there as well...... *some* Now I just got buy and sell enough stuff to pay for the ARB and the cage

No, you didn't read it correctly, I got it out, I can't drive the fawker back in!
I'm sticking with the auto tho, gonna patch it up or swap in another.

I say go with the standard, i wheeled mine for 2 years with an auto and all i did was worry about it getting hot, swapped it for a t-19 close and wheeled it with it for about 3 years that way never had one problem with it, and just swaped in a t-19 wide and love it, now i got to get the Terra 4:1 gears for the dana 300 and i'am set.

Hey, I'm your average mocha-sippin' cell phone user and love my auto. ;) Mostly cause my wife can drive it, but I think it's actually MORE forgiving than a stick. Granted, it takes off down a hill like a freight train passing a bum, and at odd angles it starves for fluid, and it's left me stranded more than once, but the same can be said for my wife, and I love her anyway....:rasta:
But did you know that Tera has the 4:1 for the D300/auto? I guess you prolly did, but I thought that might throw a curve in your decision... I'm saving my pennies so I can get that kit.

I'm more preferable to a manual. Even if I am not towing anything I have had too many autos fry on me when under heavy load. I don't know the price to rebuild an auto but a kit for a manual is right at $50. I think my scout fund is going to start growing because the wife is starting toget excited about this project. But then any extra we have either goes into the 4x4's or guns so it's fun either way.
As for the cell phone addicts they can do some crafty insertions with those phones cause they are completly dangerous when driving and talking. :D :flipoff2: :D

If you are talking rocks I vote for an auto...everyone bitches about autos, but if you do it right you can fix most of the complaints. And it wheels better than a stick... :flipoff2:
I run two coolers and a good gauge, I also have a full reverse manual valve body, put a drain plug in the pan so you can change fluid often. I am running a low stall converter. And I have a vent for the breather... the only thing you cannot completely compensate for is compression braking.

Gear it down a bit more and you can have compression braking too. I think about 50:1 is about right.:)

i wheeled a stick in my jeep for 11 years and just this last year i swapped in a th400 when i put the vortec in. i was worried that i would not like it....well I LOVE IT!!!! it wheels better than my np435 did. the complaint i had about the manual was it seemed like i needed more gears. there were situations when i didn't hve the right gear. either i was too low or too high. no with the auto i don't have that problem. i can crawl and light it up all in the same gear. my crawl ratio is 42to1 with a 3.8 atlas and if i put it in first i DO have compression braking. that was one of the fears of going to an auto but i sure don't have a problem with it. yes if i have the shifter set to 3rd i'll fly going down hill but when it is locked down in first it compression brakes just fine. as i said the auto wheels better. the down side is there is more to go wqrong with with the auto. i personally have not had any problems yet. the thing is do research and see what the problem areas can be and set your up accordingly.

If you run the stock (low stall) converter you get compression braking, too.
Not as much with my 3500. :D
