View Full Version : Reuse drag link on full width swap?

Ok, so i bolted in my front axle last night and got the hubs on. While I was mocking everthing up, I noticed that with my manual steering box in, the drag link is about 3 in or so short for my high steer, low tie rod, full width chevy swap. However, when going from outside frame rail manual to inside fram rail power, it appears that I will gain this 3 or so inches. I have yet to make final precise measurements, but it appears that if i can have a high steer arm made that has the small taper scout draglink end, I can reuse the stock drag link eventhough I am going soa and full width. Does anybody see an obvious reason why this wont work? I am wanting to avoid the extremely high price of dom for my drag link (16.25 a foot) and don't see any reason why a stock replacement isn't strong enough.

scout II at a glance, 74 304 with front 76 blazer d44 non flat top pass. SOA, 33 12.50's. cutn turn. RIGHT HAND DRIVE. manual steer going power steer.

It's very weak, won't last long.

X2, turned mine into a 'U' going through a mud hole:rolleyes: Either buy one, or make one. The stock will not last

anybody know of a source for tre's to make one? Mine at least is a smaller taper than 85 blazer 1-tons used for everything else.

do i have to use dom? can't I just use some bigger cold rolled?

You could box in the stock one with a couple sections of angle iron.

I ran mine like that for a while when I was sprung under and It held up nice. Angle is also a heluva lot cheaper than DOM.

No, you don't *have* to use drawn over mandrel tubing. Yes, you can use less expensive cold rolled material. Less strong than DOM, true, but anything will be better than the stock link.

I have done this before, works great just doesn't look real cool.
