Well, I finally got the Grand Vitara back from the dealer. The timing chains are definitely making some noise, and I have two new timing chain tensioners to install ($160 for both from the dealer).
I was finally able to check the maintenance records on the GV, and discovered that the dealer replaced one timing chain tensioner at 39,000 miles, and now I've got the problem again at 81,000 miles.
The labor charged to the warranty company at 39,000 was about 1,200, and the dealer wanted $1,200 to replace them this time. The book figure for this job is 12 hours.
My guess is that the book tells you to pull the engine to fix these things. That's hard to believe. Oh, well, the FSM's are on the way, and we have backup vehicles, so the GV will be sitting in the driveway, until I can get this fixed.
Anybody else have similar problems with GV timing chain tensioners?
