from the website
Reamers are used specifically for sizing holes. It is the most accurate way of drilling out tapered holes on steering or suspension components. A great tool to use when converting from tie rod ends to rod ends.

They are designed to only take out a small amount .5mm to 1mm (sorry don't know in imperial) and to do it an accurate tollerance ... the reason we have them is if a drill bit has been sharpened chances are its going to be uneven this will couse the bit to cut harder on one side and cut the hole slightly bigger (I've noticed off my sharping variations of as much as a mm :shaking: then I'm usless at sharping)
Use a drill bit to enlarge (unless your talking fine cuts or centering tolerance is an issue, locating dowels on case's etc then step it up with reamers) ... heres a tip for ya use a blunt bit if your only taking a small amount, it helps stop the bit cutting hard into the hole and jamming the drill

I use them excessively at work. We build/service dumptrucks and for doing on truck repairs (IE not just using the muncher/punch on a new part youve just fabbed) the reamer is excellent. Takes alot longer to run a 1/2" to 5/8" and larger bit through a hardened 3/8-1/2" frame (sometimes larger when a framejob has been done)...just run a 3/8 pilot hole and ream away.
For precision stuff, nothing beats using the right size bit and the right tools, but the reamer has some very good uses in my mind. They can be quite expensive but very valuble to have in the bit drawer.

Step drills are the way to go for enlarging existing holes in thin plate or sheet metal. Reamers are for precise sizing of holes. At my work we have them in sizes half a thou above and below size as well as on size. Typically you drill 1/64 under the size you want and then ream to size.
