: few things i wanna get done.

figured id start a new thread...

first thing i wanna get done on the 78 f150 is find a way to run some half doors or something that will still be street legal for summer use, anyone got pics of a 70's style Bronco or truck with half doors? im looking for style ideas because my current doors are shot, im getting a new set for the winter and goign to make my current ones halfers.

second id liek a locker for the front axle, right now i have a clocked knuckle 44 in it till i get a decent 60. would you guys just weld this up? i heard that if you have to turn and cant you can just put it in 2x4 and you will be able to turn, i will be running 38's tops till i get the 60.

third i still need to figure out how to wire up my dash with the stock wirting in the 78's, i put a 1981 f250 dash in my pickup and the wiring didnt match up (who woulda guessed :flipoff2: ) so if anyone can give me a hand with that you would be my god.

finally i need a d60 for the front really bad, this 44 isnt going to last to long for me, i know because i had the 44 before on 33's and killed shafts left and right. so if ya got one and are close to my area let me know

It will still bind because when you turn your steering wheel while moving, the outside tire will be wanting to spin faster than the inside tire. Unlocking a hub in 2wd will allow you to turn.

just unlocking a hub will suffice

Just unlocking a hub with a welded front differential and still locked in 4x4 will still cause a bind, and will be hard on axleshafts.

There are some guys over on FSB that made half doors. Go over there and do a quick search, you should be able to find what you need there.

Care to elaborate. If the hub is unlocked the d-shaft is them only driving one tire. Still allowing the one that it unlocked to spin faster/slower than the other.

I ran a welded front before and never had a problem with it. welding it is going to be hard on a 44 anyway

I think you would be wasting your time welding your front...especially if you say you were breaking all the time with 33's and I assume and open carrier earlier....what do you think is going to happen with a welded front and 38's on the 44???? Not to mention all the steering problems. Do yourself a favor and leave it open until you find a 60.

Then weld it? :flipoff2:

HA...well a locker would be better, but if he got hydro assist or full hydro I dont see a problem with it, other than going straight when you want to steer:flipoff2:

I must have read this argument 20 times.. some say weld, some say don't. I'm in the same boat.. I have my 60 up front but there's a lot of things I'd rather spend $$ on right now than a locker. My plan was to weld it up and see about a locker later if I think it'd be better.

I also want to twin stick my 205 so I can do front wheel drive.. hoping that with a good e-brake would let me cut-turn.

The differences of opinion on this topic always make me wonder...

My front 60 is welded. Just unlock a hub and it steers like it is open plus you have 3 wheel peel.

I'm not saying there is anything wrong with welding the front...there are many drawbacks but they are also very cheap and effectively gain traction. But welding a dana 44 is really asking for trouble.

i take it you never heard of swaping axles. i swapped in a 14bFF and a 3/4ton 8 luck d44 closed knuckle with kingpins

The bottem line is that when your trying to steer it pushes hard with the front welded, and while you can unlock a hub to counteract that it gets old REAL fast hopping in and out to flip your hub. Really, its not so much of a matter or whether you should or not, but the freaking inconvienance of it. Plus, if you need to go to slugs down the road your pretty much screwed. This is just one of the many reasons selectables are sweet...have it locked tight and when you've got a tight corner to make just flip that switch and she'll swing around easy-peasy. Another flip of the switch and your locked solid again. So, I guess the real question right now is whats more important, the extra money or the hassel of jumping in and out flipping hubs?

half doors are cake!

cut a line out on them, use the skill saw, lay a peice of 16 guage in there, weld it up, make it pretty, and dont forget the can holder :smokin:

IF I CAN GET SOMEONE TO SEND ME SOME BEAT UP DOORS ( :flipoff2: )
ill make a tutorial on them. ive done prolly 10 sets, and it takes about 3 hours start to finish.

or i can make you some tube doors, now that i have a bender :smokin:
