: Cracked frame!!

Damn it! I found two cracks in my frame yesterday.

Crack # 1 is in the front driver's side frame horn just in front of the Scout steering box across the bottom of the frame. This one looks like an easy fix.

Crack # 2 is on the passenger side where the front hanger for the rear spring is. This one runs from the bottom front of the hanger all the way up around and back down to the bottom. So basically my spring is hanging by the inner boxing that was done at the factory. :skull:

So how the heck do I fix the one in the back? It looks as though I'll have to grind off a tiny bit of the hanger to expose the crack under it. Then what? Drill a small hole at each end of the crack to stop it? Grind it into a fillet(sp?). Then weld it back up? It doesn't look like there's any room for plating. Should I weld the inner boxing to the outer frame too? $hit! $hit! $hit! *&%$*@&*)@(&%(&@$&:nuke:

I'm supposed to go wheeling Friday morning too. :mad2:

Suggestions?

Thanx.

Jimmy

For now you can weld a plate to the inside and outside . Then just weld up the crack.
That should get you wheeling just fine.
However eventually you will want to pull the spring hanger off and weld it properly..

Yep my frame cracked similar to that seven years ago...my crack went from rivet hole to rivet hole along the edge of the spring hanger. I drill each end of the crack and laid two passes down. the first over the crack, the second a weaving pattern to try and fuse the hanger into more virgin metal. The only problem was cuttting the hanger off later for more substantial repairs

i also had the same problem-welded it up and boxed it in, haven't had a problem since.

sounds like a good plan to me.
Make sure you groove the crack out, and run some deep penatration.

As for drilling the holes, never thought of that before, sounds damn smart.

If you check out the frame section in the older Toyota Chassis and Body Shop manuals, Toyota shows how to properly repair different cracks in the frame.
