: 76 PowerWagon w100
HecTiK 07-24-2006, 01:33 AM I have a 76 w100 with a D44 front and i think its a 8 3/4 rear. It has fulltime 4x4 if that helps. What would be a good front axle to swap it with? I have 33's on it now, but somethin on the driverside front broke. I think its the wheelbearing. Thats what Ive been told at least. It literally sits like this " / ". I have a set of 35's Im going to put on once I decide I find some wheels I like. What axles would fit right on here? Would I need to replace the rear axle too?
freak007 07-24-2006, 03:54 AM 76 is going to have the small (weak) wheel bearing and small (4 1/2 x 5) bolt pattern. Since you already have a set of tires you want to use I assume you want to keep the 15" rim, but for 35" tires you DEFINATLY need the big wheel bearing D44 that can be found in 80-93(?) dodge trucks (and ramchargers) if you swap the entire axle you should grab the rear and the rims also because they will have a differant bolt patern than you have now.
If you want to keep the full time 4x4 you could just gram a set of knuckles from a 85-93(?) with a CAD and keep your front axle, but unless you swap the rear axle also you will have to use mis matched rims on the front and rear. If you swap the rear axle also make sure it has the same gear ratio as the one that is in there now.
Elwenil 07-24-2006, 06:57 AM I would swap to a part time kit or a NP205 transfer case also. I believe it has been said that running a NP203 with out the normal full time axle engaged will damage the differential in the case.
HecTiK 07-26-2006, 05:20 PM How would you bolt up the transfer case? Doesnt the np205 have 3 driveshafts or something like that?
Yes, the 205 is a divorced TC, which means there is a short driveline between the transmision and TC(think it may be called the intermediate shaft???). You would have to get the 205, with a crossmember out of a dodge that came with that setup from the factory. Your frame probably already has the holes for the crossmember, so it should be pretty easy to relocate. You'll have to put a different tailshaft on your transmission as well, and also shorten your rear driveline and lengthen your front driveline.

freak007 07-27-2006, 08:08 AM when I put the divorced 205 in my 72 the bolt holes were already there, I grabbed the transfer case with shift linkage, and all 3 drive shafts it was a simple bolt in deal. At the time I did that I also swapped my engine and transmission for a 440/727 out of a 73 charger. If you ever want to go BB in the future I would definatly go with a divorced TC because it really opens up your options for transmissions. BB 4x4 transmissions can be hard to find.
HecTiK 07-28-2006, 07:22 PM Would the driveshafts that came with the 205 fit my truck if i find one out of a short box?
Nor Cal Wheelin 07-29-2006, 12:44 AM Yes, the 205 is a divorced transfer case

****((((EDIT))))****I have a married N-P 205d (((( DODGE )))) sitting beside my house as we speak.....

I doubt you will ever find a shortbed Dodge 4x4 with a divorced NP205 from the factory. This was from the era when manufacturers didn't make shortbed 4x4s, or if they did it was rare. Driveline angles would be a little cramped also by 1970s fullsize truck standards.
Power_Wagon 07-31-2006, 09:00 AM New guy here with a question! What is the advantage of having the NP205 instead of the NP203?? For knowledge sake, i have 77' W150 short bed regular cab with the 440/727 combo, but swapped out axles for the the 3/4 ton axles running full time 4 wheel drive. Eventually i want the truck to be producing 500hp/500 ft/lbs, what would the ideal combonation of running gear be for that application?
Elwenil 07-31-2006, 10:12 AM Think of the 203 as the fulltime version of a 205. They are similar in strength, but the 205 is still stronger because it lacks the 203s center differential and chain drive. With 500 HP, I wouldn't use anything less than a 205 and if you break that, step up to a Rockwell transfer unit.
HecTiK 07-31-2006, 11:50 PM So that could explain not being able to hold a front u-joint in my truck? It always wheel hops when im turning sharpleft. Maybe thats the wheelbearing that just went out, or balljoints or too high of an angle. How do you lower the t-case on 203? I have a 5in susp lift and i dont think the people who had it before me lowered it or anything.
HecTiK 07-31-2006, 11:57 PM Would Chevy axle's fit on my truck? I can't find too many Dodge's around town or too close out of town, but theres plenty of fords and Chevys.

Elwenil...does that mean mine is rare? Or am I miss understanding what you are saying? I have a 73 W100, shortbed 318/727, and a divorced NP 205....??
Kyle
Elwenil 08-01-2006, 06:35 AM I would probably consider it "rare". Scarce at the very least. They may be more common out West where rust isn't such an issue, but the vast majority of the survivors I see around here are all longbed. I have only seen one shortbed with a divorced 205 and I'm still not convinced that it was factory built. I do know of a '73 model stepside that is short wheelbase with the divorced 205, but it's been tinkered with a bit.
Power_Wagon 08-01-2006, 01:17 PM so what kind of driveline changes would i have to make to switch from 203 to a 205???
Also whats the latest model 3/4 ton truck axles can i use before i have to make mods to my 77'? Had a friend following me yesterday and he said the truck was going down the road sideways, and i stopped and looke and the rear tires had some serious pigeon toe going on where the tire was on the pavement.
Elwenil 08-01-2006, 02:50 PM Check your rear springs to make sure you haven't broken the leaf spring pin and the axle has shifted. You should be able to use any full size Dodge truck axles up to 1993 without major mods. Stay away from the CAD axles.
Power_Wagon 08-01-2006, 05:27 PM im gonna get flamed for this, but whats a CAD axle, ive never heard of it! (((Edit)) brain fart, nevermind that comment!
