: Beefing the spring hangers.

I think I need to beef my spring hangers on my scout.

Is just rewelding them good enough? The factory stuff looks like hell.

Or should I add plating too to make them more rigid?

or the last idea (I don't REALLY want to do this) Replace them all together??

Whaddya guy think:confused:

Thanks in advance.

The important thing to fix is the rear of the front springs - the fixed end.

Patty will probably post some pics of his.

Basically take a chunk of.. 1/8" or 3/16" or 1/4" plate and weld it to the bottom rear of the fixed hanger, and then weld the other end to the frame a few inches back to make a triangular gusset.

That's the #1 most common failure point.

While you're there, check the frame side body mounts in that area and make sure they're not cracking off. :D

I'm not too sure how to beef up the rears.. I've just settled for re-welding the bottom section of the brackets every time I grind 'em off on a rock. :D

Actually, I don't think I have any pictures, since my welds are so ugly. On the inside, I welded flate plate across the hanger and frame, because the frame was a little dimpled from impacts. That spreads the upward load into the frame better.

On the back side, I used 2x2 box tubing, cut to angle, so it fits between the back of hte hanger and the frame. Sits flush with the bottom of the frame.

I lied. Here is a poor picture

Notice the slightly bent spring? Something has to give, somewhere...... If you beef up the spring hangers.....

I'd defintely rather be sitting on the trail with a SLIGHTLY bent spring that a BROKEN spring hanger. Considering that I don't have an on board welder.

Speaking of RS, having fun with that long length front driveshaft that has been giving you so much trouble because of your RS Rusty????? :D

Yes, RS helps prevent bending springs and knocking spring hangers off, at the expense of loss of traction, approach angles (had a lot of fun getting up high rider wall last time didn't you? ;) )and front driveline length issues, as well as.... never mind :D

I bent that spring goofing around in an icy parking lot. Broke all four tires loose and slid into a curb. Ouch. Couldn't walk on this ice it was so slippery. Teach me to screw around...... ;)

Yep. Tweaked spring, no biggy. Easy to repair/replace, and not critical on the trail.

Bend or shear a spring hanger on the trail, and you are in a tough spot.....

Another way to do it is to take a piece of 1/4" plate, heat it up, and whoommp it around the hanger, wrapping the hanger and welding to both that and the frame.
