I have a hpd44 out of 79 ford extended cab. I am trying to redo the steering to one ton steering and flip the tie rod. I am looking to find whether I need inserts and if I do need them where can I get them. I have searched but didn't find anything. I know this is a newbe question, but I don't know much about ford stuff. flame away

I believe those knuckles are tappered and you will have to retapper them by putting inserts in and retappering from the top or go with a GM one ton tie rod and just tapper from the top.

correct, they are tapperd from bottom to top, bottom is bigger then the top, you would have to drill then tapper them, i was goign to do the same untill i relized its a d44 and it doesnt need 1ton steering :flipoff2:

I have the one ton TREs and I have read that you drill the hole out to 5/8" and ream with a 7* reamer. but that was on a different axle. On the one that I have, the smaller end of the taper (top) is already 5/8". If i were to just ream it out it would make an hour glass shape. So I asume i need inserts but cant find where to get them.

why wouldnt you just drill it to 3/4 then get a peice of tubing, press it in then ream that?

I doubt there's enough meat on the tubing to ream the proper taper.
As for the inserts, www.bcbronco's carries some but they are for Ford TRE's.
I've never had a Chevy and Ford TRE side by side to compare so maybe a call to them will clear things up...good luck:smokin:

take the hole to 3/4 then put some shc/80 in it, plenty of meat, or just drill it and lose the taper

I put a full width 44 from an F100 that came with front drums in my EB. I reamed the knuckles from the top and put the bigger chevy TREs above the knuckles. The new taper completely removed any of the old steering under taper. I'd rather put the $ and effort towards a bigger TRE instead of bushings, inserts, etc.

The drum brake tie rod steering are is smaller than the newer disk brake ones.l
You have to drill them out to 3/4" to clean them up. Then after you taper it it isn't going to have much meat left. I drilled them out and used 3/4" Heim joints and DOM to make my own.
some people don't like to do this as they say its soooo dangerous and Hiemies are not purchasable everywhere. My rear links use the same Heimies and i have about 6 spares on board (got a swinging deal on them)
this is the easiest way IMHO

If you taper it for the 1-tone chebby tre's you should have enought meat. If you really want new cones, BC Bronco's sells them for their TRO kit because they use F-150 TRE's which are much smaller than the Chebby ones and you need the cone.
I have a .370 wall Tie-rod with 3/4-16 threads for heims in the ends for sale if you want. You would just have to drill your knuckles to 3/4 and use 3/4 bolts.
