I have a 92 ranger that has a 4.0 and a good auto trans. I've been asked if the trans from the ranger will fit a 97 explorer with a 4.0 trans. Both are 4x4 set ups. thanks bob

You'll be able to bolt it up no problem, but the 97 Ex used a different transmission, so you're gonna have computer issues, not to mention potential problems with driveshafts, etc. Plus the A4LD was a POS.

That's being too nice!:shaking:

The trannies that came after the A4LD weren't that much better either. IMO, the best tranny that you can bolt up to the back of a 4.0 OHV (not SOHC) is the C5 that came in the 83-85 Rangers and 84-85 Bronco 2s. Its basicaly a C4 with a different bellhousing to fit the 60 degree V6 (2.8, 2.9, 4.0) engines and a different tailhousing with the 5 bolt pattern to fit the RBV (Ranger Based Vehicle) t-cases. (BW1350 and BW1354) It has a few internal differences to help with lubrication but for all intents and purposes it is mechanicaly and physicaly identical.

If you have a good C4 you can also use a C5 bellhousing to bolt it up to the V6 engines. That gives you the familiar Ford 6 bolt tailhousing pattern that fits all the Ford fullsize t-cases. Of course you will run into frame clearance issues but if you are building a trail rig, the mods are maybe worth it.
