i bought this axle and have never played with full floating axles before so i'm pretty lost as to how i go about removing the drum brakes. i can't get the drums off....
i removed the shafts
i see a huge nut, i'm thinking... guessing it needs to be removed and then the drum assembly will come off.
can anyone tell me what tools i need or point me in the direction of a write up that would cover step-by-step instructions for dissassembling the brakes?
it would be greatly appreciated.
thanks in advance.

There are little metal tabs that need to be bend off the nut, then either buy the correct hub socket or hammer & punch the nut free. If the drums and shoes are in OK shape should be able to use the adjusters to back the shoes off the drum. My shoes were nearly worn through the drums on this J/Y axle.... hence the plasma

You are right about that large nut. After you pull the shafts out, it is basically identical to doing front wheel bearings...just a bigger and heavier.

Hmmm, I think I like the plasma method :D
Yea, once you get your nut off, err, I mean get the nut off just give the drum some raps with the hammer all along the outside and it should back off. If that fails you can use the adjusters as sodaboy mentioned.

When all else fails, you can take the wheel cylinder bolts out, cut the 2 shoe retaining pins off the back with a torch. Start the drum off then get in there and burn the e brake cable off.

Dr.Doom's idea is better, but I like blasting shit with my plasma.......:D

yummm i wish i had a plasma cutter, haha
got the brakes all taken off. going with a disc brake conversion so i no longer need any other parts....
kinda sad though... the drums looked great... not at all what i expected from a junkyard. i almost regret ditchign them in favor of $500 worth of disc brakes.
can anyone verify the size wheel i'll be able to run on the dana 44 and dana 60 (1979 f250)? i wanted to stay with 15" wheels but i was told i would need to run a 16" or 16.5" wheel b/c of the disc break conversion.
thee are going under my YJ full width so i'll obviously have some backspacing issues to deal with which is why i'm assuming my buddy was recommending a larger wheel....

wish i had that when i got my 14bFF, the damn brakes were rusted fast to the drums that bad i set there for 1 hour hitting each drum with a 10# hammer
