I have a strange question for you. I have a 2000 E350 with the 7.3 PSD. My question is: I can change my oil and filters drive it around the block and the new oil is as black as the oil I drained out. This is my first diesel and I have owned it since new. I am not concerned just curious. Thanks for the input. Jim

Maybe blowby? One never completely removes all the old oil during an oil change...so maybe the new oil is being contaminated/colorwise by the residual oil?

Are you sure your not changing your air filter instead of your oil filter?

Yes, I am pretty sure...LOL I know it doesnt all come out, but when putting 4 gallons of new oil in one would expect it to look a little better, a little longer.

My old 6.9 is the same way. Don't worry about it, that's why they make diesel oil.....it takes the cold start contamination very well.

thats a diesel, get used to it. oil in my 96 F350 will stay clean for the first 20 miles or so but after that it's as black as what i pulled out. just keep close tabs on changing it every 5K miles and you will be fine.

what kind of oil do you use? Rotella 15w-40?

You could add a propane system. then you get horsepower and a lot cleaner oil.

Seems to me though the people with the best results as far as keeping their oil clean are the people who keep it in the bottles :flipoff2:

not confirmed this yet, but I have heard the HPOP holds a fair amount of oil so changing your oil there is still nasty oil in the HPOP which is not really drainable.

whats the hpop? high pressure oil pump?

HPOP = High pressure oil pump

the HPOP doesn't hold squat the HPOP reservoir holds about 2 quarts and another 1.5 quarts or so are in the HPO rails. You don't drain either with a typical oil change. You can siphon the oil out of the HPOP res but in a van that will be a PITA since the HPO res is on the top front of the engine. The rails are a PITA if you drain the to get the air back out of them.

Either your wit is too clever for me, or your grammar and spelling render you irrelevant.

Either way, I don't know what the fuck you are talking about. Please clarify.

It's a normal Diesel engine thing. It will be cleaner looking but it will never look like it does coming out of the bottle........

One thing to consider since you have a PSD now, is running a synthetic motor oil in it. I run Schaeffer's Oil in Everything!!! It's friggin' awesome shit!! I saw a large gain in MPG's when I swiched from Rottella T to Schaeffer's!!!

Their grease and gear oil WILL NOT MIX with water ( Become a milky color ). It has a lot of friction modifiers and Moly in it. In fact, if you go wheelin and get in some deep water, all you have to do is pull the drain plug on your diffs the next morning and you can drain out any water!!!!

Here's a link to em!!

Changed oil at Walmart for 5 years, every diesel does that unless its BRAND new. Figure oil pump, turbo, oil cooler and a bajillion oil lines keep in some of the sooty oil.

the other week, my hpop decided I needed to do an oil change on the freeway at 75mph. 2 gallons later I was backup and going with what I thought was "the fix". Then that let go and I lost another 2 gals or so!

For those wondering... o-ring on the big 11/16 bolt or drain plug on the backside of the hpop let go... what a fawkin mess that made  Oh this was two days later after the o-rings blew out of the turbo pedestal for the EBPV actuator.

moral of the story, just wait... your powerchoke will most likely drain the oil system for you at somepoint :flipoff2:

I have been running Amsoil's Series 3000 in her since 10,000 miles 4 gallons at a time, and I run their remote dual filter set up.

As soon as i start my truck to get the oil cycled, then shut it back off to check oil again. It is black.

HOWEVER, my buddies 97 PSD, it will be clean when it comes out. His truck confuses me.

Just depends on the truck, and its normal.

all of our tow trucks are like that. we have about 15 trucks, all Fords with the 5.9 Cummins... you change it, put the 18 quarts in, start it... before you can blink its black again.

now, we have one 2005 with the 6.0L, and its usually clean. (well, cleaner than the 5.9s)

i wouldnt worry about it.
