: New Goodies
robc10x 04-22-2002, 04:11 PM After the recent roll, I broke down and decided to go one more step closer to the dark side. Sorry Dan, I sold your Boggers and bought a good used set of 39.5's. I can't swing the D60 or Rockwell front yet, so I ordered a set of those Warn shiny axle shafts & CTM joints. Anyone else running this combo on a D44? Am I a complete Newbie Moron? Do I really give a sh*t? :flipoff2: We'll see how long it lasts, but hopefully it'll get me down the road a few months or so. Then again, I'm not a skinny pedal abuser....
Thought I'd share. I'm as happy as a little Giiiirrrrllll :D

You're not allowed to post giggly girly posts about your new toys until you produce pictures of the busted stuff, first! :D
So where are those roll-over pictures?
What are you running for a rear end, Rob?
Will you be able to turn with a stock width front end? My 36s hit the springs..
ol John Henry 04-22-2002, 06:40 PM Sweet.
That’s the best you can do with a D44 sooooo…… we will see.
( Luis shattered his D44 alloys at ice breaker):flipoff2:
I just ordered 35spline shafts and CTM’s for my D60… now I’m flat broke:(
When R U picking up the fenders:question:
Hayraker 04-22-2002, 07:46 PM I got the Detroit for the front 60 today.

Besides, how does one do a body lift when the mounts are 10 years gone:confused:

Don't tell me that!! But then again, Luis was running 45" tractor tires.... ..... I guess we'll just have to stick 'er in it....
May be by Sunday to pick up the Fenders if that's ok... Got a hectic weekend ahead - truck is heading up to Jimmy's to get the rest of the stringers in on my cage... I'm such a pussy I can't weld.... But I can break stuff and fix it - that's gotta count for something. I'd like to see those 60 CTMs....HUGE! I'll call you Thurs or Fri....

Sorry man - just had my nipples all hard... I've got some pics but I'm such a newbie dumbass that I can't figure out how to post them... Nothing in the faq - I'll do a search & see what comes up. Maybe Old Scout will tell me how :D J/K!!
Keeping the 44 for the rear for now (carrying 3 or 4 spare shafts) but have my eyes open for a CHEAP 60 that will fit reasonably well... I hate to say it, but next winter we may try and shoehorn a pair of Rocks underneath, so the D44's just have to last a bit longer. With all their drawbacks, the Rocks are still $800 for a pair of steering axles over here on the right coast.... Beats the piss out of a built Front D60... But THAT's a debate in itself.... Course the Quarter Eliptical Rock in the rear maybe too much to figure out...
I probably won't be able to turn much w/the stock width front end, but it was manageable w/the 16" wide Boggers on 4" offset rims, so I should be marginal w/18" wide and 3.5" offset. I'll let you know.... RUBBIN's RACIN!!! :D
REDDMANIAC 04-23-2002, 06:55 AM Well, I got my dually hubs machined down to SRW style, got my calipers, awaiting some D60 Drive Pucks i got off Ebay & now I need the other stuf I can get form Napa or Autozone like bearings & shit. Not sure what locker Im gonna go with tho. For those who asked I did not machine the hubs for 5x5.5 lug, sorry:(

Ever wonder why I still haven't put my 1" body lift in? :D
Or why my doors won't close and the windshield has cracked w/o hitting anything with it? :D
One of these days I'll fix the body mounts...
In the meantime, the speakers for the crewcab should be here tonight, along with the new Pertronix and a few other goodies... :D
Bought the rest of the steel to finish my drive-over trailer fender ramps this morning, too.

I've been carrying ONE spare rear 'shaft with me for a few years.. only had to use it once. :D
Thus far my big problem has been bending the flanges.. and bigger tires don't help.
my eyes open for a CHEAP 60 that will fit reasonably well... I hate to say it,
Got my 4.56 rear '60 for free.. well, got a 4.10 rear for free (30sp) and traded it for a 16sp 4.56 rear.. which will need some 35sp shafts ordered. :)
Not in the near future though.. workin' on the tow-rig.

Yeah, but rubbin' tires are BAD when racing.. leads to cut tires and flats and getting towed off the course. :D

Hey REDD, how much did the machine shop charge, and I'm sorry man, I was bidding against ya on the drive pucks:D , I was hoping someone else would get em, because after I had the high bid for a couple days I realized I didn't need em.
That Mick 04-23-2002, 04:17 PM Got the rest of my body parts in:D :D
including 100" rockers NOT 118's
But, Scout FX did throw in a pair of body mounts for free:cool:
Now to get the right rockers.
Anybody want a pair of NEW galvinized 100" inner rockers???

Matt.. the "right" rockers are available at Pacific... (they service SoDak? Or whatever your steel dealer is)
2x2x.120 square tubing.
I plan to cut out my rockers and replace with the tubing.. so why not just start there? You'll never worry about caving in the rockers on a rock that way.
There's a write-up on the BB in the FAQ or Tech Sections about someone building theirs like this.
Tim in KS had some details, too, if I'm not mistaken.
Or did I miss the announcement of this being your Ted Ornas Award candidate?
That Mick 04-23-2002, 04:36 PM That was my original think, I've even got the stock sitting in the scrap pile...
Now to convince the body man (roomie)that that'll work...:flipoff2: :flipoff2:
Might have to try that. Didn't Hooper do his like that???

Dave is too busy wanting to restore things. :D
Hooper just made rocker-protectors to protect his stock units.
Curt Cleavenger might've cut his rockers out.. I can't remember.
As long as the supports that are perpendicular to the rocker are there, it shouldn't be too hard to figure this out.
Make sure you make the new rockers shorter than stock, so when you sawzall the fenders you won't have to cut off the new rocker. :D
I'll probably end up installing about HALF of the new sheetmetal and 'glass I have in my shed.. the other half will be scrap left-over Sawzall dust... :D

Uh, Tom???
EVERTHING from the A pillar to the B pillar, and from the tranny tunnel to the outside rocker is going to be new.
What supports are you talking about, the floor supports that I'm making out of angle iron???

Hey, that was my idea, too! :D
In that case, no problem, since you're fabbing the supports, just fab 'em to reach the square tube end. You might've had to extend/shorten the stockers.
I like the angle idea myself.. welded right to the underside of the floor (with some 3M weld-thru primer, of course).. no more getting mud packed between the corners of the stock stiffeners (where it "arches" down from the floor to the rocker in a nice smooth bend making a good mud trap) promoting rust.
That Mick 04-23-2002, 05:45 PM Started checking, what do you think the best way is to handle the front body mount.
I'm thinking cut out the square tube right there to match the stock inner rocker.
And how would you attach the out rocker to the inner (tube)
the stock inner rocker is 3" or so
The tube would be 2 or 2.5".
Anybody???

You're going to make me crawl under my Scout tonight, aren't you? :flipoff2:
use more tube? :D
I wonder if round tube would be a good choice, so it'd slide better? Make it harder to attach the stiffeners though - you'd have to cope every last one of 'em. Yuck.
I think I've seen pictures of someone using square tubing (maybe move it "inboard" to meet the stock inner edge) and then use some angle, open face of the "V" to the square tube, on the outside to protect it.
Stronger, and it would slide a bit better - either right along the pointy edge of the angle, or slide you down off the angle to the square at the bottom?
Heck, cobble something up and show me pictures so I can improve on it when I get around to mine. :D

But that idea has been bouncing around inside of the head for about 6 months now. Just can't get motivated with the sheetmetal thing.

I think there's another Tim in KS.. Andover, IIRC.
He's posted pictures to the BB of his custom body tub - 40+" wheel tubs in the back for starters.
I still think the Scout II isn't back together.. but he had some neat ideas on how to do the body up.

I don't see much of him around the boards anymore.

umm..... beefy? yeah, I'd say it's beefy  considering stock was like 16 or 18 gauge sheet metal spot welded into a box.
Seems to be working out just fine..... in the garage. No dynamic testing yet.
Was very easy to fab, will take a long time to rot, was incredibly cheap ($36 for a 4x8 sheet of 16 gauge industrial galvanized, a piece of 14 guage galv. I snagged out of the scrap bin and under $10 for enough box tube to do both sides). Oh, and if I decide to run a body lift, I would think it would have to shove the entire mount up through the floor instead of just punching the lift blocks through..... but I guess I already covered that under BEEFY!!

Yeah, I've been working on it since last fall. I'm not going for a show or original restoration, but I does need to be structurally sound. Some day I'd like to take the top off without the Scout's tub turning into a taco....:smokin:
