hey guys im a chevy guy looking at buying a ford now and i got a question. im still learning alot in the auto world. i found a 95 f350 on 40's with a 5 spd tranny and 4:11 gears and a 460 in it. when i first saw the truck i wanted it but once i got closer and saw the big 460 in there it kinda steered me away. my question is , is ther anyway i can pull the 460 out and put a diesel in its place? what all has to b done? to make it work? and what year and size of diesel should i look at for it? what else will have to b changed? can i keep the tranny or will the diesel blow that up?what kind of gas milage would it get with the 40's 460 and 5 spd do u think. the guy cant tell me he says he never figured it out he used it to pull his bogging truck to bogs so just drove iton the weekends and filled it up. it has dual tanks to. any help would b great tho. oh and how much am i looking at paying for a diesel motor

You would much farther ahead to just find a diesel truck instead of trying to buy a truck and then do a swap.
The ratios of the five speed are different when put behind a diesel to match the diesel's torque curve and rpm range.
If you still want to do a swap, find a diesel truck with the drivetrain you want and a bad body and buy it for parts.

Put a 6BT in it from a dodge. www.fordcummins.com has the whole kit to adapt it to your tranny.

By the time you buy a diesel and all the parts to put it in it'll take you over a decade to make the money back up in fuel savings. The truck you listed will probably get about 10mpg around town, and maybe up to 12 on the highway if you keep it below 70.

With a Cummins 6BT in it and a properly functioning turbo and intercooler, you might get close to 20MPG or better. I don't see any reason to go with a powerstroke as it's more complicated and doesn't offer much additional benefit unless you're looking for an egregious amount of power and all the costs associated with building a high-zoot 7.3.
I commonly see used 6BT engines for sale for $3-4k from the people that sell used diesels as their primary business. You might be able to get a good deal locally on a salvaged dodge or something. It'd be quite a bit of work to do, but the end result would be a really cool truck that would easily last a decade or more.
