So I bought a new "old" tow rig couple of months ago... dude I bought it from is an engineer fella... so all his modifications obviously have to be kewl... one of which was the presence of these goofy nut insert doo-dads all over the truck. He used these things EVERYWHERE... they're in the headache rack for the 4" stack he ran on the truck, on the pillar for a snorkel tube attachement, he widened the tranny tunnel access and made a new cover, etc etc.

These little dudes are great for an alternative to self-tapping screws... especially for applications where removal is likely to occur frequently.

I bought the 360* rivet tool for tight space applications. It came with the fittings for several sizes including the 1/4"-20 that I was interested in. BTW, apparently, anything larger is quite difficult and probably requires a tool of more leverage to install. 1/4" is as big as I'll probably ever need... so this is fine.

Yer basic bag (25ct) of rivet nuts in the 1/4"-20 variety. Also, it is very important to use the appropriate size drill when making the hole for these inserts... McMaster provides this info... these nuts I bought, require a 25/64" bit... not your typical size found at HD, Lowes, autostore etc. These are knurled to help lock them in place... but using a 13/32" bit would probably still allow these to spin.

Do you have any pics illustrating their use on your trailer?

Some examples of these on the truck. I bought this to initially make a similar tranny cover in the jeep. Reason, I stuck a twin sticked D300 in the YJ which obviously required significant widening of the tunnel. I've been running around the last couple of years with a built in heater ... going to Moab in 3 weeks or so... need to cover that extra heat source up a bit... and wanted it to look nice and have better function than screws.

On top of that... nothing worse than stabbing your knuckles on pointed screws sticking through the floor pan while under your rig... say removing a drive shaft or something.

Here's the CTD's air box with several rivet nuts in use:

http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=256352&stc=1&d=1154106521

Here's a couple on the headache rack... a little thicker material. The nut rivets I bought handle material 0.027"-0.165" thick. However, they have some in 1/4"-20 that will handle 0.165"-0.260" thick as well.

And my favorite example... the tranny cover:

Also, this is just one type of rivet nuts... go to mcmaster-carr's website... around pg 3109 and knock yerself out perusing the different styles and uses as well as materials. These are zinc-coated steel... they also have the same size in aluminum.

Guess I should have worded it as "howabout a part number or page number to get us started".

Looks like pages 3109-3112

The HF unit sucks ass. However - our local tool store rents really nice guns for $5 a day. I did all my dash mounts and my rear flare mounts with rivnuts...

The best part is they can be installed in places you cant get behind.
Plus all you have to do to install them is drive a bolt into them, it sucks the rivet down untill it's clamped.

I hung a very sturdy grab bar/cb mount(not rollover cage!) with them. Very strong.

I got mine from a local rivet supplier.

I never knew rivet nuts had a lobby but now that I do I'll keep my sarcastic comments about them to myself. I'll also agree to take back everything bad I ever said about them like the time I said I thought dzus fasteners might actually be better under certain circumstances. No way! The rivet nut, along with the Salk vaccine, may be one of the most important inventions of our time.
Rivet nuts rule!

I got one of these a few years ago. Makes for cleaner installs for the right application. Careful with the threaded part of the tool though. You can tweak it if you gorilla the rivnut in place.

Dope. I'm gonna get one so my girlfriend can Be-Dazzle me a jean jacket with it.

The fact that you know what "Be-Dazzle" is means A) you have a daughter or B) you are :rainbow:

It's also obvious roverjohn ain't gettin' any. :flipoff2:

Im not going to get into the smart ass talk, but just wanted to let everyone know who may be interested in these to search for "pem nuts". A buddy of mine owns a huge sheetmetal business and uses them by the 1000's every day. I agree with all who say they are slick as shit. They can be used anywhere!

PEM nuts suck for this application. They only work in thin sheet metal, and you need an "anvil" and access to the back side to install according to their 12 page PDF. The beauty of the nutcert is you can install them in a blind hole. If you have access to the back side, use a nut and a lock washer

Those are perfect for installing accessories to the roof. I might be able to contribute a Sedona roof rack for you.
